67 SS RS camaro l78

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
The tag is a reproduction, too early for L78. Looks like current owner got stuck with a fake car.

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
----Engine stamp also in question. And,,,by that I mean bad!!!.....Bill S

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Being specific, what's not right with the Pad stampings.
as well, the Tag. Facts please. |
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Vin font I believe is smaller and because it's feb build on tag 4k was not available till April.
|
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
I noticed the build date too Jeff.

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Is this going to be the new trend... show pictures of a filthy dirty car to make it look like a preserved "garage find" so that no one questions the originality?

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Does the tag appear too sharp, fresh and crisp to you guys ?
the tag stamps appear all concise as if stamped at 1 time instead of a tag pulled pre stamped from Fisher , then code stamped ,,, ? If I'm not mistaken every real tag I've seen actually has 2 definite depths & thickness variations on the code digits.....true ? Looks like a completely different color and texture than the firewall too, with no tape or masking telltales.....are my eyes that good or that bad ? |
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Thanks Mark, that's what I love about this site.

What is the earliest build date for a 4K Camaro, a real one. Thanks |
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Grumpy Jenkins had the 1st l78 but it was a 4 p on the cowl tag. The 2nd was the pace car that paced the Indy race. I believe 4k came on the cowl tag 1st week of April. Grumpy's car was 2nd week of March?

Not quite the # 92 track pace car built 3C, was the first camaro built with an L78. Yes it was coded 4P and is documented with Protectoplate identifying the original production installed drivetrain. Chevy engineering later changed it from a L78 4spd to a L35/34 automatic. |
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Oh contrare, monfrare. Grumpy' car was built before the pacer. I believe charley, who owned the pacer, has agreed to this. I think this was a long winded conversation years ago. I think grumpy' was 3b.

Well the pace car is 2400 Vin before Grumps and thought the TT identified it as built a week before( this was debated 6 years ago). The only rub is that some believe it wasn't the first produced because the engine was switched by Chevrolet engineering to the L35/34 configuration. So some believe since it wasn't delivered/sold as an L78 it wasn't the first one. We can split hairs but to me it was the first L78 camaro off the assemblyline which in my opinion defines it as the first. The latest info may define the backup pace car as the first L78 so Grumps may in fact be the third. |
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Grumpys car was probably the third L78. The # 1 and 2 Pace cars were built before it. The # 2 car might be the first. As I recall CRG also agrees that the Pace Cars were built before Grumpys.

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
I stand corrected. Has grumps 67 l78 been found?
|
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
I personally looked at this car on the way home from Mcacn on Monday morning. Thanks to Steve for stopping me as I was going to buy it. A few things didn't add up but I thought the tag was real. After speaking with him I started to figure things out. It was a nice car with the work that was done so far.

Isn't that the Kimball Bros. car that Grump sold them right after the 67 season? That was totally restored by the Kimball's and was at Carlisle a few years ago. Car has been sold for big money I believe. I think one of the Bros. just passed away. Correct me if I am wrong on this. |
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Sam, you are correct about kimball. I looked it up and saw some great pics on Detroit horsepower forum. Car is beautiful!

I think the owner has been told it's not original, but no change to the ad. Yes, Grump's car was #3. Grumpy was told it was the first one. And it was the first one sold. The other two were for internal purposes so GM wasn't trying to deceive him. Anyone have a pic of its trim tag? |
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
He gave me the ole smokescreen. Told me he had it for 20 years and that it was definitely original. I told him I didn't like the stamp ad he told me heartbeat city assured him the tag was real as was the block. Only had a 331 rear in it which I thought was strange. Told me and showed me the title with 40,000 actual miles on it but the cluster said 21,000. I checked and told him the cluster was changed and he said it was original to the car. Too many flags...Had to walk
|
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
I talked to the seller weeks ago when the ad came out. He said Jim at Heartbeat said the tag was real and he could sell them all the parts they need. Of course the tag is real, just not from '67 and not original to the car. As far as L78 he said who knows unless you were there at the factory.

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
A VERY credible source Heartbeat City.

That car could be a very pretty driver.

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
For 50 grand?????
|
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
No, for 20,000.
|
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Don,
Do you feel the pad code and vin are questionable or OK ? The vitals that seperate it as a L78 such as the fuel lines, springs and such, are they original or suspect like many other items ? A very good friend has an interest , being you & Steve looked it over, I am trying to clear the air or the slate. Regards, Tom |
Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Everything now that I really thought about it is suspect. I personally believe the engine was restamped during the rebuilding. I think it's horrible that he has his friend selling it for him and did not tell him the truth about the car. It's not a console car so it couldn't have had the gauge option nor the tach which it has now. Explains why title says 40,000 and Speedo has 21,000 on it. Too many flags for me. He won't take a penny less either.

Re: 67 SS RS camaro l78
Then his friend is naive or a front for hand washing...
Doesn't seem like its going anywhere anytime soon for that $$$..... Thanks for your insight and response.... |
