Neat piece.
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Hey Sam..I think someone would want it even if they didnt own a car.!
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Agreed. It IS a piece of art and probably a hoot to shift!!!
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Awesome
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
That is the same shifter I have in my 65. I think it is the BEST version of the Vertigate shifters made by either Hurst or Mr. Gasket.
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
I remember I had one of these in a 67 chevelle around 1973..I pulled back on second soo hard I broke it right off the tail housing.!!
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Nice..
And the shifter boot??? If anybody has a boot for this shifter 4trade/sale contact me. |
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
I dont believe the boot came with the package??
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Out of all the vertigates, its the easiest to use on the street. The trigger is much easier to pull up. The later Vertigate's trigger mechanism is way further down the handle. I always feel like I am gonig to break my fingers trying to pull up on the later triggers. Nice piece Mike!

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
X2.
That's not the only reason the Ram Rod is better. I've never saw or heard of a Ram Rod shifter getting jambed up between gears. Lots of stories about it happening to V-gates though. Very nice piece. |
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
You might as well be looking for a needle in a hay stack.

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
I think I would use a nos super boot and poke a hole for the reverse if I had to.
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
LOL...that's exactly what I did in my Chevelle. I'll have to get over to the car and get a picture of it.
I fabbed a bezel out of .065 aluminum to go around the hole I cut. Had to cut into the side of the stainless plate though. And would'nt you know, but 5 to 6 months later I found and bought two nos Ram Rod boots. Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
I believe if you wanted to sell your second boot someone who buys my shifter would love that.!
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
The history of these "straight-line" shifters is interesting. Mr. Gaskest, who loved to challenge Hurt's dominance in the shifter market, actually introduced their version first and it even won "Best New Product" at the SEMA show that year. About six months later, Hurst released their version of the straight-line shifter. Eventually, Mr. Gasket even purchased Hurst.

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete

I almost forgot to add the picture of my Ram Rod shifter with the modified Super Boot.

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
I like it.!! Is the reverse stick chromed or is it a reflection?
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete

It's chrome. When I restore these shifters I always chrome the reverse lever.

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Very nice job.

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
The E-bay add says it fits all Muncie 4-speeds, the levers in the pictures will only fit 1968 and older Muncies with studded shift shafts, and 2nd design ST-10's...
Hope this helps... Crash |
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
I've used those shift levers on later model transmissions. The only difference is the later ones have an area in the middle that is a larger hole for the bolt to go through.
You can use a carbide cutter to do this or mill them. I would be willing to do this for a nos shifter. |
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Also the studded levers the slot is .600" long, and the bolt style the slot is .750" long... So the average guy without a machine shop can only use this shifter on a 1968 and older Muncie, or a ST-10... Crash
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Couldnt you bring them to a machine shop to have the holes made larger in the center?..or just get three other arms to use on either transmissions and keep the same shifter...If the winner of the shifter is that fussy Im sure I have the correct arms for 69 later that I'll include from other Ramrod shifters I have.Like you say Hemicolt..where you gonna find a NOS Ramrod ??
|
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Your add say this shifter "Fits all Muncies", which it does not...
If some one wanted to buy this shifter and had a 1969 and later Muncie, and they try to bolt it up and it doesn't... I can't tell how many calls I get from people who buy shifters on E-bay and there misrepresented as to what they fit... Hope this helps... Crash |

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
If your buyer fusses and doesn't have a machine shop in there city or has never used a die grinder..lol...
I have several sets of the shift levers for the other style. Maybe post you have that covered and you won't have a problem. I sometimes take it for granted that everyone doesn't have these types of tools..lol <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: MR-427</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Couldnt you bring them to a machine shop to have the holes made larger in the center?..or just get three other arms to use on either transmissions and keep the same shifter...If the winner of the shifter is that fussy Im sure I have the correct arms for 69 later that I'll include from other Ramrod shifters I have.Like you say Hemicolt..where you gonna find a NOS Ramrod ?? </div></div> |
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Very hard to find. Super Boots with the red "H", are a dime a dozen compared to the Ram Rod boot. Nice score.

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Muncies have been taken apart and put back together with so many different parts over the years. Many of the 1969 and later Muncies I have purchased come with 3/8"-24 studs and a 685 side cover. Unless you have a 100% correct with all original parts transmission (which anyone hardly ever does) then it doesn't matter. All you have to look at on your Muncie is what style of shift cam attachment you have and you're in business.

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Well All I can say is I have three other Ram rod shifters here and if the new owner needs another type of lever to mount it to the side cover on a 1969 and newer I have them free of charge ( whatever will get it done),

Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
The lucky individual that ends up with this shifter doesn't need it if he can't figure out how to make it work on his transmission... If he is buying a shifter that requires modification to the trans tunnel in the first place he should be able to figure out the rest of the issues... If he can't cut the hole in the floor and make the cuts needed on certain transmissions he/she probably can't shift the thing either.... I would be all over this shifter if I wasn't involved in another project right now and I would hack whatever needed to be hacked to get it in the car... My 68 has some super shifter rods and some comp plus rods while using a supershifter mechanism on a comp plus mount with a comp plus handle....
I was thinking super shifter when I mentioned tunnel modification. My old super shifter sat high and I had to cut quite a bit for fitment. I can't remember how much the vertical gates require but i'll stick with my story that if your running this shifter you probably know the meaning of "improvise" Tommy |
Re: Super rare Hurst Ram 4 Shifter NOS complete
Tommy..I cant believe the guy that buys this would be the kind of guy to drop it off at his mechanics place to have it installed..If He's that lame he probibly wouldnt make it out of the driveway..the guy who wants to own this is either a true hotrodder or serious vintage parts collector. And be willing to cut a huge hole in the floor.!!

There you go, problem solved. Just ask your buyer which ones he needs at checkout.
Here are the two boots I have. The one on the left is nos and the one on the right is used. That's the one I will cut down for the Vega. |
