Found my 69 Yenko, 649313

Back in 1983 I sold a yellow 69 Yenko Camaro,649313. I have been trying to find out what happened to it, hoping the guy I sold it to still had it and would sell it back to me. Just dreaming, I sold it for $9000 for home down payment. In a recent post I see it sold at Russo & Steele for approx. $230K. I was looking thru some old photo boxes and came across some pictures I thought I’d share. I am embarrassed to show the side stripe pictures, that is all my budget and artistic talent could do at time. If I remember the stripes were available but very very expensive.
The car did not have a hood stripe, side stripes, or headrest markings when I bought it. It did have one Yenko emblem on the back that I & Barry Hampton sent to Japan to be reproduced. I put the repro emblems on the fenders and I believe the fender holes were drilled already. It didn't have any 427 emblems while I had it. It was an all original drive train car & I think the interior was all original also. I bought it from a struggling student that had pulled the 427 and installed a 327 so he could afford to drive it. Today I see it didn't have the curved neck radiator but overall it was fairly original under the hood. I am pretty sure it had a 140 mph speedo and I installed a factory 4 speaker AM-FM. Here are the pictures I found and I have some other Yenko pictures I’ll post also.George. |

George -
Where those pictures taken inside the old Classic Motors/Bill Jacobs in Joliet, or was that Downers Grove by then? Cool pictures thanks for sharing. Jake |

Those pictures were taken at Classic Motors in Joliet, I guessing 1982.
The Blue VIN sticker, I may have gotten from Barry Hampton, I now know that would be 3 months premature for it to have it. I learn something new every 30 years. George |

Very cool George. Looks a little better than my Z when my younger brother drug it home with the engine removed in 1975. Ducted hood was mia, but you can still see the white stripes on the cowl vent panel.
The second pic is the Mini-Brute "muscle car" I traded for the Z in 1976. |

Lynn, in 1976 I would say your brother got the better end of the trade, but today it sounds like you made out better. Any progress pictures of your car sounds like you are getting closer. George

Re: Found my 69 Yenko, 649313
I have a picture of your yellow Douglass Yenko from the mid 70s I have to find it. Notice both white cars have emblems moumted above the fender body line. The rear Yenko emblem is also the same.

He was only 15, in way over his head, and really needed reliable transportation. The Opel wasn't pristine. I had sideswiped a pole and had to put a fender and door on it, then painted it my my garage with a rented compressor and a borrowed Binks Model 7, and converted that crappy solex carb to a rochester two barrel. But it was very reliable. Even to this day, he says he considered himself the winner on that deal... at the time. I had regretted parting with my first Z/28, and really wanted another. Got a pile of parts in the deal, including many original Z parts. He totaled the Opel a few months later, so I probably rescued this one from the crusher. Will try and post some progress pics after this weekend. Got the headliner in, the windows, weatherstrip, instrument cluster and all the wiring. I have one side marker light that won't light (no power to the socket), so have to disassemble part of the front harness to find the problem. Hoping to have front and rear glass installed by the weekend. |
Re: Found my 69 Yenko, 649313
That kid needed a diaper just to ride in the Yenko.

Re: Found my 69 Yenko, 649313
And probably a diaper change after the ride!

Re: Found my 69 Yenko, 649313
ssl78, I liked to see that picture if you can find it.
I have a story related to the diaper coments. In 1983 I was a proud new father and decided to take my son for a ride in my Yenko. It rode really stiff, and he looked like a bobble head toy straped in the car seat. That was his one & only ride.I was afraid I was going to break him. Twenty eight years later I was looking for my old car or another to restore. Every available car I showed to my son he said that's nice but it's "NoYenko". We found another car to restore, and the name stuck with me. George |
