62 Corvette 327-340hp

As I had mentioned in the summer, I had purchased an unrestored 62 Corvette. The car has been mostly unused for a period of more than 30 years. I purchased the car from a fellow in Naperville, IL. He had owned the car since 1977. In those years, the car accumulated not even 5,000 miles.

This is a low option car. One top only(soft top delete) 327-340hp, 4 speed, radio delete. Thats about it. The car had evidence of being drag raced early on. The original traction bars are in place as are the studs from what I assume an early scattershield. The block is original, trans was replaced with a numbers matching / date coded unit, and the rear center section is from a 63 fullsize (3.70 ratio)

75% original paint, original interior, solid chassis although has scale (always a midwest car) Hope you enjoy the pics as I have recommisioning the car.

and some more details.......what I really like about this car, is all of the little bits that are true to an original car.

I'll have another one later. Here is a few teasers. I going to leave this one in the can for a while. This is going to get driven for a while before I embark on a resto along with my friend who did the 66 L72 car earlier this year.

-----What a nice survivor this 62 is. And,,,white is absolutely the right color for it, IMO. Just the options that were absolutely necessary, too. I can believe the drag race part as the distributor hold-down bolt has the right wear to it. I can just see the owner getting his distributor wrench wedged in there and not quite hitting the right spot as he is waiting for the next pass while listening to the engine......Bill S

I'll work on that. Here is a pic of my Dad's car. 67 400hp he has owned since 74. Purchased from the original owner.
I rebuilt the engine a few years ago for him and did some detailing.

Me too! I've tried to buy it sooooo many times in the last 20 years. He tells me I have to get the the old fashon way.........inherit it!

Neat car. No hit. Original drivetrain. 67,000 miles. 1 repaint in 1976. Local car as well. That car is what is responsible for my love of cars. While I weigh in around 220lbs now, my parents would just fit me in the back as a youngster when we would go for a ride. My Mom drove the car daily for a couple of summers. I thought my parents were just the absolute coolest. After my Dad took this away from daily duties, he replaced it with a Bandit edition 77 Trans Am. Pontiac 400 with an automatic.

He has a 62 340hp car, and a 63 SWC I did for him year before last.

Tim, great cars! Is your 63 daytona blue or black? I would love to know more about that car.

napa68 10-16-2011 04:12 PM

Re: 62 Corvette 327-340hp

Daytona Blue. I just purchased the car out of an estate (indirectly). Unhit car, OM on the side. Currently has a 70 LT1 short block. One repaint. All of the nice original bits to define and original F.I. car. I believe the mileage on the odometer by the condition of the car as well as some documents from the 80's. I was going to do a post on the car after I really get through it. When I have the title from Wisconsin, I'll order up the shippers report. I've been looking for just a car like this. I'm going to start a restoration thread when I dive in.

Thanks Steve!

Tim,

Anyone into the widewheel RPO276 look is fine with me! Nice ride. Only original once.

I like the wide wheel look also and have a '62 Satin Silver Vette with the small caps. I have a question....the RPO 276 was a no cost opition (you got the wheels but didn't get the full wheel covers because there were no nubs so I guess the cost balanced out). I get a lot of people wanting to know if my car was a big brake car which it wasn't. The 276 was a stand alone option that was available without the big brakes but were the wide wheels also a part of the big brake package? Other words, could you get a big brake car with regular wheels?

Re: 62 Corvette 327-340hp

Technically, I believe it was possible. I have not seen one or known of one. I am not a sharp on 53-62 as I am 63-67.

Re: 62 Corvette 327-340hp

hey tom, I remember your car from vette fest in the past. It is gorgous if memory serves.

I don't think there is a quick answer to your question. This article is my guide on widewheels and bigbrakes. I have a 60 and a 61.
