1970 LS6

1 Attachment(s)
Well, I finally bought a 1970 Chevelle SS last July. I bought the car as a roller with no motor or tranny, because I thought I knew some history of the car. Within a month I tracked down the original motor and had all owner history of the car. The car was actually located a block behind me growing up. The motor had made itself from Nebraska to Maine. And finally after 9 months of negotiations the motor now resides in my garage waiting for a rebuild. Here are a few pics.

Can someone help post some pics? This is the only picture it let me download. This is the car in 1972, a block behind me growing up.

Hey Steve, seen the photo already but love seeing it again. I would post some photos for you but am headed to Mecum. There are several people on board here that will post them for you. Hope to see the car soon.
Rick

Is this an original LS6 car? How did you manage to track down the motor so far away? Congrats on the car.

I very recently acquired a 1970 Chevelle as well. True Chevelle, big block, disc brake car. 100% original sheetmetal with just the nose missing. Car has lived its entire life in the high desert of Washington state and therefore has never seen any rust.

I am going to try and determine what motor was originally in the car - whether it be a 396, 454 LS5 or (highly doubt) 454 LS6.

I've read your story on TC before. What great past owner history.

Yes, very true. I need to get time to try and look for a build sheet. I doubt there is one still there.

Without a build sheet - any other hints to look for to determine original motor?

Re: 1970 LS6

the rear end code will tell you if it is a 454 car

If your trying o find out if it's a real LS6 does it have an M22 trans? What's the cowl tag and the rear end codes? I would go to Team Chevelles Forum and try and get these decoded in the tag forum.

Re: 1970 LS6

I wonder why someone would go from Cranberry Red to Black Cherry for a paint change so early in it's history?
Looks like it has the Malibu Front Silver grill and i guess someone added the Trim Rocker molding on the bottom.

Nice solid car though and i hope you restore it back to original Cranberry Red/Gauges/4 Speed Bench and no stripes.
Will look very nice to look like that vintage photo. .

Re: 1970 LS6

My Chevelle does have a 12 bolt in it - I have not gotten to checking the codes on the rear or the trim tag.

What engine options was the 12 bolt available in?

ne70ss 05-18-2012 02:16 AM

Re: 1970 LS6

One of the previous owners remembered the engine being in the camaro when it was sold by a friend of his to a guy in Nj. There is a post in pit racing about the camaro, it was originally raced as Macs Chevrolet then as the RD Shaker. The car was changed from cranberry red to Cadillac brown in 1973, then changed again to another shade of brown with the stripes in 1981.

Re: 1970 LS6

Almost forgot, when I finally contacted Rich who owns the camaro, he said he sold the engine on eBay back in 2004. Rich luckily for me still had the shipping invoice. That led me to Maine and finally getting the motor back.

Re: 1970 LS6

Oops, thought that was Black Cherry but it is Brown.
From Cranberry Red to Brown?
Makes you wonder even more why the previous owner would do a color change like that
Will look a lot better back to Red IMO
I wonder if it came with the Open Air element or Dual Snorkel closed Air filter system, the only way of knowing would be a build sheet.
