WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
I am seriously looking for a restorable 1970 LS5/454 or L78/396 Chevelle convertible. (Don't think there are any unrestored L78's known and for sale though). Color is not as important as original BORN WITH drivetrain and REAL paperwork/history. 4-speed is also pretty important as well as buckets and console. Please reply privately via PM or my email address listed in my profile. All responses will be answered immediately. VERY serious buyer but I do not want junk or fake (tribute) cars. Thanks sYc.

Your so picky.

Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
Still looking. There must be a restorable convert out there somewhere.
|
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
I think anything available has morphed into a "real, fully documented" LS6 convertible by now
|
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
LOL. and that is exactly what I am finding. That or fake LS5 converts.
|
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
not many to choose from from day one, here is one:
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail...ign=AN1112_S145 I thought the non cowl hood L78 got the dual snorkel air cleaner though ... ? |
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
Not all the non cowl SS cars got the dual snorkel air cleaner, you could also get the open element air cleaner as well.
The build sheet will verify what it had though |
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
Thanks for the link Jim. Unfortunately that car is already restored albeit an exceptionally well restored car and a well known car/owner. I am looking for a convert needing restoration though.
|
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
Typically you see the early cars with the open element and the later cars with the dual snorkle.
|
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
I've never seen a factory equipped 1970 L-78 Chevelle with a factory installed (CO) dual snorkle.
As far as I know,it wasn't possible to get a dual snorkle on a 1970 L-78 equipped Chevelle while being assembled. That BB Dual came out later on during 1970,while the L-78 engine, which was only available for roughly the first 90 days of production, had long been discontinued on the Chevelle. Open element (SS) or Cowl Ind.(DG) were it's only possibilities. |
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
Good point Rick. I tend to forget that GM (in their infinite wisdom ) discontinued the L-78 early in the year.
I stand corrected. |

they said 19 L78 convertibles? that leaves 18 others ... hard to imagine one existing with the original drivetrain not known ... I would imagine IF one were to surface the costs associated with a. purchasing it and b. restoring it would exceed whatever this one will bring ... and it is neat that it has no stripes too ... |
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
This is for a private collector and not intended to be flipped so the end cost is not a deciding factor. However, he wants one restored correctly and has asked that we restore one for him as opposed to finding one done. Since I am currently doing an LS6 for him we would like to find another car to do for him. He and I both know that an L78 or LS6 convertible is likely not going to happen so that is why he is open to an LS5 which is almost as hard to locate. Funny thing is, since running this ad many previously unknown LS6 convertibles have been offered to me, none of which are proving to be real. Go figure.

Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
Rick
Thats pretty sad with what is going on in the hobby with all these faked out cars. I blame Chevrolet for not keeping there records. Could you imagine if Chevrolet had Historical records like Pontiac and Ford does. This BS would not exist. With Chevrolet you have to really do your homework or hire a a guy like Rick himself to see if the car is real. Good luck in finding a real deal car for your client. |
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
I have said it many times before so buyers beware, I look at 10-12 LS6 Chevelles for clients around the country every year and on average 10 of them are fake and many new ones crop up every year! It really sucks to spend a clients money only to tell them the car is fake though they see it quite differently as I just saved them a lot of money. Once in awhile it is nice to look at a real car and decide on a value to the buyer can negotiate and purchase the car. Those trips are enjoyable. Now if I could only find the right LS5 convert to go look at........

Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
It is very discouraging to relay the news that their "find" is not what it is supposed to be... however I am happy they haven't purchased some of the crap I have examined.
|
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
Still looking! Will pay finders fee for the right car. Just not interested in an already restored car unless it is an older restoration and priced accordingly.

Sam, no clue. Everyone grumbled it was a fake. I don't know about that, but even a Buick guy can see napa alternator, wrong pulley, rusty rattle canned gas tank.no smog, wrong intake, carb & air cleaner on and on... It would take Rick and 100K + to straighen it out. It did have chalk marks ( sorry for the intrusion Rick). DL |
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
This is so sad: "I look at 10-12 LS6 Chevelles for clients around the country every year and on average 10 of them are fake and many new ones crop up every year!"
I also realize that B-J can't completely authenticate every car, but it STILL bothers me that they are willing to print bogus info on so many cars. It wouldn't take much effort to at least weed out the cars with fake trim tags. Good luck with your search Rick. Your clients are lucky to have you in their corner. |
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
Hello Rick,
Bill Pankiw here from Elk Grove Village, Illinois. I was offered a 1970 LS-5 Coupe, original paint car from Texas last week. It's an original drive train LS-5 Th-400 Dark Gold color, factory a/c , buckets, console, tinted glass, Paper work, 80,000 mile, Arlington built March 1st week car? It has a light Tan interior that is NOT original (Legendary)and a Black original vinyl top & Black stripes. They are asking $55,000 for it & I think $45,000.00 Cash will buy it. I figured, if anyone would know someone interested, you would. It's the wrong color for me. Call me @ 1-847-254-7047 and I will give you the phone # of Dan Hansen the guy who is handling the sale for the widow of the owner Bill Pankiw (Big Block Bill) 1-847-254-7047 www.billsvillagemarathon.com |
Re: WTB 70 LS5 or L78 Chevelle convertible
Sounds like a nice car Bill. I don't currently have any customers looking for coupes but will certainly pass along this information to people. Thanks for the info. I will call later today when I get a chance.

Thanks for all the support guys, but I was posting about a car that I know of... not mine. Nice to know you guys would talk me out of a bad decision. In the future, however, if I ever start talking about buying another car... I need your help talking me out of if!
Good luck with finding the right car Rick. Let me know if I can help any further. |
