Best lubrication - seized manifold bolts
Would someone please post (again) a list of best lubricants. It was a best to worst list based on torque required to break the bolt free. It included wd40, pb blaster and a bunch of other concoctions.
Thank you |
Re: Best lubrication - seized manifold bolts
Kroil, pb blaster, wd-40

Re: Best lubrication - seized manifold bolts
Someone once told me that the best stuff is not even made. Testing was done and I would love to have some real world testing by someone that I know. The witches brew is a half and half mixture of acetone and ATF. Someone willing to try?

Re: Best lubrication - seized manifold bolts
Sam, Power Blaster always worked for me but it's not always a 100% remedy... Saturate the bolts/area and let it sit overnight and then try it..
OR I'm not sure which manifold bolts you are referring to.. But you could try putting a little heat on them.. Just have to be sure you don't snap em' off when screwing them out, GO SLOW.... Then it's drill out time!!! Been there done that.... Rich |
Re: Best lubrication - seized manifold bolts
If exhaust manifolds to head bolts, depending on what engine sometimes it's better to torch the heads off and slip the manifolds off over the bolt..
With the manifold off you can access the head with heat and using grips or good quality battery pliers on the protruding stud and heat where they thread into the head they can easily turn out and a whole lot better than playing stud extraction games w/ broken bolts.. If flange bolts, heat your nuts!. Anyone here ever try the candle wax trick?. Good luck!. ~ Pete |

Kroil works very well!!

Re: Best lubrication - seized manifold bolts
I use the candle wax method all the time and it works pretty damn nice. Ever try getting a steal heater hose fitting out of an aluminum intake? I could never get it out without cracking the aluminum until I tried the candle wax and it worked great. Now I use it all the time.

Thanks all. Rick can you elaborate on the candle wax method?

Re: Best lubrication - seized manifold bolts
I recall the candle method from years ago but I've forgotten the procedure. Heat the surrounding area for expansion from the bolt, then hold a candle or stick of paraffin next to the bolt? Kinda like sweating copper pipe?
Seems like the list you're asking about included Kroil near the top but like Rusty says their "Best Method" was acetone and ATF. Also (again, going on an old guys memory) they put good old Liquid Wrench near the top, especially considering cost/oz. |
Re: Best lubrication - seized manifold bolts
Found something on the H.A.M.B. Is this what you were looking for Sam?
"I was reading a copy of Machinists Workshop magazine and they did a comparison test of several products used to loosen stubborn, rusted lock fasteners. They arranged a test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a bolt in a rusted environment. This is what they found. Penetrating oil used Torque to remove nut None 516 pounds WD-40 238 pounds PB Blaster 214 pounds Liquid Wrench 127 pounds Kano Kroil 106 Pounds ATF-Acetone Mix 53 Pounds The ATF-Acetone mix as you know is a home brew mixed 50-50." |

Thanks for the tip Rick!!!!! I just removed 3 plugs/fittings out of a aluminum intake and the wax method worked GREAT. Kurt |
