68 Nova dash painting question

Getting ready to repaint my 68 Nova dash top (textured flat black). So, was the VIN plaque on the dash top painted along with the dash top, or was the VIN plaque left bare metal and riveted to the dash top later?

I would think they were installed before paint at the start of the line..prob first thing attached to the new body.

Neither.
VIN tags were painted in an off-line booth.

Re: 68 Nova dash painting question

All the VIN tags I have ever had, painted black or not, were always a satin or eggshell black, regardless of the color interior. VIN plaque was non textured.

Re: 68 Nova dash painting question

VINS for Norwood Camaros were not installed by Fisher, they were assigned and installed by Chevrolet Assembly, which means they were done long after the body was painted,. Was Willow Run the same or was it a GMAD plant like Van Nuys?

Thanks. So, I will paint my dash top textured satin / flat black (black interior) and the VIN tag separate as a satin smooth black.

Re: 68 Nova dash painting question

The tags are not textured that I've seen. They are not coated very well either. That's a high moisture area from condensation. They tend to surface rust especially if you wiped the dash area often.
Just my observations.

Good point. When I repaint the tag I'll do it like I was an assembly line worker back in the day, Friday, close to quitting time. That should give it the right look!

Re: 68 Nova dash painting question

I need to paint my dash in my '69 Nova in the next month or so. Its also a standard black interior car.

Are the dash colors and textures the same for a '68 as a '69?

Any guidance anyone has on which paints (manufacturer and codes) to use for the dash top and dash face would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: 68 Nova dash painting question

Information I have says 68 and 69 were the same...Factory black paint was Lucite Code 88L (semi-gloss) and black dash top was Lucite Code 4428L (Flat)...not sure what kind of additive they added for the suede texture.

Re: 68 Nova dash painting question

Thank you, Martin, for the paint code info. My car's body is still with my body guy. We had to put a new floor and quarters on it. I should have it back in a month or so and then I'll be painting the dash. Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you!

Re: 68 Nova dash painting question

Your info is correct. Remember that Lucite is acrylic laquer. If you can get that, cool, but it's been my understanding that laquer is a hard to find item on the West coast due to state/area VOC compliance laws. FWIW
