Magnesium wheels
I inherited a cool set of magnisium wheels from a good friend. They appear to be made for Corvette disc brakes, so they are probably from 1965 or so. They are feather light and have no markings at all on them. They are 15 x 6 and 15 x 7 in size. Did American wheels have markings on them from the manufacturer? |

Re: Magnesium wheels
I believe only the aluminum American Torque Thrusts had lettering on the back side. The magnesium wheels, I believe, had non.

Re: Magnesium wheels
-----WOW!!! Tim,,,If I had that set of wheels Id start to look for the right mid-year Corvette to put them on. A 65 thu 67 competition oriented Corvette is out there somewhere just yelling for those. Nice set of correct size Blue Streaks would complete things, too.
-----My choice,,,66 427/425 silver/black coupe. No radio, J-56, etc. No foo-foo options. Big tank optional!!!......Bill S |
Re: Magnesium wheels
Wow...can I give you one of my children for them ?

Re: Magnesium wheels
Thank you for the offer, but they're not for sale. They were Paul Dehnert's and when we helped move all his cars and bikes for the May Mecum auction his wife graciously gave all of his friends many of his parts and supplies. The guys knew I always loved these wheels and I now own something that was from a good friend. I'll keep them as long as I can.

Re: Magnesium wheels
Charley, I'd have to pay for the wedding if I did that....

Re: Magnesium wheels
I think I remember Paul saying Charley should really have these wheels..Yeah that was it...

Didn't you have one like that (or close) in Hinsdale? I remember a body lift party at your house one evening around 1984........... Maybe I am thinking of another car. Jake |
Re: Magnesium wheels
Actually, Vicki asked me to deliver them to Charley. She knew I'd take good care of them until I could get them to him. I'll drop them off next time I head that way........

Why anyone would want to use a set of dangerously skinny, crack-prone, flammable metal wheels on a street car is beyond me! I'm gonna replace mine with a nice set of Rallys soon.

Re: Magnesium wheels
or sell em and buy a front bumper.

Maybe you can paint it to match those aluminum fenders... That paint seems to be holding well... |

I want to say that mine have a 1965 casting date on the the back side of the spokes. You've got to look very closely because the numbers are cast very shallow but they should be there. As bitchin' as they look and don't hold me to this . . . . . .but I'm pretty sure that those particular wheels you have would require a spacer for disc brake caliber clearance. I agree with Bill though, they would be so tough on a '66 L-72 Coupe stripped-down! |
