Day 2 Paper Thread
I have been collecting Street Machine Nat's stuff for years. Here is some stuff from the very first NSRA Nat's sponsored by Car Craft in 1972 at Memphis. Later Car Craft started their own Street Machine Nat's in 1977 at Indy and by 1980 the NSRA Nat's were defunct.

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
Here is some post 1977 stuff. Many of the items are one off I obtained from Lee Laskey before he passed away such as the "Officials" badges. The nat's also made up special badges for the police to wear and I have some of those also which I obtained from Lee. Lee worked for the ISCA for years then was head of Special Events which put on the Nat's. I might be the only person in the country that has some of these badges as I doubt if the police kept theirs at the time.

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
I went in 79 and 80 and still have all that stuff in my old room at my parent's house.
LOL, I never thought they were worth anything. I still have the stickers, the hats and the beer coolers still in plastic wrap. |
Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
Whitetop - if you EVER want to sell that Car Craft poster I am a buyer.

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
Everybody has their favorite ad from the day and this is one of mine-Mr Gasket ad circa 1976-77. Something about the candy blue and gold just really pops.

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
Thats a great ad I miss those Days!

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
-----Whitetop,,,I keep coming back to your add, which is very cool, but that valvecover still looks too darn long no matter how long I stare at the picture. Im fairly sure you dont know the answer (I obviously dont) but maybe someone here does. Is it a six cylinder valvecover or am I just looking at it cockeyed???.....Bill S

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
Bill
It is a sbc. Does look like a 6 banger though but Mr Gasket never made 6 banger covers in aluminum. |
Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
Well Dave, you know Bill is a BB guy. He probably never saw a sb valve cover. HA!

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
----Seen plenty. Some I wish I hadnt ever looked at. Actually found out that I holed a piston with chunks of the exhaust valve on a very mild 350/250/2bbl mercruiser just tonight. I bought it new and the thing only has about 150 hours on it and it has never been over 4800rpm.. We are scratching our collective heads up here. Of course,,,warrantee is over!!!!!.......Bill S

Vintage 1971 Metalflake paint chart showing their candy apple paint lines, Flip Flops, Star Pearls & Eerie Dress. Metalflake is still around but only carries a few original colors. I remember going to indoor car shows and still being able to smell the fresh lacquer. Laquer gave off a really distinctive smell under the lamps of an ISCA indoor show. Just like mimeograph paper you never forget the smell.I can see "Gary the Local Brush" picking out the colors to put on the Baldwin Motion rainbow scroll car...

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
1970's Gratiot catalog. Gratiot had 7 stores in the Michigan area plus mail order. Amazing how many companies and speed shops where selling speed equipment back in the day. I grew up in a rural area of around 5000 people and lived within a town of around 50k and there were at least 15-20 places that sold speed equipment back in the day.Everything from speed shops, department stores(JC Penny and Harts), auto parts stores etc.
All of these places are gone for the most part. Really tells you how much is going out the doors of Summit and Jegs every year doesn't it? http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...S/IMG_2216.jpg |
Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
Thats nice stuff. Love old catalogs and pamphlets.

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
I think I remember that Vega from a feature in Car Craft.
Does anyone remember a blown 68 Camaro burgundy with ghost flames owned by Gary Fravel from Hot Rod in about 1978? Still one of my favorite cars of all time. |

Still one of my favorite cars of all time. </div></div> Look at the rear of the Vega. It has what appears to say Motion Super Vega on the side stripe. In the Car Craft article I swear it says Motion Super Vega but I called Marshall and he said it never was but I thought he said in our conversation said he did some freelance work for Joel or was a Motion dealer?? But again in the CC article you can see Motion Super Vega clearly in the side stripe. Who sold a new street car back then for 12K other than Joel??It also has a hone overdrive and Joel built another Vega with that exact same hoodscoop and the exact same paint treatment over the scoop. ????????? mystery. Maybe Marshall built a clone back in the day or maybe it's a real Motion Vega and he is trying to find the car first before someone else does and is downplaying it's heritage. Strange. Gary Fravel still has the 68 Camaro and it exactly as in the article. I spoke with him 4 years back. It has never been changed or updated. Also one of my favorite cars. He lives right outside of Columbus and every year when I go to Goodguys I hope he brings it out but every year it's Back in 1978 he drove it to a Zanesville Ohio car show and people just went nuts. People were literally running across the fairgrounds to see it drive in and park. Blowers were fairly new then. I remember him backing up and there was at least 50 people surrounding the car. No one does that today. There are so many nice cars today people are really descentized and the cars built today do not receive the same awe factor today as back then. I never see people run across the show grounds as they did back then to view an arriving car...and I literally mean run. |
Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
whitetop, awesome, thanks for the update. lol, i can't believe i remembered his name but that car is seared into the memory of a 12 yo boy in 1978.
i have the mag with the article on his car that i have got to scan and post here. wow, thanks again. did that guy Marshall Gardner either have that Vega or another that was all custom painted on the sides featured in CC as well? I seem to recall that as well. |

He put Cragars on it as well. |
Re: Day 2 Paper Thread

thanks again |
Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
Here is Marshals Vega above in a later updated configuration.Car was probably prostreeted in the late 70's or early 80's and further updated and there is no link to it's earlier self.

Re: Day 2 Paper Thread
whitetop, did you see the magazine layout for Marshals Vega with the later paint?
I swear in one picture one side had showtubes on it and another pic of the other side had different sidepipes with those perforated screen guards on it. Weird. |
