1969 Allen Green Camaro Runway Friction Test ZL1?
I had lunch today with some retired airline pilots. One gent brought in a 1970 Airline Pilot's Association (ALPA) magazine. In it there was this photo of an Allen Green 1969 Camaro (maybe ZL1?) towing a device to measure runway friction in Seattle. This was only a photo with a Pan Am 747 in the back ground and the caption below; no other info. This is right around the time the 747 was getting release for service.
I think you'll enjoy this tidbit if this hadn't been discussed already. Phil Woj. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps87299dfb.jpg The magazine the photo was in: http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psf62820e0.jpg |

Phil
I'll guarantee I have a lot of time in that Piedmont 737/200 on the cover. Can't read the N#. In my mind, the greatest airline in the history of earth. Mark |
Re: 1969 Allen Green Camaro Runway Friction Testing
SS/CA so it was an automatic? Cool if it was an alloy 427.

Re: 1969 Allen Green Camaro Runway Friction Testing
Last time I saw that car was at Super Chevy Pomona '98. Reggie had his man Chip selling it along with a F.Grn/Grn 4sp. Copo. Zl1 was priced at $75k, and the Copo at 25K. No mention whatsoever of being rebodied.

Re: 1969 Allen Green Camaro Runway Friction Testing
So was that car originally a ZL-1? I'm fascinated by the subject on this one. I've heard of 69 L78 el Caminos being used as chase vehicles for U2 aircraft on landing to stabilize the wings, it was a bicycle landing gear plane. Anyway, thought it neat to see this car in service in 1970 all painted up with an interesting mission. We use friction readings to this day to calculate takeoff and landing performance of large planes.

Re: 1969 Allen Green Camaro Runway Friction Testing
SS/CA would probably mean it was a 427 car and not a 396 car. Aluminum motor car would maybe make it a SS/BA car if it is NHRA weight. I think Chuck ran B/MP with his Zl-1 at one point. Great car in that paint scheme.

</div></div> You can also pick up a used 747 that is the same vintage as the camaro for the price of a fine ZL1. That and about 100 gallons of paint, you could put the Pan Am livery on the jet and duplicate history. Phil Woj. |

The suits managed it right into extinction, with help from "cost control" mania of the late '70s onward. (Post-deregulation.) All that service and glamor came at a cost. That had to be cut. And now back to your regularly scheduled program. |

There was a revival of the name Pan Am in the early 90's, lasted about 2 years. |

No way Pan Am would hire a girl who had choppers like that. She could eat an apple through a tennis racket! Corn on the cob through a venetian blind! She was probably a real cut-up and lots of fun on layovers. Kept her gag teeth on hand to joke with the passengers or spook a$$-grabbing businessmen. (Man, we hijacked the heck outta' this thread! This was the Allen Green ZL-1. And it was a automatic This pic was taken by a close friend at a Seattle area track that doesn't exist anymore |
Re: 1969 Allen Green Camaro Runway Friction Test ZL1?
Dan Do you have access to any
more pics as i bought the #27 as the Candy Red B/MP As I was in the Army/ Viet Nam I never saw the car raced by Dick Tutino. The lace paintjob was over the factory Fathom Green |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...20pics/ZL1.jpg The condition as I bought the #27 in 1975. Born with ZL-1 aluminum block/heads was running Edelbrock tunnel ram and two 4500 Hollys. Chrysler/Liberty 4 spd and Dana 60 Diff (?? ratio) Car had OEM wheel house, and compared to todays 69' Camaro stock class NHRA had terrible suspension |
Re: 1969 Allen Green Camaro Runway Friction Test ZL1?
Why would someone cover up that beautiful Alan Green lace and gold livery with ugly red paint? What a shame they didn't just put their own name in gold on the side like the 'Alan Green' treatment. Car must have been stunning to see at the track. Thanks for the pics.

Re: 1969 Allen Green Camaro Runway Friction Test ZL1?
Its not the same Camaro, only same Vin#

Re: 1969 Allen Green Camaro Runway Friction Test ZL1?
Yep, it certainly sounds like the real car didn't survive unfortunately but it certainly cemented the ZL-1 legend in history!
