Is this a real Z28?
http://s1084.photobucket.com/albums/...urd/?start=all
The pad looks good but how do you tell a '67 Z28 from a standard Camaro? Thanks! Dan |
Re: Is this a real Z28?
It is suppose to say 4L on the trim tag. I may be wrong.
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
This one says "4P"
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
4P is SS 350.
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Not that this is one but keep in mind the earliest '67 Z28's were 4P also some early L78 cars too.
Is that a ridge showing on the suffix pad, pad area lower than the deck surface?. ~ |
Re: Is this a real Z28?
might be real, any paperwork? that is close to the first week of production for the New Z which was the end of Dec...I cant recall if any early Z's made it out as 4p cars.
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Is it in Jerry's Registery? Have him look at it if interested. Ask Jon Mello.
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
On eBay... 67Z
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Looks like reserve has been met...currently at 45k
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Let's see...engine is a restamp and reserve is set at $45K...still think it might be real

Re: Is this a real Z28?
contact jon mello or jerry. They have the vin#s of the first 25 67 z28's built.
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
VIN #'s are not on the memo that you are thinking of.
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
I thought the 25 list with the selling dealers had the vin#s.
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Nope.......
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
What a deal huh Mark?
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Ron, it's a shame he spent all that money on it when it would have made a gorgeous "SS" or "RS".
Notice no provision on the floor pans for the factory radius rod? |
Re: Is this a real Z28?
This was the owners reply to me.
Roger, I have no docs but I was able to trace it back to the 2nd owner, I'm number 5. It is #20 of the first 25. I didn't even know about the Z registry until I listed the car and someone told me about it. - kinyurd |

As long as the trim tag is the original, w/ 4P and 3L wasn't it an SS/RS already just not one of the early Z's unless solidly substantiated?. ~ Pete |
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Without the provison for the radius rod in a Jan car, I would think it was originally a 275hp 327 car (L30)???
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
the original owner of my 67 rs/ss told me that he brought the car back to the dealership to have the radius arm installed. it is a 12D production date.

Re: Is this a real Z28?
To clarify this one, the basic result using info above is 4P/3L cowl tag cannot be original to this car?.

Re: Is this a real Z28?
I have seen the list; all 25 VINs are on it. How do you think Jon Mello knows he has #1?
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Supposedly only the first 16 were 4P cars. I've seen #19 and it was a 4L. Does anybody know how Jon is doing on the resto of car #1? I'd love to hear/see where he's at.
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
william, i thought so. seen it, but vin#s where blurred. I knew i was correct, but not worth a pissing match. Roger
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
I own a nice 1967 Camaro 12 Bolt rear that has the original factory traction bar bracket, casting dated Dec.6,1966, not sure what date GM started adding the bracket.

Really, I was friends with Jon when he found the number 1 car and remember the event well and still have the emails from him explaining the whole event. It is described in the thread below and a copy of the "list" is there too. There are no vins on it. The order numbers are blurred, not the vins. Jon and I were trying to find Mo Carter's car which was also one of the first 25 and if he had the VIN it would have been easy! We had to work the known body numbers from cars already found on the list and the recieving dealers to try and guesstimate the VIN of Mo's car |
Re: Is this a real Z28?
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
I should also mention that I think Jon is the perfect owner for the number 1 car!
And yes, I have a copy of the list that I got directly from Jon years agao |
Re: Is this a real Z28?

Re: Is this a real Z28?
Great picture! That is what the 67 Z runs today D/S.
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
That car sold back in 2006 with NOM and was sold as a SS350. I'm a doubter it's a Z.....
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Has #9-10-11 been found that was sold new at nickey?
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Does anyone have information on the number 20 car? What does the dealer code reference?
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
I got a pm from a former Funston employee with some more info and pics of the Mod Topper. Here are his messages followed by some pics.
"...the mod topper was a 1967 z-28 camaro delivered to Funston Chevrolet in time for us to get it ready for Autorama in Jan '68....we stripped the car and painted it with Apricot metalflake and mother of pearl 'z' stripes and a George Barris Paisley vinyl roof cover installed by Bob Galetti at Reasonable Trim Shop. interior was stock 'plain jane' vinyl...the name on the door 'Jim Shorts' was a spoof and referred to no one in particular...a buddy of mine and i took it to the New Baltimore drag strip (MHRA) a few times and ran it, it never took any trophies because we ran it bone stock with street tires...it was mostly a 'gotcha' car and it was loaned to AMT for creation of an plastic model which they actually marketed....while AMT had the car it was stolen and when recovered all that was returned to Funston was the body shell completely stripped of everything that could be unbolted...funston scrapped the shell....we also created a pair of black '68 camaros with Houndstooth black and white vinyl roof covers.....these were salesmen's demos and were driven by Joe Clark and Vince(i don't remember his last name).....Funston was a fun place to work and when it closed in '72 i moved on to Stan Yee's Collision in East Detroit another shop known for it's specialized auto work.......rich" "....i believe it was the first 'Z' delivered in the Detroit.....AMT actually made the 'Mod Topper' model to include the decals and Mod Top but as i recall it was molded in a bronze plastic color....the body shop scrapped the 'hulk' and i suppose if somebody was slick enough they could have done some phoney baloney but i think with the car never having been legally titled and only a Statement of Origin from the factory, in Michigan it would have been near impossible." https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...redownload.png https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...download_1.png https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...download_2.png https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...download_3.png https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...download_4.png |
Re: Is this a real Z28?
ummm ... no optional rear bumper guards that all the Z28's came with ... maybe they were removed?
|
Re: Is this a real Z28?
Look like 14" wheels too.

I thought rear guards were clearly an "option" for the 67 Z, not part of the package. |
