Giant Brass Jones 8,000 RPM Tachometer

I recently purchased with huge Jones mechanical 8,000 RPM tach with a rat rod application in mind. I am wondering if anyone has an idea of what the original application of this tach could be.

Jones tachs are very expensive high quality pieces when new so I imagine it must have been removed from a expensive machine. I am thinking a big boat or industrial application of some sort but can't think of any that would need such a high RPM tach.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason

Im sure they were a Plymouth Roadrunner option. Quite rare and sold to new owners with longus-maximus-sightus.

It looks like a marine application. Perfect choice for a rat rod, since they never get driven, and no cable is available for it any way.

Read the name on the back carefully. It is very deceptive. &quot;Motrola&quot; is not &quot;Moto_rola&quot;.

There was some speculation that this was for a submarine, since it was made in Connecticut.

Re: Giant Brass Jones 8,000 RPM Tachometer

Thanks for the replies guys. I can't imagine it would take much to hook a cable up to it, just some thinking outside the box. The bigger issue would be getting the ratio right, which would also be done with some SW ratio reducers.

What I am really curious about is what it could have come off of.

Thanks,

Re: Giant Brass Jones 8,000 RPM Tachometer

A good automotive speedometer shop that can make you a cable for that to connect to a Corvette or MSD distributor. A couple years back, I had a custom length cable made up with special ends for my application by a shop named California Speedometer Repair/Service . . . something like that. The fellow was pretty sharp with this stuff. Send him a picture of the ends you need and the length and he custom makes them up for a reasonable price.

Re: Giant Brass Jones 8,000 RPM Tachometer

Every time you pick up something that you don't understand, you post a thread asking exactly what it is and what it's worth. Then by majic, it appears on ebay for sale. Maybe you should consider sending some sort of payment via percentage to the people who have helped you properly describe the item you are selling.
You are not the only one on this site who does that. And you are not the only one on this site who just uses it to sell parts. I think this site should be a better place for people with interests in these Super Cars to congregate and share information about them. I don't think this site should be a home base for parts flippers who use the experience of the members to help them make a profit.

I don't know if there's a way for Charley to control that, but it sure would be nice to see the &quot;users&quot; of this site just go away and leave it to the real car people who are here. There really should be a way to separate your kind from the rest who have a real interest in these cars other than what they can make by selling parts.

Thanks Sam. I will check into getting it setup if I end up keeping it. I am the everything is for sale type of person so I tossed it up on eBay with a significant reserve to see if anyone wants it more that me. I planned to have it start on Thursday so I could have a bit more time to figure out it original application but muffed it up somehow and started it in the middle of the day today.

Thanks again,

Jason

Re: Giant Brass Jones 8,000 RPM Tachometer

Wow, I did not realize I was ruffling any feathers. I do post a lot of parts here and do ask a lot of questions. Most of the parts I post are in the for sale section. The others I post because I think people would be interested in seeing them and I was not able to find any info posted on the web about the specific part. Yes, they likely will be for sale eventually but that is not the intent of the post.

If noone is interested in seeing the parts I post I simply will not post them. It takes quite a bit of time to take pictures, upload them to photobucket, then post them here. Yes, many times I post the parts I am selling here for sale. Rarely is a buyer or bidder a member. I thought this was a club where we share things and learn.

I have been a member here since 2001 and have almost 4000 posts. If my posts are not welcome here I will be hurt and simply will not post as often. I spend a lot of time here reading and learning. I thought I was reciprocating by posting so others could do the same. Maybe that is not the case.

Verne,

The guys on here who sell some parts usually help the people who are building or restoring their vehicles. They also contribute to discussions on part number help, parts identification, finding hidden supercars and projects, and uncovering vehicle history and past ownership. Without parts guys, there would be a lot of unfinished vehicles out there missing quite a few hard to find parts that were thrown away or went missing many years ago by past owners.

I'm a parts flipper too, but I never put parts up for sale on this site. Any information I have or come across I'll gladly share with any one, and some of the info I gain from this site makes me better at what I do. The animosity towards parts sellers is exactly why I don't actively try to sell my items here. I believe that we are doing a large service even if it's just by posting pictures of rare items and taking some of the mystery out of what parts are (and or were) available. I know that some of you like to keep your knowledge close to the chest so that you will be in a better situation when it comes time to bid on an item and I can respect that. It's just not my style though.

I usually try to keep my feelings on this subject to myself, but yesterday things boiled over. After working in this heat every day with no AC, having a frustrating issue with a co-worker, then receiving some bad news from my doctor, it all erupted. Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but I still feel the same about some people who do little more in this hobby than buy &amp; sell. It may just be me, but I can't change the strong feelings I have about that.

Verne,

I've seen you buy and sell since the 1980's when I first started going to the swap meets. You were just recently set up at the GM Nationals. What makes that any different than what a few regular guys post up on here?

I am not a paying member so you guys may not care what I think. That being said, the only parts sellers on here I have a problem with are the ones that only use the site to sell. Guys like Jason that post in other sections with info and try to help other members should be fine with using the site to sell parts. There are a couple guys here that only use this site and others like this to try to sell parts. I think one reason they list their parts here is because guys with $250K cars are usually willing to pay more for a part they need than a guy with a $25K car. JMO

Yep, that's the one swap meet I do each year. (once in a while E-town but not lately) I'm too old and unhealthy to finish projects I've bought parts for over the years, so they can go to someone else who can use them. I don't buy parts to flip them.

Verne </div></div>

I was just giving a current example. Don't forget all of the Late Great shows and Spring Carlisle's back in the day that you used to set up and sell at when the 409 and 1958-1964 market was hot. If you can honestly say you never bought something at a swap meet or anywhere else to resell at a profit then I must have my eyes checked.

Verne_Frantz 07-17-2013 10:38 PM

Re: Giant Brass Jones 8,000 RPM Tachometer

I didn't sell 409 parts; I kept them. This could go on and on, so let me just say that I am not in your league, Matt. Please don't persist in this silly comparison.
I have a hobby, I have cars and projects that I've owed for many many years that I intend to keep (not flip) and they need parts. I've never supplimented my income or counted on an income from selling parts. I've never gone through a swap meet with the intention of buying everything I could find that I could turn a profit on. I was looking for things I wanted for myself. If I happened to see something for $20. that I could sell for $50, I &quot;might&quot; have bought it to help offset my own expenses, or I might have just kept my money in my pocket because I was still looking for things I wanted for myself. My intentions and practices were/are very, very different from yours.

By the way, I remember you from those early days when you were at swap meets with your Dad (who did the same thing) when you were just out of diapers. You learned well. He can be proud of you.

Verne

Re: Giant Brass Jones 8,000 RPM Tachometer

Sometimes I'll make a sarcastic comment with the people I know on the site, but it may not always translate as intended via the net. I'm fine with most of the questions asked from people looking to maximize their RTI, but I can see Vern's gripe over this particular tach. Not really muscle car related, so collectively we've become a strong catch-all resource for unrelated parts and such.

I am in sales and probably can't see through my personal bias. I don't have any issue with anyone buying and selling for a profit. It amlost started to seem like there was an unofficial rule villanizing the selling of parts unless they were at a loss. I try to buy low and sell high, but often I can only find what I want at high prices and I do end paying or even overpaying by some people's standards. In the end I am happy with my purchases.

I thought Matt's spot at Carlisle this year was probably the best collection of parts in the place and his prices seemed fair to me. I would like to encourage more to bring those kind of parts out.

I also consider myself lucky to have local guys churning things up and flushing things out, and I can swing by and check out. But don't get me wrong. Most of us enjoy the thrill of finding rare parts etc. So a healthy balance is nice. Seems we have that most of the time.

SuperNovaSS 07-18-2013 12:42 AM

Re: Giant Brass Jones 8,000 RPM Tachometer

Thanks for the posts everybody. I think posting this tach here was probably a mistake since it is not muscle car related at all, although that is why I posted it in the lounge. I was amazed when I saw the size of this tach and I thought others would be interested and possibly would be able to ID the original application.

I do plan to keep the tach, that is why I put such a high reserve on it($1000). However, if someone did need it for a proper restoration of its orignal application(which is????) than they would need it more than me and the reserve could be a bargain.

Verne,

I have a ton of unfinished projects as well. This began as a hobby for me and morphed as a way of life over time. I love working on muscle cars and the parts are part of it. I think everyone wishes they could do what they love and I am lucky enough to do just that.
