Learning About W-30 Cars

11/24/2011
Hello, Supercar Registry Folks:
Looking for a good book to read to learn about Olds 442's and W-30 442's. Would like something with lots of information (e.g. decoding tags to authenticate 442 cars, casting numbers for blocks, manifolds, production numbers, etc.) that also has good photos of cars. Are there Olds 442 clubs in Illinois?
Any suggestions? Thanks,

Fred Gustat

Re: Learning About W-30 Cars

Lots of top notch Olds guys in Illinois, Elliott Jaffe, Stefano Bimbi of Nickey Chicago with some nice recent additions to his collection, Ed Van drel and Bob Cline come to mind. stay away from sites like RealOldspower as it is a cesspool of critics and back stabbers. Join The OldsClub of America and contact Greg Rollins of Supercars Unlimited in Portland Oregon for his booklet 442 by the Numbers.
As always you will find Everybody on Yenko.net helpful regardless of what car they have in their garage. Look up Quad State Olds on the OCA site for more info.

Thanksgiving Night 2011

Thanks, Paul for getting me started! I saw W-30's at MCACN this past weekend and I saw Stefano's car. Beautiful. I even had a conversation with Gary from Level One in Colorado. He was at the show with a guy whose W-30 he restored. What a car! Thanks for the advice.

Forgot to give an honorary mention to Lee Pearl, that's his Gold 70 W30 you saw. Lee knows a lot about the W30 cars.

Beautiful car Lee.

I've come across many other unusual color combos over the years, one of the rarest is a Bamboo Cream 70 W-30, and there was a nice red one, with gold stripes. Great if you're a San Francisco 49ers fan.

This is a special order Aegean Aqua 70 W-30 4-speed on E-Bay right now. I'm not sure this color is as rare as the seller thinks it is (he claims it may be a 1 of 1) as I've seen a few others.

If you go to Jim's web site you can see almost every color combination in his photo section. My car has not made his site yet but there are a couple hardtops gold with black. Paul's green car is shown. Look in the w-30 and w-30 picture sections. http://www.wmachineregistry.com/

Ugh. Be careful with that book - it's not the last word on Oldsmobiles.

Here's a special-ordered color combo….

downunder1, Lee, StealthBird, and 442w30:

You guys have some great looking W-30's. I won't rely absolutely on the book. I'm not worried about stepping in it as long as you guys are out there for greenhorns like me. I didn't pay much attention to 442's until recently. The 455 and the torque is develops and the styling are very cool. It looks like it will be between an old GTO (like a '66 Tri-Power convertible) and a W-30 convertible when and if I ever get out of my condo rut.

Yes he is overstating the rarity. I've seen several including an automatic convertible and my 4speed convertible with docs. Of course I can't attest to the authenticity of most I've seen. Hardest muscle car to prove.

LeeP 12-01-2011 03:10 AM

Re: Learning About W-30 Cars

I agree with Phil on documentation. I have always joked there are 300 remaining 1970 w-30 convertible 4 speeds of 96 made. So mine is now one of 300 made when there is really only about 25 or less with great paperwork.

That is why bullet proof paperwork and owner history makes for the most valuable cars. Phils cars are the most valuable with great paperwork. Color and options come in secondary. That is just an example of Oldsmobile. Fortunately there has been some tracking of these real cars over the years but I see new ones all the time, interesting stories and weak paperwork.

Re: Learning About W-30 Cars

I totally agree!!!! Paperwork is very difficult to get hold of for the Olds!!

Feel free to ask questions about Olds... maybe we can help out!

There was an automatic convertible at the last Mecum Auction in Belvedere. No docs on that car. And there was a 4 speed hardtop at the Mecum Dallas sale more recently.

Spent better than a year searching for an Aegean Aqua 4 speed ram air Olds after I sold my 68 Hurst Olds.

Timing is everything..................

I suspect with all of the Olds gurus here, you'll get the answers you need. I also agree that much of the "written" material is less than accurate.
