Yep, this is what people used to do on weekends before the Internet and before 450 channel satellite TV packages!

Re: who can identify this drag strip?
Is that the GoKart track to the right of the pic?
Damn we used to have some good times down there. Trivia question: Alton Dragway owner/manager/promoter John Storey used to pay a Chicago area racer $50 a week to tow his race car to Alton and compete against the 'Local Guys'. And at one time, John offered him $100 to bring TWO cars. That Chicago racer is still active, although with a different car. It's someone we all know. |

Re: who can identify this drag strip?
Ken ran a '39 Cadillac at the time. (Still has one in his barn; maybe the same one . ) John offered him $50 to tow from Elgin and race at Alton, ................. on a number of occasions!
Ken eventually 'upgraded' to a '55 Chevy, but kept the Caddy (big surprise, eh?) and John continued his offer, ....... until he eventually offered Ken $100 to bring BOTH cars. Mind you, this was in the late 50s-early 60s so $50 wasn't anything to sneeze at. Gas was $.25 a gallon at the most and it was a chance to race and get paid for it! We'll have to get the whole story from Ken again because I don't recall what his tow vehicle was then. This was long before he built the luxurious hauler below. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8a8ecfa4.jpg |
