LS6 Low Rise Intake
I have an LS6 569 intake and can't find a casting date on it. It may have come from a 1973 marine engine. Any enlightenment?

Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
Does it have a riveted on oil splash guard underneath?
|
Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
Yes,it has the riveted on steel shield.

Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
Drill it out, there should be a date under there.

The Date code is under the shield. Here is a photo of mine before I put it on the engine.
I decided not to take the shield off mine to just check the date as I was confident it was original to my car anyways and did not want to re-rivet the shield back on. Once it's on the motor who will see the date anyways |
Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
The only issue with cleaning them is if you were to glass bead the intake -- trash may remain under the heat shield ... I have always (and very carefully) removed the rivets and and cleaned under the shield, then reassembled.
But there are other methods to clean ... The TAZ |
Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
Sand blasting or glass beading without removing the shield is just inviting disaster. Sand is deadly to the whole engine.

Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
Are the runners numbered on your manifold? If they are its 1971 and later.

Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
No runner numbers and thanks for the help guys. It is appreciated.

Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
If you do take the shield off and need new rivets, I have some that I will send you. They came straight from Chevrolet Engine Plant in Flint years ago.

Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
Thanks Tony, I'll keep that in mind.

Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
There is no need to drill out the rivets(sp?). A thin flat head or putty knife and a small hammer will do the job. Work the blade under the rivet and twist the handle. They will back right out. You can rotate them and reinstall with locktite or JB Weld if you are anal retentive. New rivits may not be a bad idea but I'm not sure it is makes a difference.

Re: LS6 Low Rise Intake
I was thinking that intake was also used for 70 L78 applications.

Correct Ken, that intake was used for both L78 and LS6. Kurt |
