66 442 Drag Pack
I saw this 442 at Mecum Indy this year. It is also going to be at Mecum Dallas. What exactly makes this a Drag Pack car. I am not an Olds expert by any means. I know there were 54 W-30's built in June of 1966 and that the Track Pack or Drag Pack was basically a dealer installed W-30 package. This car just looks like a regular tri-carb 442. Does anyone know anything about this car?

The original 54 66 w 30.cars were factory built with specific rear axle assembly's cams, valve springs,
Three carb manifold .directionals were moved to different locations in front bumper to fit air scoops Also core support and inner fender wells were cut out for hose routing and scoop placement. To feed air to the special chrome air cleaner that went on to the three carbs. Battery was placed in trunk ... Their is probibly other changes as well. Their were other cars converted with over the counter parts as well ( a friend owned one) I hope this helps answer your question. |

Shouldn't that car have the big chrome air cleaner with the air ducts going between the headlamps.

I believe the fifty-four W-30's were essentially hand built balanced and blueprinted racing engines from the factory. While the “Track-Pack” cars were converted at the dealerships with most of the W-30 components. However they did not receive the same individualized attention of the fifty-four race cars. The car in the auction appears to be just a standard tri-power 1966 442 and not one of the “Track-Pack” cars. It is missing the ram-air set up and the chrome air cleaner mentioned above. There's a 66 post sitting in a field close to my house been there for years. Steel wheels and the poverty caps I'm gonna have to go browse just to see if it's a v8 car.

I think the seller is taking liberties with his description - looks like a bare-bones L69 4-4-2. There's nothing "drag" about it other than perhaps the intention of the original buyer. So, yes, "This car just looks like a regular tri-carb 442" is correct. |

The # stamped on the shroud has no correlation to the car build sequence. The shrouds was hand drilled for the screws holding the 2 halves together. Since the top part was to be chromed both parts were number stamped so they would fit together correctly after chroming.
In reality the first car could have #23 shroud. And the code was L69 for the tri carbed cars with the small air cleaners.[img]https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics..._2_sport_coupe[/img] |

That this Mecum Auction featured 1966 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 is just a standard L-69 Tri-power car and not a "Track Pack" car. However, it appears to be a beautiful car regardless. |

They are not implying "Track Pack." What they are implying is "this is a special car set up for drag racing" with a heavy dose of hyperbole.
That's what I infer. |

Cool info and thanks for the clarification on the stamped shroud #'s. When owners of the 54 built refer to car #23 etc, if they're referring to build sequence and not shroud #, how are these #'s known? Also, if the shroud #'s were just to keep track of matching halfs, do #'s beyond 54 exist and how high a # has surfaced? [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif[/img] ~ Pete |

I'm not aware of records kept on the sequence of the cars. Most people are referring to the shroud # thinking that is the build sequence of the car.
I'm sure Mr Martin has more info than I have on the subject. Yes shroud #s do go past 54 I think it's up in the 90s. |

Thanks for your replies. According to 442.com there were 93 Track-Pack packages installed in 66 and those air cleaner assembly's weren't numbered like the W-30's were. So how do you document that a 66 or 67 442 is actually a Track-Pack or Drag-Pack car? I assume both terms infer the same thing. Since this is a dealer installed package you would need dealer invoices to prove the upgrade was done back in 66 or 67 and not years later when the car was restored. Is there a registry for 66 W-30's or Track-Pack cars? Here are two other 66 442's I've seen that were supposedly Track-Pack cars.

This cool post clearly states what an L69 Track Pack car is, and Track Pack is what the Olds community calls the dealer installed ram air package. "Drag Pack" is not normally used to describe it and sounds like just a name someone stuck on; it could mean anything. |

I have seen pictures of that car before it was restored and it was VERY ROUGH! I will try and find the website for the restoration place. I think they speacialized in Olds.

The 66 with the Hurst wheels is not a W-30. This is a L-69 car with a NOS track pack package added.

There was a dark turquoise 66 W30 sedan in High Ridge Missouri back in the late 80s...i kept track of it for a while and then it disappeared...documented and pretty nice, it was at a tiny body shop slated to get a full blown resto...never saw it again..last time i saw it was 1988...
