Mystery Aluminum Exhaust Manifolds Can Anyone ID?

I picked these strange ALUMINUM exhaust manifolds up at a swapmeet this weekend. They are very interesting. I am not sure how they would survive without cracking, warping, etc. but have been used before. Can anyone help with possible identification? The ports are spaced too far apart for big block Chevy. Possibly Boss 302/351C but the ports still look too far apart. Maybe Diesel or something? They are really cool, I just have no idea what they fit.

Thanks,

Jason

How about a boat? They tend to use these over the regular ones due to the salt in the water/air

Just a thought.

That was my first inpression their from a boat.

Definitely a marine application.

I'm thinking Ford also. Take one into an auto parts store and try out some exhaust manifold gaskets.

I thought boat too but these are not water cooled.

Thanks,

The only aluminum exhaust manifold application I can think of for a car is early Pontiac Super Duty

Looks similiar to 351 Cleveland mounting pattern and spacing, however, the lower leg is spaced too close to the exhaust port. Ford did mark all of their experimental and production pieces with part numbers. I have never seen any Ford experimental parts without a part number on them.

That log style manifold was only used in 1964-1967 Mustang non HIPO engines. I don't think they would fit anything else.

Thanks for the comments. This is a staggered bolt pattern.

Yes I know. I was just stating that the particular style of log design was close. Interesting they have 3 exhaust bolt mounting holes. Fords usually only had two.

Ok, I understand now.

Thanks Matt,

That almost looks like a typical 3-bolt header collector flange.

Re: Mystery Aluminum Exhaust Manifolds Can Anyone ID?

Do they fit the old Mark II 427 (looks similar to the MARKIV introduced in 1965) that came out for NASCAR in 1963 which some refer to as the "Mystery Motor"?

Re: Mystery Aluminum Exhaust Manifolds Can Anyone ID?

That is an interesting thought. I imagine it is a distant chance but just in case, does anyone have a head, exhaust manifold, or gasket from one of these engines?

Thanks,

Jason

The diagonal bolt arrangement is similar to the Mystery Motor but they are not for that motor. The ports are rectangular; the ports on the MM were basically round.

Re: Mystery Aluminum Exhaust Manifolds Can Anyone ID?

The reason I mention it is because the bolt alignment is correct, whereas everything else from every other manufacturer I found was different.

I thought X or 0 marked parts were usually GM prototype/engineering.

Re: Mystery Aluminum Exhaust Manifolds Can Anyone ID?

These are what the ports look like on a '63 427 Mystery Motor. There was a lot of head development work going on by Dick Keinath, so it may be possible that those manifolds might have been made for an earlier design port (for testing purposes). Unfortunately, Dick is no longer with us so that question will probably never be answered.

In case anyone was interested in these or knew what they fit and were biting their tongue, I just put them on Ebay at no reserve. I hope someone know what they are and can use them or make a fortune if they are rare.

These are ending tonight if anyone knows what they fit or wants to roll the dice.

Good Luck,

so did the buyer tell you what they fit? kind'of expensive for wall decor.

Re: Mystery Aluminum Exhaust Manifolds Can Anyone ID?

Actually, I don't think that was a lot of money for them at all. ANY V8 aluminum exhaust manifolds with apparent factory casting marks should bring a premium value. I think the buyer got a good deal, even if it takes him a long time to identify them.

There are many people (and a few on this site) who gamble for the big payoff later.

Re: Mystery Aluminum Exhaust Manifolds Can Anyone ID?

I think they got a deal too. They have not paid yet. I will ask them about application after they have been paid and delivered since many buyers may want to hold onto that info until the parts are in their hands.

I think you're going to find out that they came from a diesel boat

A diesel V8??? Without water in the manifolds??? The plot thickens............

Re: Mystery Aluminum Exhaust Manifolds Can Anyone ID?

Ports and bolt pattern sure look similar as 6.2 or 6.5 diesel gmc. Manifolds I taking a big guess here but they look like early Glenwood exhaust as early glenwood stuff never had a name but did have a part numbers and wasn't polished (cast finish).
