69 Chevrolet Goodyear Tires

This is a question for the 69 guys. I have a late 69 built Chevelle in the shop with an August 69 cowl tag build date from the Lakewood Atlanta plant and I'm trying to determine if this car would have had Wide Tread speedway tread tires or the 70 style Polyglas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA
Chris

Chris
I would talk to John @ Kelsey Tire. He can help with the years and usage for Speedway, Wide tread GT, and Polyglass tires.

Mike do you know anyone who can tell me if my spare tire is origina for my 69 chevellel? I know the rim is, I will post pics too, just don't want to hijack the thread to much.

Re: 69 Chevrolet Goodyear Tires

Post up the date code too. Goodyear date codes are known, other brands not so much. And there are allot of Chevelle guys on here that should be able to confirm 69 Chevelle tire usage.

My June built 69 L78 car, Baltimore built, has the original, never on the ground spare. It is a Firestone.

Re: 69 Chevrolet Goodyear Tires

Goodyear and Firestone were both suppliers to all of the plants. If you have an original spare, that will tell you more than I can.

Tell me the build date of the car and I can tell you what kind of Goodyear would be correct. I can also help you get the best price out there for the Goodyears.

Sorry, I reread the first post. I would say that the F70-14 Polyglas RWL No size would be the correct tire. Here is a link to the photo of the tire I am talking about:

Polyglas RWL no size

Tony, which Firestones were used in late 69? Was it the Wide O Oval like the tires used on the 70 Chevelles?

Interesting. I'm putting a 2nd set of SS wheels/raised white letter tires, together for my 69 El Camino, and wasn't sure if or when Wide Ovals were installed at the factory on 69 Chevelles.

I still haven't seen a 69 Chevy with a factory Polyglas tire. I heard somebody spotted a spare in a car but one spare doesn't convince me.

Re: 69 Chevrolet Goodyear Tires

I've also never seen a 69 with a Polyglas tire but as this car was built in August of 69, I was hoping to have somebody with a similar build date that might have an original spare as reference. I know it's a shot in the dark, but I was hopeful. Thanks to all who have responded.

Re: 69 Chevrolet Goodyear Tires

My 08A of 69 Z/28 had a Goodyear Wide Tread GT for the spare. E 70 15. I believe it to be the original spare, but only know the history of the car back to 74.

SmallHurst 08-17-2012 04:24 AM

Re: 69 Chevrolet Goodyear Tires

The Z/28 only had the E70-15 Wide Tread GT and the Firestone Sportscar

I believe that we have discussed this on a separate topics.

The F70-14 Polyglas in RWL was being produced in 68 and was first introduced on the 68 1/2 Cobra Jet Mustang.
We know that the '69 Chevelle wore Wide Treads.
There were no memos showing a cutoff date when the widetreads were not being used and when the Polyglas were being shipped to production lines.
No Widetreads were used in 1970.
Production lines go through model changeover typically the 2-4th week of August.

We only know what we know......

So it is original?

Re: 69 Chevrolet Goodyear Tires

Jay,
Your spare is a 69 style Firestone that is not reproduced. It looks correct right down to the valve stem and cap! The best looking Firestone white letter tire ever in my opinion.
