69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
I have, what I think is the real deal (1969 DZ 302 Engine). I would just like some input on this to make sure it is a DZ 302.
Here's some numbers I have found.....Thanks for any help. Front pad....... V0107DZ 1576024 Oil Filter....... 371 388 88N Back of block........3956618 Heads........3927186 Couple pics.......... http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...1/100_0637.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...1/DSCN2226.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...1/100_0646.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...1/DSCN2223.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...1/DSCN2226.jpg |
Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
DZ is nothing but a suffix code. At least the block started life as a 302 it looks like. All those 4 bolt blocks could be in many applications. Have to see if the crank says 1178 on it. Its casted on the first throw up by the balancer. That is a Z/28 crankshaft. Rest of the stuff looks pretty good from here. DZ code looks like January 7th of 69.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
If stampings are original and pad location correct for Vin, isn't there some digits missing between the 1 and 5?
9N if Norwood car? VIN 124379N576024 ? ~ Pete |
Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
I checked the numbers on the crank and it is a 1178 and main caps are 2482.
|
Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
Main caps would be the same for a 350....I think? The crank being an 1178 is a 3" stroke so you are good. Like I said DZ is a suffix code for a Z/28. Block is nothing special compared to other 4 bolt blocks.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
You need to provide a good sharp image of the pad with the stampings. Use the Macro setting on your camera (Flower symbol).
Then we can see if it is a "real" DZ-block. Jan |

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
i believe that 1 is an L or van nuys car. stamp looks good to me, but i am no expert.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
just checked with a friend who has an 01B norwood z-28. his vin is 9n575XXX and his vin is by the oil filter. i dont think that after they changed the location, they would go back to the pad.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
A different plant might have done things differently.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
The stamping is original.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
Cool and great you have comparables!
Specifically are we looking at gang stamping 19N576024 - a flatfooted 1 for Chevrolet faintly showing to the far left but not originally mentioned above? - the 9 missing at this level of scrutiny also perhaps a shorter length gang member? - the tail end of the N showing before the 5 that looks like a 1? The Van Nuys plant changed the Vin location a few times during the year and that location was typical for that plant during that time period. |
Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
i think we have determined that this is a norwood stamping. a january built van nuys car would have a much lower vin.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
My 01B LA built Z28 has a Jan. 3rd assembled motor, vin by the oil filter, L517XXX vin. Both Camaro plants used the oil filter and front pad location for vin stamps during the Dec. '68 - Feb./Mar. '69 period. Either vin location can be original.
This 302 motor is a Norwood vin'd motor based on the vin #. Mark |

If you lighten the picture you can see it looks like L526024 which makes sense that the VIN stamping from VN would be up on the deck. The first "2" looks like a larger font which VN has been known to do.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
The vin stamp is so messed up it must be an LA stamp! There are so many strange vin stamps from the LA plant, large 6's, 2's, etc. There are original Norwood vin stamps on the front pad into mid Jan. '69 so it is not only an LA plant occurrence.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
Thanks for every one's help, so I'm assuming that it is a Dz 302.

Re: 69 DZ 302 Engine ID.........
Is it confirmed if it's an L or N yet?
