Re: How bout a few Vintage aircraft photos?

MORE are coming...
It is quite a process to get these into digital format as they are large format 3x5 high quality negs. (My great grandfather owned a Newspaper, then was a sports editor for the Charlotte Observer and edited the NC truck owners magazine so the equipment was at hand)
I set up a high intensity light behind the negs and use a long focal length 8 megapixel camera to get the neg into digital, then invert the image and white balance in photoshop.

I am communicating with Getty Images about hosting the collection.

My grandfather was an engineer (designed and built papermills) so I have all kinds of photos of construction of Hotels in downtown Charlotte, radio towers, etc...

I have a bunch of good airplane photos too. Here's the one and only Convair XC-99 transport at its home base of Kelley AFB in about 1950. My dad was a young enlisted man when the XC-99 first arrived at Kelley and said that when it landed, with its original single wheel main landing gear, that it broke through the asphalt as it taxied in. It was updated with multi-wheel mains soon after. It remained at Kelley after its 1955 retirement but has been moved to Dayton for restoration and eventual display at the USAF Museum. The XC-99 is a derivative of the B-36 bomber.

Just beyond the XC-99 is a Boeing YC-97 (early short B-29 style tail and R-3350 engines) and two B-29s.

Colonel George Laven's colorful F-100A at George AFB in 1957. Laven was the commander of the 479th Tac Fighter Wing and a WWII ace and commander's jets were often colorfully marked as seen here. The unit converted to the F-104 in 1959 and Laven's 104 was delivered in similar commander's colors and whitewall-painted tires! Contrails high above the base mean fighter-interceptors or perhaps test planes from nearby Edwards AFB at work. Only military planes were 'up in the cons' in those days since jets were not quite in airline service yet.

A George-based 327th FIS F-102 is at left and a B-47 bomber at right.

Not an airplane photo but an airport. This is Orchard Place Army Airfield soon after the end of WWII. Upgraded and renamed O'Hare Airport after famed U.S. Navy WWII ace "Butch" O'Hare, it bears little resemblance to its humble beginnings. If you look carefully at O'Hare on Google Earth you can still make out the triangular runway pattern on the north side of the main terminal. View here looks southwest.

FYI there is a long running Aircraft Pic's thread already in the lounge. It is @ 63 pages.

But either way there are allot of us old aviation types here that love that stuff..

I love the Sabre... there is one in the park here in Greenville, I remember it from when I was a child, I always wanted to get in it and FLY! I was so fascinated. Never got a pilot's license, however my pilot for a few charters used to let me take the stick in a prop plane... the freedom is addictive... I don't think you could get me out of a JET!

Re: How bout a few Vintage aircraft photos?

Okay, you asked for it!

As WWII progressed and new variants of combat airplanes made it into service, a few of the older fighter variants were sometimes kept around for use as proficiency trainers, hacks for running errands, and some were converted into two-seaters for giving morale-boosting rides to ground crew and visiting dignitaries. This is a North American P-51B/C Mustang with the early high-backed fuselage, kept on-hand at its base in England when the new D-models with the 'bubble' canopies arrived, one of which can be seen at right. The mechanics have spruced it up in their spare time and proudly pose for the cameraman. The WW on the tail stands for "War Weary." Not necessarily worn-out in this specific case but none the less replaced by the new D-models. It also has the upgraded British "Malcom hood" blown plexiglass canopy for improved visibility. 1944.

Beautiful photo of two 29th Bomb Group Boeing B-29 Superfortresses either headed to, or returning from, a mission over Japan in early 1945.

Early 1960s shot of the USAF Thunderbirds jet demonstration team assembled on the ramp at their home base, Nellis AFB near Las Vegas. They flew the North American F-100C Super Sabre at the time. A single Lockheed T-33 trainer is at center between two Fairchild C-123 Provider transports.

Delta Convair 880 airliner being "held down" by its pilot during takeoff. Probably no passengers on this flight--you don't horse-around like this with passengers. Black smoke is from water injection for added thrust on takeoff, hence the nickname, "water wagons." c1963.

Wow! Awesome photos.

I was in my 20's when my dad passed away and we donated literally thousands of original photos, newspapers, manuals, airplane parts, models, etc, etc to some of his so called 'friends' who later sold everything off for a profit. Some of them kept them but most sold them off which was truly unfortunate as this was an incredible collection that should have been kept together. Two of my dads original paintings went to the Minnesota Air National Guard Museum in St. Paul. I tried desperately to get them back or have prints made but they would not let me. I will try and find my photos of his paintings and post them. I still have one of a squadron of B17's taxing for take off but I want the flight of ANG P51's and F-102 Delta Daggers that he painted.

These are wonderfull shots of the WW II stuff, thank you and more please.
An FYI that some may not have noticed or are not aware of, go back and check out all the metal "Landing Mat" used for Taxiways, parking and runways. I made a landing on a wet landing mat runway @ NKP Thailand in 68 when I was on a flight crew of a 4 engine Connie C121J, very interesting and a bit noisey too.

My parents gave (with the stipulation of receiving prints, which never happened) a large quantity of 5 x 8 glass Negatives from the late 1800's early 1900's which were of the Greenville South Carolina area to the historical society in the late 70's.
Unfortunately promises are only as good as the agreement signed by an authorized representative of the corporate body with whom you are dealing.
