Muncie M22 1972 GTO?
I picked up a couple of M22 Muncies at Spring Carlisle. One is a P1A05C CT Counter Transmission with a metal tag stamped 3968012WM and the other is a P2S17C VIN Stamping 22P135086, which appears to be 1972 Pontiac Michigan plant A body Pontiac, GTO possibly. Now, how many 1972 GTO would have been built with a M22? Probably not many. Maybe the car is out there somewhere. Rare I think.

Re: Muncie M22 1972 GTO?
All the 455 equipped 1972 GTOs should have came with the M22.
Someone picked up the 1971 M22 I had for sale but I guess it wasn't you. |
Re: Muncie M22 1972 GTO?
Correct. Any Pontiac with a 455HO in 71 and 72 came with the M22 - GTOs and Firebirds.

Fast 67, if you were on the left side over the hill in the back forty, it was me. I could not believe that I found one M22 in one row and then in the next row directly behind where I found the first one, there was the second one. So I felt obligated to buy them both. Are you the guy that had the Hurst shifter?

Re: Muncie M22 1972 GTO?
Were they "finds"---I mean did the sellers know what they were? There is some stuff still out there!

Re: Muncie M22 1972 GTO?
I found the two M22s, they knew what they were but not the details I suppose. I also found NOS 68-9 Nova grille, NOS Nova plastic bumper filler, NOS NOva hood ornaments. Prices were real good. I invested $2700 into the two M22s, they are both in excellent condition and do not need any work and are both original gearsets. I love Carlisle.

I was set up in the infield a few rows from the grandstand. I saw the Muncie in the back circle. It was priced right. Here is a pic of my setup (I was only setup on Friday)

I couldn't make it as I am laid up from MAJOR back surgery. I should be there at GM, although the swap area can't compare. Great job!

Some clarification: - The base 455 was only available with an automatic. - The HO was available with a 4-speed or automatic (I assume you meant to say "All the 455 equipped four-speed..."). - The 455 HO was available on the LeMans, LeMans Sport, and LeMans GT too. - The 3-speed was available behind the HO but only in 1971. |
Re: Muncie M22 1972 GTO?
Fast, I saw your stuff. Good stuff. I shopped mostly wednesday and thursday. Picked up the two M22s within minutes on Thursday near end of day. The P2 unit is nice and clean. The P1 dirty out of a car but just as nice internally. I got the P2 for $1500 and the P1 for $1000. Cannot beat that. A guy way over on the fence, the old section had a B plant P1 M22 and wanted like $3500 for it. A dirty takeout. Not much for 12 bolt stuff there. Almost NO engine stuff like pistons, cams etc there. One huge pile of 7/8 pin Muncies at high prices.

CT - Chevrolet Transmission, it's a warranty replacement. Nice find. As a suggestion, you should put the pontiac A-body trans as 'available to car owner' over on the performance years Pontiac site. |
Re: Muncie M22 1972 GTO?
I suppose someone out there would like to have it for their Pontiac. I purchased it for my 1968 Nova SS behind a L72. And the other one for my 1970 Camaro SS LS6 Motion clone with a NOS Hurst RamRod. I have other M22s in my collection, so I could let it go. I will post it in Performance Years and see what happens. Maybe I could trade it for something else and help out someone.

Re: Muncie M22 1972 GTO?
It could have even been a 400 in '71 or '72 if it was ordered with a close ration.
