NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
This never before seen picture was acquired by my great friend Mark Kickel from the widow of an Atlas employee. Taken July 8th 1968 on Route 19 outside of Canonsburg. The picture shows from left to right Don Yenko, kneeling with wheel is Ken Georgetti who worked at Atlas Foundry, Dominic Esposot owner of Atlas and Jennings Hart, who drove the Yenko truck among other things. This is a very important picture IMO. It shows the first relationship with Yenko and Atlas. Very few pictures of any 1968 Yenko Camaros exist for some reason. If you look close you can see the poor hood fit, what appears to be the Yenko add on spoiler, just because of its somewhat odd shape, and check out that antenna height. I have been told that poor radio reception was a problem with the 68 cars with the fiberglass hood. Enjoy, and thanks to Mark!..BKH https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-dsc_0001.jpg

Yes that is very cool.

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
What color is this car believed to be? It almost looks Black which is very, very cool!
|
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Brian, do you think this car has one of Yenko's glass deck lids with molded in spoilers?
|
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Brian and Mark - great pics - thanks mark for getting ahold of this pic!

It could be Fathom Blue. |
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Very cool pic Brian - thanks for posting. When I was debating which valve stems I should go with on my wheels, I NEVER considered valve stems like those!

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
There is a lot to take in on this single photo. The car could IMO be only Fathom Blue of British Green. The only colors in 1968 Yenko used that were dark. Sadly everyone in the picture has passed away except for Dominic who is 90+. Jennings Hart disappeared and was never found and is presumed dead. Since the car has no front spoiler I would guess that the rear spoiler was the Yenko add on. Only two, one piece units are referenced as far as I can tell....BKH

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
I like how the stripe appears to be cut out of the C on the side emblem. I've seen this on LA cars (68 DANA) but not typical on Norwood, let alone what I would presume to be a July car...?? This pic is a treat to look at, esp for a 68 fan. Thanks Mark & Brian.

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Great pic. Wild story about Jennings Hart disappearance.

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Great detail. I had never seen the lanyard cables on the hood pins before unless I missed them on other cars. I just wish this had been a photo of Dana's car and wonder if this car preceded his since the SS emblems are still on the fenders whereas his were removed. We believe his had the Yenko spoiler mounted on it as well and not the fiberglass decklid or GM spoiler. I still have the original decklid with the spoiler holes in it that do not match up with a GM spoiler lid. Neat detail on the antenna. Wonder what they used?
Thanks to Mark and Brian for sharing this photo. MAJOR historical value! |
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
great photo
could that be YS-8003 that is listed as Don's Demo car F blue early non COPO ? Looks to have a DMV decal in the windshield ? so they may have had it around the dealership awile. |
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Joe, I think your right. That was what I thought it might be as well...BKH

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Great picture. Was it possible to get the side stripe on a fathom blue car? Does anyone know when fathom blue went out of production and the date that the new style SS stripe went into production? Thanks

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
14x6 wheels with F70s? Such a great look.

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
So, what is the story behind Jennings Hart? What is the scuttlebut?

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
I recognize the bridge in the background.....That is Route 19 , where Route 519 passes under going to Eighty- Four, Pa. We used to give to give demo rides on 519 as it is twisty , with narrow concrete bridges ! Many times we should have had a clean underwear supply for potential customers after a test ride with one of us !

Dana's car YS8011 is Fathom Blue (- -) and has that stripe as well but no SS emblem and the low mounted Yenko badge and still wore it's original paint when I got it. |

Starting in January of 1968, the 1968 SS cars received the D90 sport stripe package. http://www.camaros.org/exterior.shtml#stripes |
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
fiberglass hoods do tend to stick up no matter what you do to them. Great pic

Fathom Blue was no longer available as a regular production color starting Jan 68. I am guessing that Dana's car was built after January 1968. Thanks for the info. |

The yenko in the photo appears to have an incorrectly painted SS stripe. It's probably an early 68 with the 67 style nose stripe, (before January 68)that yenko later decided to convert over the the 68 style stripe. |
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Looking at the VIN numbers, we are probably looking at the first 68 Yenko Camaro...
|
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
That rear spoiler looks like the one that has the rear lip that extends over the edge of the trunk lid. Only a few of those around that i know of.

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Great photo Brian
My car is a mid April build and it is/was Fathom Blue. Rick and I spent a lot of time discussing the spoiler options and concluded that my car had the Yenko rear spoiler and no front spoiler. After looking at this pic and other evidence I still believe in our conclusion. Now if anyone has an extra Yenko made rear spoiler, let me know. I know of 1 or 2 that got thrown away :-) |

Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Fathom Blue was discontinued in Jan of 68 I believe, but the dealer could order the previous color and thus you would get the Fathom Blue color with a -- code for paint on the trim tag since the code was no longer used for that year. All 68 Yenko's Fathom Blue should be -- code?
There are people on this site who know more about paint and codes than I do but that was the basics. |
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Gotcha, thanks
|
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Does the photo show any detail of the wheel center caps?
I blewup the photo but hard to tell what is on the center caps, if anything I have YS-8008 as FB with - - special paint trim tag in my notes |
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Are these early cars 9737?
And MM tags or not? Very cool pic!!! Great paint clarification too! ~ Pete |
Re: NEVER before seen 1968 Yenko Camaro with Atlas's
Pete, good question - do we know who has one of the earliest cars to check....if it was a 9737, it would have the 140 speedo and MM tag and the big sway bar to start. Most cars i have seen, including mine are from month 04 - 07E.
