Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
Some guy on the Pontiac site is claiming that Cowl Induction hoods were installed on COPO 427s, Z10s, Z11s, and that's it. In other words, none were installed on Z/28s or SS 350 or SS 396 cars.
I think he's all wet - does anyone have a documented SS or Z with the ZL2 hood? |
Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
Jerry MacNeish's '69 Camaro book has reprints of several SS and Z/28 docs showing factory-installed ZL2 hoods. One of them belongs to a family member who is the original owner.
The guy on the Pontiac site should stick with what he knows. |
Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
I think he worked at a dealer back then and never saw one. But we know how that is sometimes. FWIW, he seems to be an esteemed member otherwise.

Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
I have an unmolested survivor 1969 SS Camaro with the ZL2 hood. I first saw the hood on a Indy pace car at the New York auto show around April 2 or third 1969. On Monday morning I called my salesman and had it put on my order and the rest is history. The car was built the first week in May. I hope this helps. Jim

Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
I recall GM magazine advertising for cowl induction hoods being available on other models. It was "Super Scoop" or something similar, and had an SS in the picture (I think)...
Been awhile. |
Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
jb, I agree, but the ad doesn't signify that any were available for the SS or Z. Still, you're suggesting he's all wet, which is the answer I was looking for.

Factory photos may not be be proof, but apparently someone slapped a hood on this Z while it was making eyes with the pretty girl.
And from "Camaro : Untold Secrets".... In 1969, the Camaro was treated to an incredibly stylish and functional piece of optional equipment, known affectionately by enthusiasts as the "Cowl Induction hood". It was featured in a couple of Camaro advertisements where it was referred to as the Camaro "Super Scoop", yet on the dealer's order forms it was listed as RPO ZL2-"Special Ducted Hood"! Actually, the special ducted hood was only one part of a complete fresh air/induction system. The system consisted of a raised panel hood, special air cleaner and throttle operated air intake valve. The option listed for $79 and was available only in combination with the optional higher performance engines on SS, Z/28 and COPO models. Popularity of RPO ZL2 is reflected in a high sales figure of just over 10,000 units for that model year. Not sure if that helped.... |
Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
gm made lots of money on those hoods after 1969... only 10,028 cars came with cowl hood in 1969
|
Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
My '69 Z/28 as well as my buddies had factory installed cowl induction hoods.
|
Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
My 69 Z/28 came with a ducted hood.
And yes, GM sold many more over the counter than they did in 1969. |

Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
This ad specifically calls out SS and Z28 availability.

Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
About 2 years ago noted Camaro Guy Larry Christensen examined a survivor 12C LA Z/28 built with ZL2. ZL2 is noted on the BBC.
ZL1s #1 & #2 were built at Norwood and had 12E tags. No telling exactly when they rolled off the assembly line but it may be that a Z/28 was the first ZL2 car built. |
Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
I would say most Z/28's came with flat hoods. There were only 10,000 some ducted hoods available and all the COPO's, and the big and small block pace cars got them so that left the rest for the SS and Z/28 cars. Don't think they appeared till late, late December or early January of 69.

Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
I have seen estimates of approx 10% of the Z/28's with ducted hood. Of the 10,000 hoods, all the Z11 and Z10 cars got it. I believe there were less than 4000 of those combined. Pretty sure all the 200 Yenkos got it. Also all the other COPO cars and the 69 ZL1's. So, now you are down to like 5000 spread across SS and Z/28. Even if NO SS cars got it (but of course, some did) that only leaves 5000 for the 20,000 Z's (of course there are 40,000 69 Z/28's for sale today). So... by extrapolation, somewhere between 10% and 20% max, right?

I think you are right on target Lynn!

Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
My SS is a documented ZL-2 hood car. Original paint, unrestored, sales contract, Chassis Broadcast Copy, Protecto Plate, all original air cleaner componants and stickers.

Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
Chevrolet rolled up option totals only where the option was specifically listed. For example is it correct to state only 116 Camaros were built with CE1 Headlight Washers? Of course not-it was included on each of the 37,773 RS cars. But as standard RS equipment CE1 is not listed on docs for them. Other options such as D96 [5,176] are the same-listed and counted only when specifically ordered.
ZL2 was included with COPO 9560 & 9561 [not listed on docs] and I doubt it is included in the 10,026 total. COPO production was low, maybe 800-900 units. ZL2 was a mandatory option[listed on docs] for Z10 & Z11 so that reduces the total to around 6,000 units. By the time it became available almost 84,000 Camaros had been produced. Based on engine production data about 4,500 Z/28s had been built 12/31/68 leaving 15,800 that could have been ordered with it. SS production was probably more linear [14.4% total] perhaps about 19,000 non Z10/Z11 SS cars. So that leaves about 6,000 hoods distributed over 34,800 units; 17.24 %. Maybe 2,724 Z/28s and 3,276 SS cars. And that assumes equal distribution. |
Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks
William, I was going to suggest the same thing.
It can be terribly confusing. |
