I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Today I took my Nova down to a nice little cruise inn that is about 10 minutes from my house on a nice country road to get there. The weather was beautiful and the car was running great. Two of my buddies were coming to the cruise also.
The cruise officially starts at 5:00 PM. and has been getting bigger in it's second year. There are what we call prime parking spaces along the backside of the parking lot near shade trees. My buddy and I have noticed that over the summer other cruisers have been getting there rather early, parking and saving spots for friends. So I got there exactly at 3:25 PM today and when I pulled in I noticed that almost all of these spots were taken or saved. The owner of the restaurant where this cruise takes place had stated that he did not mind if people save spots but asked that people stop saving the spots at 5:00 PM when the cruise officially starts. This is ok and not unreasonable to ask. So I found three parking spots on the very end of this back row, parked my Nova and placed two small cones in the adjacent two parking spaces next to my car for my buddies. I grabbed my folding chair and sat down behind my car in the shade. My buddies were due to arrive no later than 4:00 PM and we were "playing by the rules" of not saving the spots past 5:00 PM. As I was sitting in my chair two guys pull up one in a Model A Ford and the other in a early 80s Corvette. They stop in front of my car and this guy who was seated about 7-8 cars down from me walks up, obviously knows these guys because of they they were talking, and this guy proceeds to tell the guys in their cars to park in the two spots I had saved. This guy starts to move my cones and both vehicles proceed to back into the spots. I then hear this guy tell his two buddies, "I don't know whose cones these are but just park here and I will move them". He then proceeds to say "whoever saved these spots will probably get mad but I don't give a $hit, who cares". I watch this go on and my blood pressure soared! I was so mad I picked up my cones from where this guy moved them to, put them back in my trunk along with my chair and started getting ready to leave. I called my buddies and told them I was leaving and what happened. BUT BEFORE I LEFT I HAD TO TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS!! I went over to where this guy sat back down and confronted him. I asked him if he had a car there. He said yes and pointed to this ugly Mustang in front of where he was seated. I noticed a cone in the parking spot adjacent to his car. I then asked this guy if he was saving that spot and he stated he was for a friend. I then asked him if he knew who owned the two cones he had just moved. He stated no and I told him that I did. He then lied and stated "oh the two guys in those cars wanted to park there and told me to move the cones, so I did and I don't know them". I told him this was all B.S. and heard what he actually said. I then went on a tirade. I basically asked him who the hell he thought he was to do what he did and move other peoples property when the owner of the restaurant clearly stated it was ok to save spots til 5. I then told him that maybe I should move his cone and let whoever park in his saved spot. He didn't have anything to say at this point. This guy eventually said "I'm sorry" after my tirade. I then got in my Nova and left. I didn't even want to stay there any longer because I was still so mad !! The nerve of some people!! So I think that's it with me this year. No more cruising... I am just fed up with idiots like this. I like to go and unwind after work, relax with my friends and our cars, we mind our own business and not bother anyone only to have to deal with this crap!! I am just sick of it. OK I am off my soap box now.... Rich |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
That is BS.
Rich, we have such a fun hobby/passion, and very rarely such dinks get in the mix. Chin up!! |

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
It does suck running into jerks like that. I think you needed to call the guy out - so good for you! Don't end on a low note though. Sometimes I head out to the Philly Street Races just to hang with a different type of guys after running into a guy like you did.

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
The only mistake you made was that you should have confronted him as soon as he touched your cones. Asked him if he wanted his hands broke. I feel you as people down here try that same shit untill your in their face. Shame you had to leave. People have no courtesy anymore.

Ditto! I totally agree. You are not alone. The idiots and wannabe's are everywhere. We have people show up to "classic" car shows with everything under the Sun. Including crap that looks like kids in their Moms car. The sadder part is some are controlled access events, and they let them in. It's not enough that we are always overloaded with the new Challengers, Camaros, and Mustangs... that are nothing more than new cars, maybe with some stupid LED lights. No mods. Just stock new cars, and they think they belong. We share your frustration. But i would have been all over their ass at the beginning and held those spots. It's a fine line between being nice and sociable with fellow car enthusiasts, and dealing with assholes. It's always a call you have to make. Don't let them get to you. Go back again, and stand around the front of your car bowed up, daring anyone to challenge your spots. |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Maybe I'm one of those "dinks" but, I get annoyed at people who save multiple spots for their friends. I brought my ratty old 1969 Corvette to a show one year and saw an open spot; started to back in when some guy tells me he's saving that spot for his buddy.
I was like WTF? So I moved to another spot. I am new to the whole cruise / car show scene but, in my opinion if your buddies want to park all together then arrive at the same friggin' time. I would not move anyone's stuff but, if a spot is open then it should be fair game. |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
What bothers me the most about cruise ins is Parents that do not teach there kids not to touch the cars.
How many times I have encountered this problem is unbelievable, one parent even told me if I don't like people touching my car why not leave the show? After that I got nasty and right in his face and I was going to lace him but I did not but I called him every name in the book, I let him have it real hard. He ended up walking out of the show and the other car guys were clapping. I went back for weeks to the same show as I am a regular there and never saw his family again. |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
The whole saving spots for people at car shows is wrong to begin with. If I'm in line for a roller coaster should my friends be allowed to bypass people who had been waiting in line behind me because I "saved them a spot"?
I get it, those are the "rules" put on by place hosting the event. But it pisses me off that I can't park where I want when I'm there before other people at car shows. This happens routinely at Car Craft and Back to the 50's at the Minnesota State Fair grounds. If the event is not important enough that you can't or won't take work off for it to get there early, than too bad. Sorry if I've insulted anyone but the saving spots thing is a detriment to the hobby IMO. |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
My biggest pet peeve are dinks that take 2 parking spots that think there car is so much better than the other cars, very disrespectful to the other cars IMO
|
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Another one Danny is when you're parked on the end of a row and someone parks on the other side of you extending the row because they think there car is better than yours.

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I have to agree with Wes. I like the good ol' days at the Sun Drive-In and Porkys when you and your friends all arrived at the same time and took whatever spots were available. There were times that I got there late and there were no available spots. Oh well, my loss. I could not agree more with the Car Craft Nationals in St. Paul and one of the reasons I quit bringing a car. Being from out of state now it makes it harder for me to get there and 'save a spot' and even if you arrive on time it is nearly impossible to get a spot as many of these people start putting up cones and barriers Thursday afternoon.
Hey Wes, didn't your dad put up a bunch of cones next to his SS427 Impala? When I stopped and talked to him he said you were due to arrive any minute........ Just giving you crap. |

Hiding my head in shame
Yes, we arrived together and I had to unload my Coronet off the trailer and he zipped in ahead of me. Yeah, it was a good 10-20 before I got in. Unfortunately we all have to play the "game" of saving spots even if we hate the idea of doing it. GUILTY!!! <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: SS427</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> Hey Wes, didn't your dad put up a bunch of cones next to his SS427 Impala? Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Like Rich...If all the players know the rules beforehand (like at Pavillions...you can save spots until 4pm)...then there shouldn't be an issue. There is one guy that goes to Pavillions that pulled the stunt of moving someone elses chair out, so his "friend" could park there.
The cool thing is that the guy who was saving the spot came back and confronted him....in front of everyone, then proceeded to park his car directly in front of the spot he was trying to save. Then he left...and stayed within viewing distance of his car. He didn't move the car until well after 9pm...and visited with friends the whole time |

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I agree with old5.0
Like it or not many of us old schoolers also have a newer Muscle car in the garage so when I bring my 2007 GT 500 Shelby instead of my 1970 Chevelle or Challenger I should not be able to park with the other cars? Honestly it is not a nice thing to say to not bring modern muscle cars to these shows as the new era has some pretty kick ass horse power under those hoods |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
It all boils down to common courtesy!! There are some shows and cruises that do not want people saving spots. I respect that and do not do it or we all arrive together and park together. In my opinion when a chair, cone, cooler or whatever is placed in the parking spot it is personal property and should be left alone, hands off!! Unless the owner of the business or parking lot moves it or tells you to what authority does some jack a$$ have just because "he doesn't like it". Guess what TOO BAD!!!!
Is it getting to the point where someone wants the spot my car is in, Oh now I should just move to another spot because they want my spot?? "Oh, I'm sorry sir you arrived an hour after I did and you like my spot, I'll just move my car for you"... I know I should have jumped up and said something right of way but it might have gotten physical at that point and I was trying to cool myself down. To me that is not worth it. I have seen this crap happen way too often in the past couple years not only to me but others and just blew a gasket!! I have been going to cruises and shows for a long time and can't remember people being so bold and rude as they are now. I did give this jerk a good tongue lashing!! I doubt he will pull a stunt like that again. As to the guys who don't like the spots being saved, what is the big deal? The only trouble I see with it is if the parking lot is getting very crowded and the spots are still saved that is rude and common sense should prevail and the spots should be let go. That pisses me off when people do that. To me that is NOT common courtesy. The people who the spots are being saved for should get themselves at the function at a reasonable time, don't come or find another parking space. I do feel strongly about that. Yesterday when I arrived at the cruise at 3:25 PM there were a ton of parking spots to park in other than the back row by the shade. These guys could have parked in other spots and brought their chairs over to the shade. I have seen people do that and their car is still within eye sight if you are watching it for "touchy feely" people which brings up another whole topic that pisses me off!! If the parking spots in the back row had been all taken that is what I would have done, not just take it upon myself to move someone's property because "I" want to park there. There were many spots in this back row already being saved by other guys when I arrived. The other thing is , if you don't like it get there early and park where you want!! Nobody says you can't do that... Just my .02 for what it's worth.... I'm not trying to piss anyone off here on the site, I just feel pretty strongly about these issues and I know in the grand scheme of things it is "small potatoes" and there are bigger and worse problems out there to worry about.. Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Personally, saving a spot or multiple spots for your friends who will be there later on gets on my nerves and is just plain not fair to anyone who gets to a show early. Especially when the show is small and there is a limited amount of decent parking spaces. I'm the guy who will move your stuff out of the way and park there. Just like it was stated earlier, you don't let all of your friends jump in front of you since you're first in line at the roller coaster.

Again, what gives you the authority to just move someones personal property and park where you want?? Like I said if you don't like it get there early and park where you want. First come first serve, right? If I get there before someone else why can't I save the spot especially if it is allowed? I was there first, you should respect that. If the cruise is small and filling up, then yes then I see no problem with releasing the spots as a common courtesy. I have also got to a cruise or show and paid for my friends if there is an entrance fee and told people that the spots are paid for. But I have friends that don't take their time and will get there promptly so overcrowding does not become an issue. Never is the spot tied up for that long. Usually well under a half an hour if that.. Rich |

Personally,I am from the camp that if you are not there in person, you don't get an advantage over those that are.
Like when you enter a raffle drawing, and they call your name and you are not there, they pick another name, and rightly so. I understand your frustration, but you got to know when to walk away, and realize how trivial this all is. Recently a musclecar owner who is also an off duty cop, confronted a person who claimed a spot here at a local cruise. He ignored his chair and drove right in.The two went chest to chest, and got in each others faces. The off duty cop gently pushed the other guy to get out of his face, the guy fell down on the street and claimed he was hurt and called police. The cop went to court for assault, was found guilty, fined and was put on unpaid leave. ..plus we are not new to this. |

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
We have two separate issues at hand. First is moving cones and taking a spot that the owner of the location has deemed reasonable. Second is the actual premise of saving spots at shows.
I have no qualms with the way you handled things Rich. When pressed in that situation we'd all benefit from taking advice on how you handled the situation. My problem is with reserving spots in general. The general rule is that if you weren't there first you have no real claim to anything. The first thing that comes to mind is waiting in lines. We'd all love to skip to the front of the register check out, ticket line or the bathroom. I don't understand why we as a society know that somehow skipping to the front of a line is wrong, but reserving spaces for someone who is tardy is right? These car show have created this atmosphere. It also happens at camp grounds where people "save" a prime piece of real estate even though they've got no real claim to the property. We all pay the same amount to camp or show our cars at the same show. It's like general admission at a concert. If you get there early, you get to lean against the rail and be closest to the band. I guess it's the same old problem that's been going on forever. |

It's disrespectful to anyone who gets up early and tries to get a good parking spot at any show. If I want to park with my friends, I will wait, meet up with them, and then drive in together and try and find spaces where we can be close. That's showing common courtesy to your fellow car enthusiasts. Your personal property doesn't need to be spread across multiple desirable (shaded) parking spaces if you have only one vehicle there, even if it's allowed by the event organizer. First come first served is correct, but it should only be your immediate vehicle. The next vehicle pulling in behind you is the next first come, first served, and so on. |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
This is an interesting conversation. I agree with Matt on principle but also can understand the other side if saving spots is allowed by the show. I personally think saving spots should not be allowed. After all, if your friends show up late they can always park within viewing distance of their cars and always sit with you in the shade.

Put yourself in the position of driving into a car cruise and then having to park outside the show because several available parking spaces have little orange Harbor Freight construction cones for people's buddies that just "might" show up.

I don't even bother anymore for the most part. I got sick of hearing people trash someone else's car because it wasn't the right year or make or some other, similar childish b.s. Took all the fun out for me. |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Parking at shows should be handled similarly to how large parties are handled at restuarants; you'll be seated when your entire party arrives. If you want to park with your friends we will allow you to find a spot when they're all here.

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I try to bring my daughter when I can so I am usually late to meet friends at a car show. Nobody has ever saved a spot for me so I just park where I can. Part of the fun is seeing other cars along the way to each other's cars.

Kinda makes me glad I will never get a car together to take to a show . Maybe someday? I have an old jalopy Model A I took to our town's antique tractor/machinery show. You would not believe how many people let their kids jump on the running boards and others just helped themselves to opening the doors. One guy even took it out of gear (it was on a hill mind you). Next time, if there is a next time, I am sitting with a baseball bat and a gun on my lap. Treating others goes both ways, and that means not touching what is not yours and asking first before you do (that goes for cones too). I can understand wanting to sit with buddies and they want to be close to their car, I can also understand if saving spots is an agreed known activity. It seemed 'that guy' Rich confronted had two sets of standards by not offering up his own saved spot. I would also meet up at another location with friends and arrive together (of course, someone always has to work late or lives far and this can cause an exception where I would appreciate a saved spot, if this were the case).

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I have pretty much given up on the car show scene...especially if it involves a long travel time to get there. We have one local ice cream/snack shop [O'Kennys] that probably does the best job of all of them. The people are friendly and fun to be around. The parking is first come first serve...they do a wagon ride for the kids...the guy has a mini car museum and the food is fast and good.
My only real complaint about car shows is the endless stream of show flyers that folks try to put on or in your ride. These should be handed out collectively to each entrant as they arrive...this is the professional and considerate way to spread the word. Having your 9 year old run from car to car with a handful of photo copy flyers is just not acceptable. Wilma https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_4817.jpg |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I agree with Wilma, don't have the patience to deal with car show jail these days. I guess some people see it as a major necessity but it is just not that important to me anymore, driving the cars and talking to the people is the thrill for me. How many people have had this lovely experience of "saving spots" on Southwest Airlines.? Same reason I will never fly SW again

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I have been going to car cruises for a long time myself and seen a lot of close calls with my cars.I seat in my chair and wonder why i even bring my cars.Sometimes i just go without one of my cars and walk around, which i enjoy more,no seating by the car watching it like a hawk.If i want to go for a drive,i just hop in and go,and then back home in the garage. It's a shame it has come down to this for some of us,but a lot of the stuff i have seen are mostly from non car people who don't know how to act towards cruisers cars, who have nothing better to do,but walk around.

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Then there's the jealousy and envy factor that some of these guys carry around with them, it is at an all time high in this society.
For the first time ever this year I also went to a car show without one of my cars and I found it was more fun that way but then I miss driving my car and bring it the next week to run into more dinks. The abuse continues. |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
While at a cruise being held here @ a train station parking lot,a guy with a newer model pick up truck backed it up in the row up against the R/R trax & displayed about a dozen of his signature plexi 3' sign boards in the bed for car owners to possibly buy.
Hand painted & homemade and really nice. A non stop commuter blew through and brought a hell of a wind as the signs became sails in the wind. All his signs went airborne and landed on the pavement and cars around him. 4 owners were directly affected by his boards hitting their muscle cars.I didn't see any damage, but they sure acted like there was. He gathered up his signs and left and hasn't been back since. |

Always interesting. I had my 69 z at a show where I was informed it wasn't real because it had power steering. The 69 z next to me had ac and an auto transmission yet warranted no comments. My son had the 69 Bee survivor. The survivor class winner was a 68 camaro with edelbrock fuel injection.
