What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
I have a 1969 Chevelle ss396 that needs total restoration & I'm curios what it could be worth. It's Monoco Orange w/black vinyl top. Black bucket seats & console automatic. Manual steering & 3:55 posi. I have the "born with" engine from the intake to the pan with distributor. The rear end is the original except it has 4:45 posi now. Original th400 is gone & have a th400 from another ss396 but it was 325hp. The car has original paint & has never been wrecked. It has 71,000 miles one the odometer. The car was raced in the mid to late 70s. There is rust in below the windshield & below the back window. Both front fenders have the usual problems & a spot in the LR quarter. No rust in the floor or trunk & with the small problems in the fenders, I wouldn't think anybody would replace panels. Any thoughts? Thanks, Joe

Do you have any pics? Then it will be easier to make an estimate on WIW.

OK. Go to Photobucket.

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
There was a Fathom Green on Green 1969 L78 Chevelle 4-speed survivor at MCACN that had one repaint, but was otherwise incredibly well preserved, original and in running order - and it could be bought for $30k at the time.
This one has original Monaco Orange paint (which I think is awesome, even with the rust) but it would need quite a few dollars to get it on the road. Personally, I would put a new vinyl top and interior in it and do a mechanical rebuild... and enjoy it!! Call me if you decide to part with it.... somebody stop me. |
Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
If I remember right Monaco Orange was a SS only color in 69?
Joe, bad idea to post your password, you should change it asap. Here's the photos. I'd say between 16-20k current market? http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle055.jpg http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle056.jpg http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle053.jpg http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle052.jpg http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle051.jpg http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle050.jpg http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle049.jpg http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle048.jpg http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle047.jpg http://mob1164.photobucket.com/album...hevelle046.jpg Rich Pern |

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
Yes you are right that paint code 72 in 69 means factory ss. btw we don't even need your password to acces your photos, just the username. And Rich, I think you are way off with your estimate.

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
I'm new at the photobucket thing. I probably won't use it after this.
It's changed. Thanks for the help & guidance Thanks, Joe |
Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
Could be..... Not a chevelle guy , I guess the big positive for this car is the color and the original motor.
I see that Charley's # match "running" L78 Nova is still available for 19k, so I guess it might be high in today's market. L78's just are not bringing what they were. Rich Pern |
Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
----Considering the resto might cost around $50,000 its easy to see why the value in its present state might only be in the mid to high teens......Bill S

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
I know this is a 70 SS 396 350 but it sold for 15'000 last year.

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
Though I've posted this before.... It might help shed a little light.... though not a 375HP car..... I paid $12,500 for this last December. Its a #'s matching 325HP car... I added the wheels/tires, steering wheel and the vinyl top.
BTW - I drove it home 350 miles with no problems. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...hevelle248.jpg http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...hevelle242.jpg |
Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
Wow! $12.5K......plus it's a SS396 300 Deluxe Coupe, is it a real Garnet Red car?

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
It was originally brown with a champagne painted roof..
Its a decent solid rust free car with 106k original miles.. |

And the that bought from the original owner said he was "going to restore it" |
Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
That seems like a great buy on a cool muscle car. However I don't believe that comparing a solid lifter 375hp to a hydraulic lifter lower performance car is a fair comparable.

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
Very true... But I didn't see any other comps (except a '70) being posted so I was just hoping that the OP could use this real world experience on a '69 SS396 that has traded hands in recent months. I figure a 375HP version adds roughly 40% to the value IMO.

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
It will add a certain percentage having a 375 horse Chevelle but the conditions of the two cars being compared are at nearly opposite ends of the spectrum. You are comparing the base 396 car which is fully driveable to a 375 horse car needing a lot of work just to get it road worthy let alone visually appealing. I like the 375 horse car but there are many, many parts (quite a few $pecific to the L78) to be collected, repairs to body to be made, shipping the car home, finding a correct and rare transmission, entirely new interior, paint, glass, trim etc. Lack of documentation and owner history do not help. Current market is way down vs. pre-'08 and after restoration even if you did alot of the work yourself, you will be upside down. IMHO, market for this car is $8 to 10K. This car will have to be a labor of love with plans to hang on to it for the long haul.

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
I wanted to thank everybody for their comments. I've been contacted by several that would like to own the car. I've decided to let it go. If the new owner cares to disclose himself, that will be up to him. As for the price...let's just say we came to an agreement. Thanks again, Joe

Thanks Joe, you've been a pleasure to deal with! I happen to already have most of the interior pieces to tidy it up, and I'm going to return it to its original glory in a day-two style, saving the original patina! I think this car will look killer with slotted Ansen wheels up front (thanks Mike), vintage M/T pie crust drag slicks on steelies in back, Lakewood ladder bars (thanks Brent), tow tabs up front (thanks Zach), etc. This site has been a tremendous resource for me and I appreciate all the contacts I've made. Anyone got an old set of Cyclone headers (to match the decal on the underside of the hood)? |

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
I'm curious too. I shot a guy a price on my 69 L78 Chevelle today and was told I was too high. When this one is all done, I'd bet the cost involved will shock some guys.

Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
Comparing cars with docs with ones that don't, is something we should avoid doing, and get that out of the way first.
The green L78 survivor mentioned in this thread for $30K is a 4spd and has docs (from what I remember from the MCACN show I saw it at). Thats a tough benchmark price to compare to these days. I think helmut should have gotten a very good price on this orange auto if my guess is right. Maybe he will be lucky and find a build sheet that could change everything. |
Re: What it worth? 1969 Chevelle ss396 375hp
I'm hoping Helmut will find something in the car to help his investment. Regretably the owner since 1976 has passed away at the early age of 52. His wife knew nothing of this car or the other 50 he had collected over the years. The car had also been raced so it's a good chance that if he had anything, he could've pitched POP or whatever. It's odd that he had the sence to remove the original engine as to not distroy it. The car has never been taken apart body wise so I still have high hopes for Helmut...Joe

I hope he finds something in it too. I know of a 69 copo chevelle that just recently had paperwork found in it, that the previous owner never even looked for. So maybe its there. |

With all the oil money in Calgary, there seems to be a lot of hipo stuff heading west. L78 Camaro and L78 Chevelle. Nice pair.

Will the car be ready for the Calgary spring thaw at Deerfoot mall, April 29?? I should be there, weather permitting. Hope to see this car, if you can get it together in such a short time. Good Luck |
