1970 Black Challengers
Are the number or percentage of Black Challengers known or published? Thanks for any info, Ed
|
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
I have them. What model is it?
Black tends to be MOR or rarer for muscle and pony cars. |

Re: 1970 Black Challengers
The lovley photo that showed up prompts me to ask......
How many of the '70 RT/SE Hemi Coupes were triple black (if known by that breakdown)? One for sure - but are there more than that? |

Re: 1970 Black Challengers
wow, black on the 70 challenger was not that rare actually.
I thought there would be less. never saw the counts like the last post, cool. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Did the convertible come out of San Diego?

My car is a 1970 A66 Challenger. Thanks, Ed

1.2% of US-spec base Challenger hardtops were black. That's roughly around 457 cars. Please keep in mind this doesn't include Canadian and export cars. Likewise, you cannot figure out how many of those were 340 cars, or how many were built with black interior - all options have to be taken individually. Anyone combining options, except in rare cases, are using the statistics incorrectly. For example, sometimes you see FM3 Challenger T/As being 1 of 28, but you cannot combine the option of the color with the option of the T/A package; in fact, the T/A registry has more than 28 cars on file - substantially more! EDIT: Those numbers posted above are for R/Ts, not the base Challenger which is what the 340 is based on. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Thank you very much! Ed
|
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Numbers i posted above are R/T only for the Hard Top, Drop Top and S.E.
The Regular Challengers are not accounted for in those numbers. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
It's an important distinction because Ed's car doesn't fall within those numbers - just wanted to be clear for all reading this.
|
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
A friend of a friend has/had a black on black T/A Challenger.
|
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
T/As would be a part of the base Challenger list too.
|
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Diego, based on your research, what do think is the rarest color on a 70 Challenger? Not necessarily odd color combos, but just general body color? Also, what special order colors have you run across on 70 Hemi or 440 Six Pack Challengers?
|
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Well, someone posted the R/T numbers above so you can see there. Or do you mean base Challengers?
For what it's worth, I haven't done any research - I just have some numbers from Galen Govier. But, as a rule, the yellow-golds, golds, beiges, and mid-year Panther Pink and Green Go tend to be the rarest colors for Mopar muscle in 1970. As far as special-order colors are concerned, I know there's at least one, and perhaps a few, A4 silver Challengers built, which wasn't a normal color option for the Challenger but was for the C-body. If there's another special-order color, I don't know about it or I don't remember it. |

Is that the car you have in mind? |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Don't remember. I've seen one in Carlisle.

Sorry John, just a photo i got from the internet a few years back. i have no idea where the car is from.

The convertible photo was taken at MCACN last year in the lobby of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. I know, because I parked the car there for the owner and that shot must have been taken right after I parked it, as there is no red drape/stanchion around it and the tires weren't yet detailed! Note the big "RCC" which is Rosemont Convention Center. BTW; neat post and great info, Diego! Bashton MCACN Managing Member |

Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Looking at your numbers, we had a hemi orange rt/se 440,4sp and was told that it was 1 of 142? Your number leads me to believe there were more rt/se's than straight up rt's?

Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Here's the numbers XXX posted for EV2:
Hemi Orange EV2 984 43 195 That means 195 US-spec R/T SEs were built. I don't know where you got the idea that there were fewer regular R/Ts built. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
When i posted the numbers i listed them by color then model in this order.
JS23 JS27 JS29 JS23 = Hardtop R/T JS27 = Convertible R/T JS29 = S.E. Special Edition R/T. So this would be how you read those numbers. 442w30 is correct that these numbers are all based on USA production R/T models, the imports will ad some production to these numbers but not much. Color + Models JS23 JS27 JS29 Light Blue EB3 178 13 45 Bright Blue EB5 1134 70 281 Dark Blue EB7 396 27 94 Plum Crazy FC7 3034 222 599 Medium Red FE5 902 122 202 Light Green FF4 560 27 198 Dark Green EF8 929 57 281 Sublime FJ5 916 44 206 GO Mango EK2 970 43 281 Dk Burnt Orange FK5 1066 82 554 Biege BL1 41 0 30 Dark Tan FT6 219 27 101 Hemi Orange EV2 984 43 195 White EW1 301 39 112 Black TX9 506 32 183 Top Banana FY1 1039 84 239 Cream DY3 96 6 60 Light Gold FY4 191 15 79 Green-Go FJ6 14 2 0 Panther Pink FM3 41 4 7 Two Tone Paint VO2 123 0 0 |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
I might as well also say that for the immense popularity of B5 blue, B3 and B7 tend to be a lot rarer, especially the former.
|
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Thanks for the clarification on those numbers. I wasn't quite sure how those columns broke down, and now I see it. And I love the B7 color!
What are some of the two-tone paint scheme combos on the R/T? Did they use a "suggested color combo", or could the buyer choose any combo they wanted? Could someone order Plum Crazy and Top Banana two-tone? Also curious if they used the same trim divider to separate the two-tone paint scheme as they did with the vinyl top. |

These are the recommended ones, but you could have any combo you wanted. Those cars usually had a V08 "Paint, Trim & Vinyl Roof Edit Waiver" on the data plate. The below car doesn't have that code. http://i48.servimg.com/u/f48/12/18/65/27/dy3__f10.jpg |

Note the wheelcovers on that one!
I saw it at Carlisle too! |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
I had a triple black 70 Hemi Challenger R/T (not an RT/SE) that I bought from the original owner in 1980. It was sold new at Grand-Spaulding Dodge. When I restored it, I left off the vinyl roof. Kept it until 1995. Last I knew of, it was in Bethesda MD in 1997.
