COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Did any of the original 69 COPO ZL1 camaros get a yenko performance upgrade. I know the traditional yenko cars were cast iron block with 201 or 198 of them produced. I can find all about this on the internet. But wasn't there five yenko versions of the COPO ZL1 camaros made? I hear of five ultra rare COPO Yenko ZL1'S. pardon my ignorance if I don't see this correctly but this is an unanswered question that I cannot find the answer to. I want my information straight if I happen to find a miracle barn find.

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
There is no reason to believe Yenko Chevrolet or Yenko Sportscars Inc was involved with any of the 69 factory-built ZL1 Camaros. When Chevrolet took back many of the cars from Fred Gibb Chevrolet [June '69] they were shopped around to dealers specializing in high-performance cars. Yenko certainly could have acquired some but by that time had many unsold COPO cars of his own.
Yenko did take over production of the ZL1 block casting after the 1969 model year. |

I'm thinking that if one of them did exist today the motor compartments wouldn't look like what I've seen on the Internet. The real carwould have to piece headers. Like this...

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Thank You William in my search of knowledge you have helped
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
I meant two piece headers not to... Stupid spellckeck...
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
I don't think yenko would have to do anything with the aluminum motor, just some graphics and other day 2 stuff. I think the zl1 outran the iron 427 by a little bit
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Fred had the first 50 of 69.Again excuse my ignorance I'm trying to learn here. Did the later 19 cars get ordered with different styles. Like maybe a Zl1 Z28 or rs?
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
A couple of ZL1's got the 9737 Yenko Sportscar conversion COPO option, bigger swaybar, 140 speedo, 15" rims. Is that what you were thinking of ?
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
I was under the impression that headers, high rise, carb and other high performance upgrades were involved in the YENKO performance upgrade for a zl1. maybe I'm chasing ghosts here but I really think this car exist.

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
let me research and get more information I'm not sure at this point.Thank You so far for the information.how did you like the motor pic? You will not find it on the internet it come from an owner/friend. he has something special I'm trying to figure out just exactly what it is...
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Start here with William's article: http://www.camaros.org/copo.shtml
And, Yenko never had any of the original 69 ZL1's. |
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
the reason I'm asking about cars beyond number 50 is because Fred sent back all but 13. The other cars... who knows... My owner/friend has the Vin match for copo # 67. Why does it have this motor? The original invoice (he has) says yenko performance upgrade... how do you connect #67 with yenko? If I am right about my friends car I think he has the holey grail of camaros....

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Thank you... kurt... I will lookbut maybe tomorrow it's my bedtime I have to work Tomorrow
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
He has ZL1 # 67 ? How long has he had it ?
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Since 1969... its really not my story to tell but it was in heritance from his grandfather.I discovered what it was last week and explained it to him.he already knew it was rare and valuable but I don't think he knew how rare.

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Is there a VIN on the block? Match the car VIN? Car VIN on the list?

2 of the ZL1 Camaros got the RS package, yes. No Z28 ever had a factory-installed big-block Mark IV engine. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...amaro_zl_1.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...187-nvqhc3.jpg |
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
The owner got with the dealer that sold it and found the missing information. Now he has to decide how to proceed. He is truly blessed and I am very happy for him and to have been part of the discovery.
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
You said they have had the car since 1969? How did the dealer get him the missing info?
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Tracy...We need pics, something more than the story. Every once in awhile we seem to get a new person on the site with some kind of similar tale but 99% of the time it turns out to be just a tale. I want to thank everyone that has refrained from making accusations and is letting this play out. If this is real it is a great event and we are lucky to be able to share in it. Hurry Tracy hurry.....

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
I believe this guy advertised on Craigslist in Seattle a few months ago, inherited ZL1 Copo, sitting since '74, all original, paperwork, etc.... for $ 75k with a phone number. Ok, I called and he said it was a blue RS Copo ZL1, deluxe interior, white vinyl top (sounds like a ZL1 we know), didn't really care about the car because he had 30 cars and would send pics of the paperwork. I explained that the RS ZL1 Camaros are already known and he thought maybe the dealer installed the ZL1. He never sent pics of the paperwork, he was too busy. A nice story, who knows what he may or may not have, certainly not an original RS ZL1 Camaro.

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Hello. Tracy has allowed me to use his login. I'm the owner of this car and Tracy is a friend/co worker. He took an interest in the car and took the time to help me research it. My grandpa was friends with the dealer and he made this car a reality back in 69. Ive spoken with the son and grandson of the original dealer. The son has known about this car since he was a teenager. He detailed it before it was given to my grandpa and has always been curious about what happen to it. Its a shame that i didnt do my part years ago to find out how truly rare this car is. I now have a decision to make. Ive never lived in Seattle. I live in the south. The cars color is hugger orange and it has 5977 original miles. I still have the original tires vacuum sealed and the original battry. I have had to replace the belts and fuel pump. I still have the original fuel pump. The weatherstripping has deteriorated over the years. I appreciate the info you have given us and again i have a big decision to make. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to post. Any more info that could be beneficial please let us know.

Tracy, that engine picture came from a Yenko clone with an all aluminum Yenko engine that I had a couple of years ago.

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
The owner of the selling dealership for ZL1 # 67 is still around, I talked to him at the last MCACN show. I'm surprised the son and grandson didn't let you know he's still alive and kicking? He might be able to help you out with original paperwork on the car?
I did talk to someone in area code 509 regarding grandpa's old ZL1 copo, blue rs, etc.... It must have been another grandpa's original ZL1, they keep turning up lately, especially on Craigslist. |
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Some sources indicate ZL1 #67 as known scrapped/destroyed? Also, Charley's commented before that ZL1 #67 was traded back in on #66? Hope things turn out that the genuine car is alive & well! This is so exciting........... please show us what grandpaw's got : )

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Maybe Grandpa moth balled it.

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
So, google Tracy's email and you come up with a name (which matches exactly) and a link to all posted you-tube videos. Quite certain the location is Tennessee based on metadata.

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Twertsy? I'm not sure why any of that matters. Your posting links to the owners friends children?
|
Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Plunaway, I agree. Also 92646, almost exactly the same. His is a rally sport though.

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
Any pictures to share Tracy? That goes a long way in gaining the confidence of board members and their willingness to help out.

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
I really cant. The owner asked that I didn't for now until he knows more about how to proceed with findings. I don't think he was too happy that I put the engine pic and told what it was. I joined the seek knowledge not necessarily to gain confidence. If I get the OK I will post more.

This thread reminds me of this other recent thread....

Re: COPO ZL1 with the yenko performance pakage.
In this day and age some people out there still don't realize that any photo posted can be checked against archived photographic material on the internet. So when someone posts a picture and says that it is "their" car, or their "friend's" car...and it turns out they posted it on a site where, coincidentally, the actual owner is a member, then it makes you giggle just a little bit.

Tracy you have not answered my pm. How do you explain the fact that the engine pic you posted claiming we will not find that pic on the internet of it is actually a pic of a Yenko clone engine that belonged to a current member of this site ? |

Could it be Mark's sold clone car w/ a new 'old' identity? ~ Pete |
