30 Years Later

Re: 30 Years Later
Hard to believe that original article was 30 years ago already as I remember when it came out like yesterday..........time flies.

Re: 30 Years Later
That article generated a boatload of "Letters to the Editor" of that magazine for many months.
|
Re: 30 Years Later
It still is generating a lot of hatred on a Mopar board. :-)
|
Re: 30 Years Later
I am just young enough to have missed that article, but I do recall when the magazines were writing about Grand Nationals being faster than the Corvette and GM shutting them down. Buick has some history of serving up humble pie!
|
Re: 30 Years Later
I remember it well. I worked on and drove a 71 GS 455 stage 1 car and they are really quick. It is hard for the Mopar folks to believe there beloved Hemi got beat. But believe it. There are cars and engines that are a lot of hype. I have a first gen Z28 and know they are "remembered" to be greater than they really are. Numbers separate fact from fiction. That also sparked the 50 fastest list and the ringers. That helped push our car hobby/ addiction and helped legitimize it.

Re: 30 Years Later
I remember that article like it was yesterday too. It caused quite a stir before the internet. Imaging what a bruhaw it would cause today??!!

Re: 30 Years Later
What kind of rear gears were those cars running?...the Buick looked like it was flying down the quarter. Now I know why my grandfather always had a big Buick Wildcat

Re: 30 Years Later
I would be curious too Tom. I've never known Buicks to run 4 series gears. For Buick a 3:55 was like a 4.56 to a Chevy. Most had 3.0X gears and ran hard with all that torque.
|
Re: 30 Years Later
I don't have the original story in front of me, but I'm guessing both cars had stock gears, which would mean the Buick had 3.64s (doubt it had 3.42s) and the GTX had 3.54s or 4.10s.
|
Re: 30 Years Later
Yea, not really. The Buick owner raced, the GTX owner never had. The Buick had some mods, the GTX was stock with slicks. It was not scientific. Just started with someone spouting off about how great HEMIS were and could not be beat. Someone took up the offer to race any time anywhere. The Buick owner still has his car, the GTX owner sold his years ago.
|
Re: 30 Years Later
That Hemi with 2x4s needs to be set up right. It's amazing how much power they lose without being set up for the race. The Buick was clearly race ready.

This is not true, and if you read the story I posted, you'll see. |
Re: 30 Years Later
Case in point, look how long it took the S/S and A/FX guys to get the Hemi's running quicker than their Stage III motors in 64.

Re: 30 Years Later

Re: 30 Years Later
They are letting 30 year-old lies cloud their judgment, if not their biases.

Re: 30 Years Later
It gets better.Round 2 was 3 years later.Plenty of time for the Mopar guys to find the right car and driver. The Mopar guys won that one.
Round 3 was in Canada.Everyone was pumped for this tie breaker. The Mopar guys were not taking any chances and brought out the famed Hemicuda. The Diablo brothers brought their yellow GSX.I had seen the Diablo GSX run at the GSNats. This is one bad ass Buick. The lights came down and the Hemi gets nervous and cuts a red light giving him a major head start. The Buick still passed the Hemi at mid track! The Hemi realized he was outgunned and wanted no part of race 2 or 3.He drove right up on the trailer and took off, never to be seen again. |

I've seen a lot of that. Plus, whenever the competition gets into the lead, they just let off and pretend they weren't even racing. Just like little kids on the playground. |

.... and this dynamic played out again and again at the PSMCDR's for years. Then the firm of Clary, Johnson, Pennington and Simpson took the class the school!

Re: 30 Years Later
Don't forget Wayne Nelson. He showed the potential of L88 Corvettes when everyone else couldn't see it.

Yeah, too bad they're all clones though. |
Re: 30 Years Later
That video was pretty cool but that hemi sounded like a pig. It needed a lot of help to have a shot at that Buick. Great article too!!
