Remember this for sale thread where no real info ever got posted ?

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...098&page=8

It's actually a very nice L78 with orig. engine , trans , paperwork etc. Almost all orig. paint from what I can tell. After all that grief in the other thread I end up owning it. Go figure. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...name=photo.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...ilename=44.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...me=Image19.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...me=Image13.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...ame=photo9.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...me=photo13.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...lename=014.JPG https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...lename=019.JPG

Really nice. Is it clean enough to be preserved or is a restoration on the table?

Only 15 pages?? I like the thread about the 1 of 1 alum head 70 Nova with the 074 heads better....

Cool car Charlie....Congrats !!! (Is there a muscle car You have not owned at one time or another?? haha)

Re: Speaking of Novas

Actually someone started detailing..Subframe was pulled and restored. Engine had what were supposedly dealer installed aluminum heads. During detailing the heads were pulled and the iron ones re-installed, engine painted etc. It ended up in resto jail for a few years till the owner went and pulled it out unfinished. He then apparently sold it as is. Nothing is hooked up under the hood and stuff needs redoing under there. Way too nice of a car to restore though. I'm told it has orig. carpet with several snaps in the carpet to hold down what was supposed to be a extra piece of carpet that straddles the trans tunnel ?

Re: Speaking of Novas

Very cool Nova. It would be interesting to know the sequence of how the aluminum heads were switched out. Any way to find out if it was done before the original owner took delivery of the car? He may have an interesting story to tell.

Re: Speaking of Novas

I know I have read about it before and I most likely commented on it. I have a family friend that worked as a gm mechanic in the late 60's and said he installed multiple sets of aluminum heads on car's when they were new? He said it was very common. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Speaking of Novas

Very nice car Charley. Hudiburg Chev is still in business. The family also has several other dealerships here in OKC area.

So... not trying to stir things up, but did you buy this car from Ralph (the guy who posted it for sale back in 06)?

Also, did he in fact have twin L78 Green/Black Novas?

Charley Lillard 03-07-2011 07:54 PM

Re: Speaking of Novas

No it has changed hands I think 3 times since I guess Ralph had it but just sat.

No. I, like Jason, have talked to people who had the heads changed when the car was new. Just trying to maybe establish a pattern. If we can find enough people who can confirm that they had the dealership change the heads over to aluminum before they actually took delivery, you can maybe lay to rest, the "came from the factory" availability issue.
If we find original owners who can say,"we tried to order aluminum heads as an RPO but were told they were'nt available", then perhaps we can assume, that what we see as factory ordered, were in fact, dealer installed before delivery.
The question I would like answered is, if not RPO, why not.

Here I am sitting quietly and I get "Poked" with a stick....LOL....
After a year all I can say about the 1 of 1 thread is that this site is probably the best site on the net for that car to get scrutinized.......Bottom line the car was built 5 months after the option was cancelled by GM and the owner swore up and down the 074 heads were original to the engine......as we had shown......GM "Never" made a piston for that bore/head combo....
The dealer swap story makes a lot more sense than the Factory story.........again....In my opinion, the car was given credibility thru the Hemmings article and once that happened the owner was boxed into a corner......... if it's a magazine it must be true......Agian, this site has a collective knowledge base that is the best on the net, IMHO
