Two recent carb restorations
Submitted for your perusal;
First up is this `65 GTO 389 4 speed Carter AFB. This one was a challenge. I haven't had one this corroded (mainly internally) and nasty on the bench in quite a while. It took a considerable amount of work to bring this one back, but I just finished live testing it and it runs like a champ. Steve; I've been taking in QJets for a little while now, but only on the understanding that if someone sends me a pile of junk that's missing hard parts (i.e. wrong baseplates, throttle shafts, choke hardware, wrong top castings, etc.), it will be their (the customer's) responsibility to source the missing parts. QJets are unique in that there are a TON of proprietary components on them, and as such maintaining a bank of such parts in inventory becomes a colossal pain in the butt. With everything I've got on my plate right now I just don't have the time to spend searching for parts. [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif[/img] That said, I'd be more than happy to do the carb on your grandma's car if you'd like. I'm sure that one's a good unit to start with. Excellent pics, I hope you don't mind if I stash them in my reference library [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif[/img] Funny thing about these carbs--some swear that none of the steel hardware was yellow cad/chromate, and most of the restored Carters (be they AFB's, AVS's or WCFB's) you see such as on eBay usually have all their steel hardware plated bright silver cad/zinc. However, over the years I've picked up several pics of NOS carbs that did have some of the hardware in yellow as yours does, but here's the kicker--sometimes the springs are yellow, sometimes they're clear...sometimes certain levers or links were yellow, sometimes they were clear...there didn't seem to be much continuity and consistency in regards to how certain parts were plated. Same thing goes for QJets--I typically find the choke blade and secondary air doors to be clear on most of the original carbs I've had on my bench, but now & then I get one in that has yellow chromated components. [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif[/img] I've pretty much settled into my own pattern of what gets yellow chromated and what stays clear by using what I've had on my bench for reference. Unless I have a near-NOS/excellent "survivor" carb to start with, I'll probably never be 100% certain as to how each specific component was finished on that particular carburetor, but I try to get them as close as I can. |

I have never seen a pontiac carb new that had anything but a silver throttle arm.As you said,I have seen springs and other levers diff colors.No problem,I posted them for you to use.I have a matching one that was restored by a friend,the patina is much diff as most restored have had the body and top tumbled.I run them on a factory "bathtub" tunnel ram and they look wierd on it because of that.Im running the larger 750s on the intake at this time.Tom

I wish I'd taken pictures of the steel hardware on this AFB after cleaning but before media blasting, the throttle operator and bolt-on bracket absolutely w/o a doubt had remnants of yellow chromate on them, but it was extremely faded. Just last year I had a set of 409/425 Chevy AFB's in that were in very good condition after cleaning, and just as this 65 GTO AFB, they also bore unmistakable remnants of yellow chromate on the levers and primary throttle shaft operator. Here is a pic I found on the internet a long time ago of a NOS `56 Chevy 2X4 carb; note the top casting screws are yellow chromate/cad, but everyone swears they should be clear. The throttle lever and acc. pump arm also appear to be a very faded yellow chromate to me as well, but I can't say for certain since the pic isn't very clear. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...llowscrews.jpg Here are pics I found on the `net of a NOS `56 Pontiac WCFB. The throttle linkage is clearly yellow chromate (compare the finish of the lever to the bright clear fast idle speed screw) as are several of the levers & components on the choke side of the carb, but again, everyone says these parts are supposed to be clear. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...64SDSlarge.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ottomlarge.jpg Again, I just don't think there was that much consistency and continuity in regards to how these components were plated back in the day. messing with the pontiac stuff for almost 50 years I have learned that you never say never.Especially true of the early SD and the RA V stuff.I just picked up a pair of 3010s,only the second set I have actully seen with my own eyes.The other set was on the M/T 62 Tempest that he,Hayden Profett(spelling) and Lloyd Cox built.Tom

That is the God's Honest truth...never say never!...and that applies to just about every aspect of life, not just cars. I'm still learning about things that I *thought* I had figured out years ago lol. |
