427 Caprice lead
Got a lead yesterday on a 427 Caprice. A friend of mine already bought the engine and trans from this failed resto project. How do I identify what HP engine it is as the air cleaner is currently missing? I'm hoping to see the car later this week.

Re: 427 Caprice lead
There are 18 '69 B-body 427 engine codes.
It was most likely a 335hp TH400 [LE, LJ] could be 390hp [LC, LI]. This assumes it is the original engine. After 42 years it may not be. |

Re: 427 Caprice lead
But, Lon, what year?
Missed ya this year. And condolences to your family per your recent Moparts post. |
Re: 427 Caprice lead
Gonna hopefully go look at it tomorrow. What I need is info on what numbers to look for and where there are.

Looks like most of it's there, but, ouch, that's a little rough...

Re: 427 Caprice lead now w/ pics!
Assuming the trans is original to the car it is a 335 hp 427 which would be normal in a Caprice or non SS Impala. Trans is a CQ code. The car likely has a 2:73 rear as they were pretty common with that engine/trans combo. Pretty rough car and not financially worth restoring but would be a great parts car.

Re: 427 Caprice lead now w/ pics!
I think it will buff right out :-)

Re: 427 Caprice lead now w/ pics!
I don't like seeing cars that are parted out but this would make a good candidate. Restored it would be hard to beat on the coolness scale.

Re: 427 Caprice lead now w/ pics!
I'm planning on going down Saturday to clean it out and get into the trunk. Gonna look for the code on the front of the block too.

Re: 427 Caprice lead now w/ pics!
Found out today the friend is considering an offer of $1000.00 for engine, trans & rear out of this car. With his scrap business being at an all time low he says he is seriously entertaining it and it'll probably go as he is trying to get moved into his new location. I told him to hold off as I think it all should bring $1500.00. Am I right?

Re: 427 Caprice lead now w/ pics!
After going down and looking at the engine for Rick it is really up in the air what this engine might be truely worth. The owner and I knocked the oil pan off to see inside and we both got shocked. Prior owner has taken rods, pistons, oil pump and main bearings out of it! Crank may be shot. Hard to tell about block since there was no coating done on the walls. Cylinder heads aren't original to the engine as the paint colors/patina is way off. Trans is correct though and rear is a FX 2.56 posi. Owner is now uncertain what he wants to do. Thinks maybe send it down to Coursons in Emlenton to have him check it over to see what's salvageable.
Rick, it was great talking to you and am happy to have looked this over for you. |
Re: 427 Caprice lead now w/ pics!
I appreciate your time, efforts and willingness to help a fellow yenko.net reader out. Unfortunately it was not what we all thought it was but without your help it would have been a real downer upon my receipt.
