Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

I purchased a 1970 Chevelle last year from and old guy in Neveda. Story was that his friend had it sitting in his yard for years and he finally sold it to this guy. He buys and sells old muscle cars that he finds as a hobby.

Upon getting the car there was a few things that caught my attention. First was that it was a front disc brake car and a functional cowl induction car. Definately a big block car and was a factory 4 speed car with what appeared to be the original 12 bolt rear in it. Car appeared to be highly optioned as the power window regulators were still in the doors. Car is a 100% original sheet metal car and only needs tiny patches over one rear wheel. As well, it is a special paint code car as indicated by the trim tag that is still on the car.

Now, fast forward to a few days ago. I needed a 12 bolt for another one of the 1970 Chevelles that we restored and are putting together. I decided to pull he 12 bolt out of this particular car. Low and behold - rear is coded CRW0218B2. LS6 only 4:10 heavy duty posi. Also has boxed trailing arms, heavy duty front sway bar.

Unfortunately the seats are gone as is the rest of the interior and drivetrain. I am really starting to think this is an original LS6 car but need help from the gurus.

Minus a build sheet or motor with stamped vin and LS6 suffix - is there any other way to identify this car?

Without all that it will be hard to say it is in fact a LS6 car.
If you have the rear end only, let us know the stamps on there and we will decode it for you to start.

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

Yes, but just discovered that it has the LS6 rear in it. Putting that and all the other things about the car together makes me believe that it might be a true LS6 car. I cannot say for sure that is why I was asking for any assistance in identifying it.

Also, if the hood to the car is original, it is a functional cowl induction hood with hood pin holes drilled from factory.

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

That is an LS6 only rear end which is a good thing but not convincing enough to say the car is actually a real LS6 car without the rest of the drive train missing and no documents.

Does the car have a gauge package? i know you mentioned the interior is gone but thought i ask if the gauges survived?

Looking back at the link i posted, i spot a picture that clearly shows your car came with a four speed bench seat because of the unique shifter hump i see.

Unfortunately that is gone to the best of my knowledge. I will have to go back and take a look at that car to see if there are any remnants of the dash cluster left.

That's a Van Nuys trim tag. If your car still has its gas tank, pull it down to look for a possible buildsheet as most Van Nuys Chevelles had one there.

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

It does still have a gas tank in it. We are going to pull the tank on Monday and hope that the build sheet is still there. After talking to a few guys it really has all the indicators to be a real LS6 car but I know without papers or drivetrain it would be impossible to prove.

If the build sheet is not there I may try to do a owner search on the car as I would hate to see a real LS6 car not put back to the way it should be. Also being a special paint car makes it all the more reason to.

It is a special paint code car - lemans blue and there is still some of the paint left on the car. You can see the original color inside the door.

Hope you find a buildsheet that is legible.
I found one in my 70 convertible built in Van Nuys, and it was filthy, but after cleaning we were able to read most everything on it.
VIN covered

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

It's wasn't Lemans blue,it was Mulsanne blue.
Besides Buick, that 927 AF-017 code was known in 1970 by Chevrolet as paint code #26 Mulsanne Blue.
Aka...LUCITE code #5190L or FISHER code #4069.
It was an std. RPO color for the 1970 Corvette, but was known as one of the special ordered paint colors to be on the 1970 Chevelle.
So far I've seen 5 other 1970 chevelles with that code. Both Malibu & SS.
Two 1970 Monte Carlos as well.
Beginning in 1971 to 1972 it was an std. RPO Chevelle color.
In 1973,1974 & 1975,it became known as code #26 Bright Blue Metallic.

Also, get a 1970 assembly manual and compare the drawings in the body section to look for certain firewall piercings that might indicate if it was even a Super Sport.

----Looking at the pictures, I would think the tach might be one of the best indicators as to weather the car is at the very least a high horse 70 Chevelle. I think we would all agree that the tach has probably never been tampered with. Weather the car is an LS6 or an L78, its a rare car. It wouldnt be my number one candidate for a resto, but there are plenty of people out there who would tackle the job.......Bill S

Unfortunately the dash is not there any longer - but the gas tank is still in it so I am praying it hasn't been tampered with over the years. There may be some of the dash components laying in the car - I have to get my guy back to the shop to see what is there and what isn't. He is going to record dropping the tank in the car.

This pic shows the tank still in the car and the car also has alot of the other indicators that it could be a LS6 car. If it is a true LS6 and special order paint code car it is probably out of my realm in restoring it the way it should be done. It would make a great project for someone as it is still a 100% original sheetmetal car with just tiny patches needed over drivers side wheel house. I have the original cowl induction hood that is drilled for hood pins to go with the car.

This was absolutely a big block car - I dont doubt that. I am just trying to determine whether or not it is a LS6 car.

I will get pics of the underside of hood.

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

Post a photo of the transmission tunnel area showing the speedo clips. You may also want to try wet sanding the firewall to to bare steel VERY gently and slowly with 600 grit paper and photo document it. There may be some grease pencil markings on the firewall that may also help decode what the car was originally. Certainly a very restorable car.

Don't get ahead of yourself.
I know your trying to determine if it was an LS-6 Super Sport, and that rearend is a very good start as it precedes the date of your cars VIN.
But beginning in 1970,you could have a std.Big Block Malibu built on the assembly line with a Big Block LS-3 330HP/402cid.in it...even have round "SS" gauges put in it too,but still not a Super Sport.

Your car may have been an original L-34 or LS-5 too, then someone installed the 4:10 rearend later on.

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

Not that it helps prove anything - the sequence number of my car is 1826** with body number 04A/07133 and was built right after and right before (2) documented LS6 Van Nuys cars.

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

This car still has what appears to be the original boxed trailing arms and has the 7/8" rear sway bar. What cars was the option available on?

And if the hood is original to the car - it is a functional cowl induction with factory hood pin holes. Could a Malibu have that option? Could you special order a paint code on a Malibu?

GreenLS6 04-20-2013 06:54 PM

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

All 70 SS396 350/375 hp and all SS454 390/450 hp cars got the boxed ares and sway bar.And I believe Big Block Malibu also.

Mr70 04-20-2013 06:55 PM

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

The heavy duty F41 suspension that was included in the Chevelle Super Sport pckge.,was also possible as a separate option on any Big Block equipped Malibu......as in the LS-3 330Hp/402cid.

You could specify a non std.paint color & pay extra to special order it on nearly every vehicle GM model.

Working Cowl Ind. hoods were specific to Super Sports only.
That hood & that rearend are your best clues right now.
Hopefully dropping that tank will uncover an LS-6 buildsheet.

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

I am going to pull the tank on the car Monday. Hoping this reveals what I am looking for.

As well, I spoke to the person I bought the car from. He is a 70 year old man from Nevada. He got the car from "Starving Marvin" a small town local renowned car painter. Story has it that the wealthy owner took the car apart and dropped it off at the body shop "at least 10 years ago but could be 20" and didnt come back for it. He is going to pay Marvin a visit to see what information he can get on the car and to see what he knows about it and possibly the owners name that dropped the car off. He told me that the tank has never been out of the car since it was dropped off at the body shop.

If the previous owner cannot get me any information and there is no build sheet on top of the tank I am going to try and do an owner history on the car. It is most likely a local car that could have a limited number of owners.

This single wire that is coming through the grommet just to the right of the throttle cable location on firewall - is that a tach lead or is it the ZL2 harness like the Kansas City cars had? Where would the tach lead be drilled on a Van Nuys built car or was it part of the harness?

Thank you...I appreciate everyone's help with this car. The moment of truth may come as soon as we get that tank dropped. I have invested a large amount of time in studying Chevelles and LS6 cars specifically. If it turns out not to be I will come away knowing alot more about these cars than I ever did.

Is there quite possibly someone on this forum that may have remembered this car from back in the day? I purchased it from Wadsworth, NV and it was believed to be a local car.

Re: Help With Possible LS6 Chevelle

As scheduled we dropped the tank on this car today and as miracles would have it the buildsheet was there.

I am sure everyone wants to know what it revealed - drum roll please.......

ANOTHER LS6 HAS BEEN FOUND ! !!! !!

I am processing all the pictures of the buildsheet now and will upload shortly.

My question is - how can I extract the buildsheet correctly without destroying it? It is very dry and frail but perfectly legible.

Not really stuck to tank but crumbling. Easy to read but wants to turn to dust !!

Car came from Herb Hallman Chevrolet in Reno NV. Just as I thought didn't travel far. From searching looks like they are Champion Chevrolet now. Anyone know this dealership?

Don't remove it. Leave it on the tank. It is too important to mess with. Have a document Conservator look at it and see if it can be stabilized, then cut the tank around it!
