Yenko Chevrolet records question

lets say around the winter of 1970 Don Yenko sold a guy named Tony Delorenzo a Corvette that was a recovered theft, would there have been a record? and might anyone reading this have those records? yes it did happen and yes the car in question is the third of three Owens-Corning built race cars...thanks in advance!

yes I have, thanks. I am looking for someone with Yenko Chevrolet records who might tell me what the car started life as.

We don't really have any of those records. You might contact Warren Dernoshek. He was a mechanic there and has some files. He might have something or remember the car.

thanks, I found Warren and he has no recollection of the car, I guess it will be the only piece of the puzzle I will never find. here`s the car as painted by GM styling engineer (and Owens-Corning fiberglass racing team member) Randy Wittene racing in Germany 1971-1972

Re: Yenko Chevrolet records question

if this car was raced as in the pic. theres quite a few people to contact about it. Wayne Ellwood runs the Registry of Corvette race cars and has huge amounts of knowledge and resources. Wayne can be reached through facebook real easy. Secondly is Kevin Mackay, hes a world class vette restorer with close ties to such men as Dick Guildstrand and Tony Delorenzo who should be somewhat involved in the history of this car if it was anywhere near the OC racing team. Kevin has ties with some of the most historic vette race cars ever. Dave Heinz's Rebel #57 L-88 and the DX Sunray cars as well as the Leldon Blackwell L-88 vettes....chances are he knows the car.

Wayne can be reached here: [email protected]

Kevin can be reached here: http://corvetterepair.com

P.S. i posted your pic and info with the Registry of Corvette Race Cars. Lets see if the collective group of fellas has any info. Ill update with anything kicked back to me.

thanks but I already have the complete history and ownership trail from Tony Delorenzo to me, if you look the car has been registered at the Corvette race car registry for years. It is the documented third of three Owens-Corning fiberglass racing team built cars. I was just hoping someone might have a record of exactly what Don Yenko sold Tony Delorenzo back in the winter of 1970 when the O-C team built the car.

Re: Yenko Chevrolet records question

If you can get one and haven't yet, would an NICB report perhaps offer anything useful as even if it's as shipped RPO type info you're after, the more in hand the better when seeking new trails to pursue.
Besides original dealer where shipped new info, even though the theft and recovery was waaay back when an NICB report could still include the theft/recovery dates also hopefully more info like where/who/etc?

You didn't mention the year of car but if a '70 model, comparing Vin/build date w/ the theft/recovery dates and a fruitful NICB report may help indicate if the car was perhaps stolen new from Yenko's inventory or something he'd picked up after recovery?
Also if the original delivering dealer was Yenko or other, knowing it may provide other avenues to pursue?

Lastly, what was the orphaned Owens/Corning paint hood only floating around loose a few years back?
Others probably recall it too as we looked at it on a thread here when on eBay or wherever then, pics may exist in the thread if you don't know it and we can find it again?

Best o' luck w/ your quest!

No pics but it had #8 on it, who ran this #?

Yenko ran w/ Tony and the O/C Team a few times right, Daytona maybe more?
Was Don always #11 or other #'s too also was the #11 car he ran the subject car?

unfortunately no, my last race was Sept 2006 at Road America and while "the Glen" in Sept was on my list of tracks to go to I have no plans to ever race it again. the powers that be took all the fun out of it for me and left me with a bad taste in my mouth, the car has been out of the trailer once since 06 but only to drain the fluids and remove the shaft rockers. sad because the thing is an absolute rocket.

I can`t see the ebay posting but it was probably Bud Hickey (or someone who did restoration work for him), at one time he owned both the O-C cars Delorenzo & Thompson drove. Bud Lives in Reno.

Re: Yenko Chevrolet records question

I think one of the O/C cars belongs to John Thompson in California & another to Harry Yeagy in Cincy.

Re: Yenko Chevrolet records question

In the spring of 1954 I went to Chevrolet's "Post Graduate School of Modern Merchandising" in Detroit and met Don Yenko, also attending the school. It was also in slang called "The Dealer's Son School",which, in fact, it really was.He had two tickets for the Indy 500 and we decided to fly there for the race in his Piper PA 14.I suggested we stop by the sports car race at Atterbury AF Base on the way.He agreed it was more interesting than Indy.He attended a couple of races I was in that year, and he was hooked. The rest is history. My dealership,The W.R.Austin Chevrolet Co. in Norwalk,Ct sold a few of his various conversions, along with some of John Fitch's Corvair conversions.
I do not intend to mock the Chevrolet "Post Graduate School of Modern Merchandising". It was the best six weeks of learning I ever spent.

Welcome aboard Mr. Austin. Interesting information. It sounds like you may have unearthed a racing bug in the young Yenko!

WoW and welcome here!
Being a Yenko network dealer, W.R. Austin delivered cars are part of the discussions here every so often.
Thanks for sharing your story, please tell us more!
Gotta ask, has any W.R. Austin paperwork from the glory years survived?

I am new to the list but not new to enjoying and being involved with Yenko legend and old Corvettes and Corvette race cars. I have a few old photos of the OC cars as well as of Yenko racing what I believe is a 57 Corvette somewhere in the midwest.

I am also interested in Yenko delivery history, i.e., did he sell and prepare cars for customers to race? What if a customer bought a car and then ask the Yenko group to race prepare it, would the Yenko garage do that?

Re: Yenko Chevrolet records question

A friend just past info from y.net on the 61 low mileage fi car that will be at Carlisle this month. This is a great little car and reminds me of a car in Southern Illinois that is mush the same in mileage and history, except it is an original fuel injection which history says was returned to the dealer by the original owner to have the fi removed and 2 -4's put on the car! The car has 100% of the original fuel traits and 100% of the documentation, except the piece that would support the fi swap out. This is such a sweet, low mileage, original car!

RE W.R. Austin Chevrolet records.Sorry,no records from that interesting era.In fact when I closed out the dealership,I had all records put on two large tapes with what was then a very advanced computer. Not long after there was not a computer that could access the information. A Don Yenko story.Don't recall what year it was,but many years back.Don was thrilled to be asked to be on a Corvette team at Sebring. After agreeing to be on the Corvette team,he was then asked to be on the Ferrari team. With some red face he begged off the Corvette team and signed on with Ferrari. Two weeks before the race he had a fall from his motorcycle and broke a leg.Story as he told it.The Novas created by Yenko were registered as very every day cars and the insurance rate was the "Little Old Lady' cost variety.

I have been working late nights trying to complete my next book.....The Yenko Era....Continued. Canonsburg and Beyond. I have discovered in my documents Donna Mae's original drawing of the red, white & blue Yenko badge wirh letters to suppliers for price quotes. Also history of " Yenko Tuned " decals. Lots of stuff like that in the book.
