1970 SCJ Falcon
So cool. Not a Torino, a Falcon. I'm sure many of you have seen it before. Still, surprised to see it up for sale.

The 385 series SCJs have been under appreciated and largely overlooked. We just dynoed mine at 438hp and over 450ft pounds of torque. Only departure from stock is a roller cam.

Also noticed in one of the ads above that one of the Falcons touted an SCJ but the window sticker only mentions CJ. And another thing...what is the significance of the drag-pak option relative to the nomenclature of the car? And just one more thing...what was included in the Drag pak? Ok, definitely the last one...what was the significance of the shaker hood scoop in the naming of the car? I lied....Would default be rubber floor matting on these Falcons? |

There's a lot of misinformation about Fords - check out Mr. Sefton's '71 Cobra in the latest MCR and you'll see a few mistakes - so I'll try to balance it out the best I can since I'm not a Ford guy.
Any Cobra Jet with the Drag Pack becomes a Super Cobra Jet. Most important is the 3.91 or 4.30 gears (or, for 1971 429 Mustangs, the former or 4.11 gears). Then there's a different carb, rods, and more heavy-duty stuff, plus an external oil cooler. The Drag Pack was available on the non-ram air and ram air cars, but the DP is MUCH rarer on the non-ram air cars. In the past, some references suggest the R-code (428) or J-code (429) motors, which are CJs with ram air, automatically make it a SCJ, but this is not true. SCJs are CJs with Drag Packs - simple as that! |

So the drag pack (with more agressive gears and engine upgrades) denotes the "S" in SCJ?

Yes, the Drag Pack makes the Cobra Jet "Super!"
So here's my bone to pick with the article on Sefton's Cobra: The 429/360 - the Thunder Jet - was not available in 1971. And the other two 429s were Cobra Jets - the C-code without ram air, and the J-code with ram air. The Super Cobra Jet never received its own engine designation per the VIN, so I don't consider it a separate engine. In Mopar Land, you just specified 4.10 gears and then you got the Super Track Pack, so the CJ/SCJ really is not much different except that it was packaged differently and with some heavy-duty engine parts added. And, of course, the SCJ wasn't built for the Torino in 1971, as Marti Auto Works has determined. |

Recall a local kid's Dad buying up bone-stock cool Fords and Shelby's during the gas crisis, one of which being a mint Calypso Coral drag pack '70 SCJ/R Torino C6 column auto and it had solid lifters. Ran pretty strong. |

Yes the Torino got the solid lifters as well as forged pistons, 4 bolt mains, a Holley and more. 375 hp vs 370 for cj.

As a rule of thumb, you can check the axle codes to determine whether a car is an SCJ because the VIN won't say a thing other than if it's a CJ. However, it's not 100% accurate because it's quite possible there are some anomalies out there (for example, there are some documented Thunder Jets with 4.30 gears which wasn't available, but the Drag Pack wasn't available with the TJ either so it was just a gear and not a "pack" in that case).
