Here in The Greater Toronto Area in Canada we are getting rain for one straight week because of "Sandy" thats depressing but i guess it is better news than a Hurricane.

This rain should cause some flooding in some areas.

We spent yesterday stocking up on dog and cat food. People were looking at us like we were zombies - with their carts full of eggs and milk and gasoline.

Hey, you can never be too careful when you have 3 dogs and 3 cats and only 4 people. It's like North and South Korea here. We'd be in real trouble if they suddenly joined forces and took over the house.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Latest update:

The dogs found something incredibly stinky in the back yard and all of them rolled in it. I got an urgent text from the wife demanding that I return home and immediately wash the dogs because they may be stuck inside for the next 3 days.

That was entertaining to say the least:

The Jack Russell took a bath in the sink. He loved it.

The Yellow Lab/Husky mix, got bathed in the shower. She loved it.

The 12 year old, blind, Basenji absolutely hates water. All Basenjis hate water. My son and I both got drenched in the process of bathing him. He howls and screams during any bath. (Don't believe the "barkless dog" myth about Basenjis. He may not bark but he can scream like a banshee). Anyway, while he is howling away, I started humming the National Anthem. My son joined in. Soon, Beezley was howling in unison with us, harmonizing to the song. I wish I had a video of this. It was hysterical. Beezley even hit the high notes at the end of the song.

Priceless.

They lowered the water level in the Eris Canal system by about 12 -16 ft in anticipation of the storm water. Going to run some errands this morning and then watch and wait. Doesn't look good...

Stay safe...wilma

Good luck Albert and Bill. Looks like this storm is going to be a direct hit on Jersey.

I picked up a couple of 12V to 120VAC 2000-watt inverters a few weeks ago. Good enough for the fridge, a few lights and computer. Plenty of car batteries around here, not a bad back up.

Stay safe!!

It will be making landfall in Atlantic City, 30 miles due east of where I live sometime between 10PM and midnight with sustained winds of 90 MPH. The wind has picked up quite a bit in the last hour. The rain is keeping steady but now torrential yet.

Man it's getting windy, and the heart of this beast is still 4 or 5 hours from here. We're (Albert and me) about an hour north of Tom. You don't know what this is like until you live it. I can't imagine what it's going to be like tonight, but I guess we;re gonna find out. I just got back from Lowes, and NAPA, and there's already trees down. I have the generator ready to go, lots of gas in cans, and the cars are all full, but thats not much help if the roof of your house is down the street.

Absolutely! And I know you guys have more pressing issues facing you, but when you have time, let us know how you're doing. This sounds like it could be very serious.

We'll be watching the news & weather and praying for your safety.

Landfall is about an hour away in Atlantic City. Still have power here, wind and rain is really cranking now. I've seen some branches come down, no trees yet and I hope it stays that way.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

I'm right in the center of NJ and right now it's blowing pretty hard. Not much rain though (yet). As of yesterday, I was more worried about the rain that was forecast because when Irene hit last year, the whole flood plain behind me came up in my yard and was within less than an inch of flooding a shed with "some" items in there that would not do well underwater. I was very lucky. Yesterday, my wife and I moved a LOT of stuff to another location and I raised many other things off the floor.
One good thing was that this year the town opened the flood gates on the lake to let it drain down ahead of time. Last year the lake was already near full from other rain and it breached the damn due to Irene, and flooded the entire downtown along with 1/2 of my property. Now I'm just a little more worried about the wind because we're surrounded by trees.

Last year:

Hard to imagine what you guys are going through as it is bright, sunny and 53 degrees here, a beautiful day to say the least. Trying to imagine what it is like not that far east of us where things are much different. Everyone be safe and get back to us when you can so we know how you are doing.

Power went out at 5pm. Got the generator running. Its the only wedding gift we have kept after all these years. At the wedding all the ladies laughed because I registered at Home Depot. All the guys understood, though. We bought a generator with the registry money and we have used it for 19 years now!

We had 5 minutes left watching payperview of the Avengers. Dagnabbit!

80 mile gusts here on the Cape. A little worse than a severe winter Nor-Easter, but no real damage on the lower Cape...

Here in the Richmond Virginia area, we dodged the bullet, about 2" of rain and the winds never got over 35 MPH, hope Verne and the rest of the Jersey guys are OK this morning.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

We made it through just fine. The lights flickered several times last night and there were about 5 blue flashes nearby from transformers blowing up but we never lost power or had any flooding. Just a few limbs around the property.
I hope everyone else avoided damage.

We had 4 trees fall. One just missed my 1974 Corvette. Rest of the area is good and my new house which is going up is still standing. So we made out ok.

We had a tree start to go down. Propped itself up against a pine tree. Glad it wasn't headed for the 55 Bel-Air! Don't want to chop the top or channel it!
