So, who's the first to head to Cuba....
To see what 50's relics are worth saving?

Re: So, who's the first to head to Cuba....
They have been saving them and I thought they passed a law that they had to remain in Cuba

You guys are faster responding to this news than I thought! Don't get your hopes up too high as remember '59 was when US/Cuba relations went sour also any W-motored Chevys have been long replaced w/ Russian diesel engines etc. The best I ever saw there were a few 50's ragtops maybe worth considering, a '57 Starfire Olds ragtop TAXI tooled by me one day but again a diesel transplant. Could be a few treasures tucked away but probably best look for old Bugattis and Ferraris or other more exotic stuff? ~ Pete |

Re: So, who's the first to head to Cuba....
With the recent surge of interest in hot rod diesels (here in SWFL, hopped up diesel trucks are EVERYWHERE and what everyone seems to want - they even had the first diesel truck drags last week where one guy rolled the truck he borrowed), those might be hot items. Has to be some rich Cuban's 1920s-30s European car collection from the Bautista era stashed away somewhere on the island. You can bet there are people sniffing around to find just such a dream stash that's been in hiding since before 1959.

Is it just me, or does it look like a diorama?

Re: So, who's the first to head to Cuba....
We will not be able to get the REALLY GOOD cigars. I smoked one 20 years ago out of 2 boxes a friend smuggled back. They were rolled with a certain ingredient that makes most people giggle and usually hungry. It burned for an hour and had great taste. I have not had any one that good since.

Re: So, who's the first to head to Cuba....
I am able to get the visa and I go every other year. I am going again at the end of May for the Bienal for 10 days. My good friend Sony did tours at the Partagas factory behind the Capitol Building for years and is still good friends with Kiki who is second in comand there. He always gives me some special cigars. Sony's neoghbor has a Nomad and then I saw one at the airport on the way out. I know there are a few 1915-1925 Cadillac's as I have seen a few.
Charlie is right. There is a law that prevents the export of the cars, plus even the totally worn out POS 56 Chevy is worth 25K down there. I have been trying to figure out how to get a COCO Taxi back here. I want one to cruze around Galveston in. |
Re: So, who's the first to head to Cuba....
Hot VW's back in the early 90's went down there and were allowed to photo a mint black split window in a garage a old guy stashed it back when things went bad back in the day...the story alluded to many cars in pristine condition that are hidden and never driven and not many people know of outside of the family.
