12 bolt axles
I want to replace the stock axles in my 69 Camaro. I want to street/strip the car, but don't want to lose the original 12 bolt. The internals of the rear end have been replaced except for the stock axles. I looked at Superior, Strange, Currie, and Mark Williams. Everything I read said to stay away from Moser. Does anyone have any success stories for replacement axles?

Re: 12 bolt axles
I run Moser axles in my 67 Nova SS with a 4-speed and have no issues. I do not run at the track or have slicks so that may be different situation.

Re: 12 bolt axles
I've been running the Moser's in my 68 for about 10 years. I'm running a 327 W/4000 stall,4:10 rear, Wide-treads or slicks...no issues.I went thru a hand full of rears prior to this combo, I got away from Richmond gears and GM axles and all is well.

Re: 12 bolt axles
I put Superior axles + Eaton carrier in our Camaro probably 5-6 years or more ago...

Re: 12 bolt axles
Running Mosers for 10+ years, with and with out slicks. Some axles are to hard for street use but Mosers are good.

Re: 12 bolt axles
Mosers in my 69 COPO, for around 6 years. Running as good as 11.50's with polyglas. No issues

Re: 12 bolt axles
If you placed all of them on a bench and you could examine them all in detail, the decision would be incredibly easy.
Absolutely the very nicest pieces you will get are from Mark Williams. Every axle is built for the application and if you specify axles for street use, M-W will accommodate you with a specific axle build. Simply the finest axles available today and well worth the small premium M-W charges. I would not use anything else. Wayne |
Re: 12 bolt axles
I called and spoke to every axle company I could. Strange said they wouldn't run their c-clip axles in anything with potential of running mid 11's. Currie and Mark Williams do not make c-clip axles, but they both reccomended that I go to Tom's Axles. I spoke with Tom's Axles and was pleased with what I heard in my conversation. I ordered a set through them.

As you all probably know, there is a lot of difference in shock loading on an axle depending upon whether you have an automatic transmission or a clutch car. With an 11.50 automatic car you could darned near get away with factory axles, at least for a short time. |
Re: 12 bolt axles
Turbo, you said you didn't want to "lose" the original 12 bolt, correct? So are you getting another rear for the car? IF you are, I would just get a 9" or Dana. BUT if your stuck on a 12 bolt, there are plenty of makers to use. BUT make sure you tell them it for a STREETCAR that will see SOME strip time.
In my '69 Nova, I've been running the stock 12 and axles for a while. Bet you I have 150 hits on them as we speak. BUT mine is a 550Hp, M21/'glide with brake deal that ALWAYS has 9" slick on the car. With the 4 speed, I put the front wheels about 26" in the air. Car run 10.40's N/a and there is some spray, but never off the line. Just some food for thought. |
Re: 12 bolt axles
Thanks! That is what I explained mostly a street car, but some strip time. I would like to change the rear end maybe next year, but don't trust the stock axles until I get to that point.

Re: 12 bolt axles
I don't see any reason to switch from a 12 bolt to a 9" or a Dana. They are plenty strong for a street/strip car if it's built right.
For example, I have a friend with a 1970 Chevelle (all steel but the hood)with a BBC 427, T-400 and a 12 bolt. He has Strange axles, stock Eaton carrier, running mid ten's with a about 125 shot of the funny stuff. I also know a few people running Moser axles and am wondering where you did your research to come to the conclusion that they aren't a good axle? Kurt |
Re: 12 bolt axles
I just did some reasch on-line, talking to people, etc. That's all.
