New York Titles
I bought a car recently and got in the mail what looks like to be 2 registration documents - no title that I'm used to seeing.
Can anyone advise me if this is correct for NY titles...... |
Re: New York Titles
Last I knew, NY only has registration cards, no titles.

Eddie
Found this with a Google search, Wilma where are you ? Proof of ownership. For cars built from 1973 on, this means a title signed over to you and a bill of sale. For cars older than 1973, the transferable NY registration or the proof of ownership from another state will do. |
Re: New York Titles
Yup, what Mike said. Pre 73 the owner just signs the back of the registration to transfer ownership. That's why you can't trace owner history in New York!

Re: New York Titles
Eddie,
I'd check with Steve Shauger. He lives in NY, I'm sure he has a definitive current answer. When I bought my '59 Chevy in NY about 18 years ago, it hadn't been re-registered in 17 years. NY DMV deletes a car from the database after 5 years of registration inactivity. Not sure what you bought, but a registration and a notarized bill-of-sale worked for me titling a NY car here in OH. Re: New York Titles
Woj....thanks for the advise - - looks like last registration on the car was 4/30/75 and it is a registration looking card - no title doc as we are used to seeing today.
based on the info you all have provided - looks like the BOS and the registration info signed should do the transfer...... It is a 69Z - HO - RS - White Stripe car, black comfort weave interior, no cowl hood or spoiler car , tach and gauges - needing some TLC |
Re: New York Titles
Wow, sounds like a neat car. I'm sure after your TLC treatment, it will be spectacular. Can't wait to see it.
Phil Woj. PS. Ohio required a letter from NY DMV stating that the car was registered in NY. However, if it hasn't been registered for over 5 years, it will be gone from the database. I had to get an official letter from NY stating their policy for record keeping; and that my car had fallen out of the database. If that becomes a problem, let me know. At that point, OH DMV required a notarized bill-of-sale to complete the re-titling. |

Re: New York Titles
Eddie's plan (i'm on to you Eddie!) is to own one of each color!!!!!!! This car will be stunning when done!

Re: New York Titles
The reg is just a small card maybe two inches by two inches...says right on it 'transferrable'.................Just be sure your state will take it...most will but I'm not sure all will...It's like a letter of correction...Make a mistake in Mass, use the right form and notarize and you will be all set, take the same fron to New York and they will tell you to get a corrected Title and start all over again...

Re: New York Titles
I bought many a car at Englishtown swap meet back in the day with just a New York registration card. Most I just flipped, but I did register a few. Still I have no problem with old NY reg. with my tag guy here in Pa. as long as you have a bill of sale and a pencil tracing of the VIN.

Re: New York Titles
Eddie, send me a pic, I will let you know if it is correct.

Re: New York Titles
the guy I sold my 69 L78 Nova to would not believe me when I told him there was no NY title, only a transferable reg. Thought I was "duping him", I told him to go down to his local OH DMV office and ask them. they set him straight, unreal

Re: New York Titles
well I'm finding that some DMV's here in AZ are not sure either......interesting to say the least
hopeful next week ill have the title squared away |
Re: New York Titles
all done - used Desert Titles - 3rd party DMV in AZ......knowledgeable people....lady knew right away that old NY titles are like registration cards. She also let me keep the vintage title (for a fee) showing the car was last registered in 1975.
Appreciate all the input and advise on the matter.....thanks SYC guys for the help. |
Re: New York Titles
Good to hear Eddie. I have never registered my Chevelle because I did not want to forfeit the original title. Is this Randy's operation (also of Desert Auto Sport)?

Re: New York Titles
Well, I got all excited when I first saw the subject! My somewhat fuzzy eyes replaced the "L" in "titles" with another "T". Imagine my disappointment!!!
