Re: Al Maynard Auctions
I was in his basement/house once. Lots of stuff, including the 68 Z convertible.
His garage has appeared in several magazine articles over the years... |
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
Sometimes I would go to Carlisle just for the entertainment in his spaces. PRICELESS to say the least!!!
|
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
This is such a shame, but, it's one of those things that was bound to happen.
Al was a great friend and is truly missed. If any of you remember the Green Bay collection, this will dwarf that 10 fold. As I and a lot of you guys remember, he would go to Carlisle with the 40 ft. trailer and was allways a riot to be around.(if he knew you) Last I knew, the trailer was still parked out back ,still packed full. This collection would be better served as a Museum than an auction . One can only guess what is all there. This is one of those auction's you won't want to miss. To bad they have this spread out over 3 "Frecken" weeks. That is very poor management to me on the part of auction house. Just my two cents, Joe |
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
Something to think about.... Al had a great time playing with all this stuff but now his Widow has to deal with getting rid of all of it. How many of us have treasures piling up that we will never use ? Maybe think about dealing with it sooner than later.
|
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
Charley, you're right. We helped the widow of Paul D get rid of all of Paul's stuff. Most of the cars and bikes were the easiest, but he had gobs of parts, also. Some of his cars were not running and those were a pain.

Five years ago when I had my first heart attack, as I laid in the hospital bed, I had the same thoughts. When I came home, I sold 22 Harley Davidsons that I had collected, most of 4 garages full of Harley parts, four cars, and some of my gun collection. I'm using the cash to build my retirement place in Florida right now. I figure that will be a lot easier for my wife to sell than all the "stuff" that I had accumulated through the years. I was at Al's place a few times. The stuff he had amassed is nothing short of amazing. I met him 40 years ago, at a small shop here in Flint, Kustom Headers. |
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
I first met Al when I paid what I thought was wayyy too much for a Yenko ZL-1 block for 3400 bucks. After a few years I realized he was in icon at Carlsile. A real character and carguy !! He had a few parts that I tried to buy for many years and he would not sell me..bummer to see them auctioned off now. God bless.
..does anyone have any specifics on the individual parts, etc.? how they plan on auctioning the stuff? |

Re: Al Maynard Auctions
This is indeed a rather sad and unusual way to sell a collection of this size and magnitude.
I knew Al for nearly 30 years. We judged at Detroit Autorama every year and shared the passion for all things with wheels. I was also called in to oversee the Muscle Car group at the Concours d'Elegance of America, formerly known as the Meadowbrook Concours, when Al passed, which I am truly honored to do to this day. I live about 15 minutes from Al's place and as Stefano mentioned in an earlier post, the very weak auction description doesn't even scratch the surface of what is in this collection, whether talking quality, rarity or sheer quantity. I plan on being at the auctions and if I can be of assistance to anyone, let me know. Bashton MCACN Managing Member |
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
I also live very close to this auction. Should be some very interesting auctions.

Re: Al Maynard Auctions
I had the pleasure to meet Al at the 1985 Super Chevy @ Martin, MI. We were both looking at used intake manifolds from a swapper and it started to rain. Al asked if I wanted to sit in his suburban with him until the rain stopped. We talked about his drag racing years and the car and part collection that he had put together. I am glad that I had the opportunity to meet and spend time with him. A lot of knowledge of the car hobby went with him.

Re: Al Maynard Auctions
These guys have 5-10 online auctions a week going on in a Michigan under a few different business names. They sell everything from junk, to construction equipment, to real estate.
I've bought stuff off their auctions and they are pretty well run. Will be an interesting way of auctioning a collection like this, but if he has a lot of one particular item, which it looks like he does, it will be pretty difficult to remember what you looked at earlier when you're in front of your computer placing bids a week, or two later. Does anyone know if they have moved all this stuff across the state to Wayland, near Grand Rapids, or is the viewing at his shop/house? |
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
There were trucks and trailers at Al's house loading the stuff about a week or two ago. I don't know if it's all been moved.
|
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
Does anyone know how they plan on running the auction?? Is there a list?? Do they randomly walk around and auction stuff in any old order??? Three separate weeks makes it undoable for me. I would be interested in a few rare parts, but impractical.
Is anyone going to preview the stuff that could take a look at a few parts and answer a few questions? Thanks, Max |
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
Would be nice if someone could jot down the pad numbers on any big blocks and date/partial vin on any muncie transimissions/cases.
|
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
That first week is also the same week as MECUM Indy.

Re: Al Maynard Auctions
A few photos of what they're auctioning off.

Re: Al Maynard Auctions
Ok I see the listings for the second auction and is it just me but I'm guessing most of the good stuff has been picked through unless its being saved for the last auction?? Yes there were a few good pieces but not what I heard.

The last time that I was at Al's place, I took a bunch of pictures of his cars and quite a few of his parts and guns. I don't see a lot of the stuff that was there in the auction, so I would guess that someone has been through the parts. |
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
I went thru 30 pages of auction listings and there wasnt one part I would bid on. Usually the way to sell large lots is to put a bunch of filler stuff in with some good stuff.

Same deal with a few auctions I've been to over the years. All, or much of the "good stuff" was cherry picked or was being held for a different sale at a later date. I'm hoping that some of the stuff Al had that he wouldn't sell me when he was alive still comes up in the final auction. He really did have it all. |

Re: Al Maynard Auctions
So they are also reserve auctions?
"**Note- Sells subject to consignor approval of high bid" Sounds like a huge dog and pony show. Jason |
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
Not really a dog and pony show for the most part. In the first auction there were only three items out of 877 that had a reserve, an 0- complete small block, an 0- pair of porcupine heads, with two pair of valve covers and injection manifold on a complete 010 engine, and a late 1800's three wheel baby cart if I remember right. I didn't see anything with a reserve in the second auction. Everything starts at $5 so even I can get a bid in.

Re: Al Maynard Auctions
the bad part is there is items that the auction company has no clue what they are. and also lots or bundles of items.
|
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
99 percent of Al"s good stuff was sold when he was still alive. The majority of this auction stuff was out of the outer buildings and at his other storage area. The 1 or 2 percent of his good stuff that was left was sold right after he passed away. The guns haven't sold yet and neither has the memorabilia He had A lot of stuff. Took the auction company 5 weeks to move all this stuff.
|
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
The "good stuff" should have been used and mixed in lots to move all the stuff that will never sell on thier own .

Lots of unidentified carbs (among other things) in the third auction coming up. How hard would it have been to take a picture of an air horn or a casting number on a block or head? Likely the auction workers aren't car guys. I guess that is why local auction companies sometimes pay me big bucks to identify car parts. |

That explains all the rusty junk that is being auctioned off then, His basement didn't have anything in it that looked as bad as most of this stuff does. |
Re: Al Maynard Auctions
those two motors seemed like a good deal..
I would have been a bidder if I it was closer to home...I would like to know what's up with the magnesium intake that goes with those hemi 302 0-dash porcupine heads..was that a GM part?? To make a magnesium intake cannot be so simple.. I know Al a complete had NOS hemi 302 and a few of them motors and heads..Jim at HBC bought most of the Camaro stuff from him a few years ago. It says the alum o-dash motor is one of two made??. I remember seeing one advertised for a while. I think Jack Podell had it.. wanted 50k I believe. But then I thought Charley has one of them in his 67 Z? That makes three with this one??? |

Did anyone here buy anything?
