Now this is how gas stations used to look...
My friend's repair shop in Flemington, New Jersey on a Saturday afternoon. I was there to top off the freon in the A/C system of the SD455. All sorts of neat stuff in the bays and in the lot.

Old service stations are cool. Even better filled with old muscle! Old Sohio Pump Jockey |
Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
Wow... that could have been a real throw back if the gas price was 28.9 instead.

Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
Very cool!! Sure don't see too many shops like that these days.

Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
Awesome pics, and some great stuff that reminds me of when I was a kid.
And that gas price is about cents cheaper than here. Sux. |
Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
This is a timely thread. I am visiting family in Maryland this week and this old Texaco station is across the street from the hotel I am staying in. Some of the original details are missing, but it's a neat looking building. This style Texaco was all over Baltimore.
I also posted this photo on Facebook and some local car guys are posting some cool car memories of this place. http://onewaystreet.smugmug.com/Trav...SC01156-X2.jpg Sorry there are no cool cars on the lot. |

Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
I had a time warp day today... cruised past the local dealer and it was 1979 all over again. They had 2 Z/28's , one auto with T tops and tilt and power windows. The other was a hand shaker and crank windows. Nice to go back in time and shop every now and then. Wish I could get the time machine back another 10 years to 69!

Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
Took another drive today and shot a couple of other old gas stations.
http://onewaystreet.smugmug.com/Trav...SC01157-X2.jpg This was my dad's favorite gas station and regularly fueled there. It was originally Butt's Sinclair, then became Butt's BP. It was remodeled in the BP brown decor of the day. The service bays are out back, but I never saw vehicles being worked on. Behind the car trailer is a big pit that used to be full of hub caps. I remember digging in their for some Vega trim rings, and he had them! He was not a warm and fuzzy man and did not allow anyone inside. All of his merchandise was outside. For some reason, BP stopped selling fuel to him, so he stopped fuel sales and the place became Butt's Hardware. It now appears someone may be clearing it out. I'm sure there is LOTS of cool stuff inside that building! This area of Bel Air Road is pretty busy, so I had to find a safe place to shoot this. http://onewaystreet.smugmug.com/Trav...SC01159-X2.jpg http://onewaystreet.smugmug.com/Trav...SC01158-X2.jpg I believe this used to be a Phillip's 66 back in the day. It still stands along Rt 40 in Havre de Grace. It's now a suspension alignment shop. I believe the statue used to be mounted on the roof. Many old gas stations in the area are now either demolished or remodeled and no longer resemble a gas station. I'll see what I can find tomorrow on our road trip. |
Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
Cool pics also lots of us old gas fans here! Looks like we've got a new thread to add old pics to, where's Dog lately anyway? ~ Pete |
Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
The office for my shop was originally built as a gas station back in the 40s. Next to our sigh, you will see the old island light. You can still see the footprint of the island in the parking lot. Next to the office you is the footprint of the old drive over grease pit. On the side of the office in the bricks you can see where the restroom doors were on the outside.

Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
Not a gas station, but an old Dodge dealership. This used to be Smith Motor Company in White Marsh, MD. It is the original building. The service bays are located behind that bucket truck. Years later, they built the service department and another showroom across the street which now sits empty.
http://onewaystreet.smugmug.com/Trav...SC01163-X2.jpg At one time, it seemed Smith Motor Co sold every Dodge in Baltimore County. |

I love my local "OLD" station, no clue what branding was but a local wrench uses it to repair Volvo's

Re: Now this is how gas stations used to look...
Oh man, you opened up another can of worms here.
Most of these are Route 66 stations I found on a couple of different vacations. Others are around Texas. There are 2 or 3 other little known old highways like 66. One is called the Bankhead Highway and runs across Texas, parallel but South of 66, and another is of course the Lincoln Highway. And yes, I took ALL of the following pics. Enjoy. http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation2.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation3.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation4.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation5.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation6.JPG Doesn't look that old, but Stuckeys went away in the 80's I believe. They were a ritual sight as childhood vacation stops. http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation7Stuckeys.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation8old.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation9.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation10old.JPG |

http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation12old.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation13wayold.JPG As you may notice with this one, many of the true 40's-50's era places were a combined gas station and hotel/car park set up. These are hard to find any more. http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation14old.JPG Many of these are the center piece surrounded by car park rooms or RV parking spots. http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation15old.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation16old.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation17.JPG Then, some are just out there all by their lonesome- http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation18.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation19.JPG http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/CoolStation20.JPG |

Sorry, I guess those were more of "How those cool old stations look now"
instead of "how they used to look". This is along Rt 40 in Cecil County, MD. I never remember them selling gasoline, but there has always been cars on the lot for sale. There is a note on the front door to call a number if you are interested in one of the cars. http://onewaystreet.smugmug.com/Trav...DSC01166-L.jpg Kinda sad to see this. It is the former Luby Chevrolet on Monument Street in Baltimore City. The showroom was where the mattress store is now. Before Luby closed, they remodeled the showroom exterior in an art deco theme. Since the intersection was triangular shaped, the showroom was triangular shaped too. The service bays were behind the showroom. This is not the best of areas in Baltimore City, so I did not hang around too long. A VERY busy Monument Street is on the other side of the building. This will be all I have to add from Baltimore Maryland, as I return home tomorrow. |
