I would expect a way better restoration for almost $200,000.

Stripe done wrong, '69 wheels, '67 hub caps, '67 mirror, NAPA wiper motor, stupid tank strap "insulators" Chevy never used missing AIR system, aftermarket rear springs. The photo of the tag shows dirt & rust under new paint.

If it is real it deserves to be re-done correctly.

The power steering pump pulley is wrong and the crank pulley is for a non-ps car.

I don't think it has the "deep center" chrome air cleaner lid on it either? Looks like a cheap Summit Racing version? Correct me if I am wrong.

All that work and it has that cheap-o air cleaner on it!

the "restorer" probably liked the 67 style because it has the cute bow tie on it

also missing rear bumper guards

that air cleaner is so cheap looking it makes you look at everything else under the hood with suspicion:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z...maroL89015.jpg

since the car has deluxe interior that means the car originally came with a trunk mat, I would think they would WANT to cover up their ugly trunk with one ...

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z...maroL89037.jpg

why do people leave aftermarket tire stickers on the spare tire? They never came from the factory with stickers on them ...

I bet alot more people would join this site or put more rare finds on this site if you guys wouldnt BASH every car that pops up. I dont know the guy or the car,but I'd be pissed if I were him. Maybe he didnt have the funds for all NOS parts,or maybe he didnt have the knowledge?? Who knows it might be a Clone or made up. Just seems like this site is all about BASHING others cars, and someone else's work...

I get where you are coming from but this site is also about education... and maybe the guy who owns the car did not know any better. Maybe he paid good money to have the car restored and now he can learn a few things , double check and go back to the shop that did the work and say , "hey you did this this and this wrong" If it was my car I would want to know. And if it is a L89 rag top it is a rare car a worth a discussion IMO because maybe a person who is a particpant on this board may come across a simliar car and will know what to look for.

Anyone who is looking to pay top dollar for an L89 Camaro should know that there is some pretty expensive fixes on this car in question. It would cost another 15k at least for the right correct restored parts. The car in question is a very nice car (nicer than anything I own), but to ask $198,000 for it and have it missing the smog system with a $15 air cleaner lid says a lot about what else COULD be wrong with it. Just my .02 on the car.

Jimmy I agree with you, but, if you are asking $198k for this car, it better be restored right.

I agree this site is educational. Rare cars are worth a discussion as well. But IMO there are other ways of discussing a car.

"why do people leave aftermarket tire stickers on the spare tire? They never came from the factory with stickers on them" ... Educational statement!!

since the car has deluxe interior that means the car originally came with a trunk mat, I would think they would WANT to cover up their ugly trunk with one ...
Comedian statement!!

I might be wrong?? I just feel your participation on this site would be over the top without certain everyday comments on here. I know a number of guys who have great and rare cars that are for sale that wont put them on this site for just this reason.

Re: 68 CAMARO RAG TOP L89 CAR ON EBAY

I have said it before and will say it again here on this site. This is constructive criticism!!!!!! When someone is asking this kind of money for a car like this and has an ad printed up advertising it like they are, these things should be brought not only to the seller's attention but to a potential buyer's.

I would really hate to see someone pay this kind of BIG $$$$ for a car like this and later come to find out that there are multiple things wrong and restored incorrectly because they just didn't know any better... How do you think the buyer would feel then. It would be embarrassing to say the least.

None of the cars I own are perfect and if someone that is more educated on the factory correctness of the car points out errors in the restoration I consider it a learning process, correct the problem and move on!! This not only educates me but makes the car much better as well!!

Now there are certain individuals out there that just bash a cars restoration maybe because they feel they can do it better, they are insecure about themselves or they pick on someone's car because they have some type of aftermarket day 2 product on it such as wheels, tachometer, valve covers etc.... that they may not like or think look good on the car.
This is wrong...

Just my .02 HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Rich

If you think this crowd is tough, try the Corvette guys. They are in a whole different league of nitpickiness and for me, they are a lot bigger downer.
I think you have to look at it this way; You're on a message board that is centered around discussion of LOTS of original and correctly restored muscle cars, and specifically Chevrolet stuff. Anytime you are around a group that is that specialized, you're gonna have people that are extremely honed in on the car being done correctly. That is the nature of the beast, and I think it is welcomed by a lot of people that frequent this board.

I also agree with the poster that said "for $198k, it better be correct". Along that same vein, if you don't know what you're looking at and you're willing to spring for that kind of price, don't come crying to anyone here if you ever realize what you do or dont have.

All that being said, pretty nice car... but I wouldn't pay what they want for it.

When I build a 100K+ car and put it on this site I expect and want it to be critiqued. I don’t need it to be sugar coated and spoon feed to me. I need to learn what I’ve done wrong so I don’t make that mistake again. Sometimes it’s painful but always helpful and 99% of the time done in a constructive way. Un-necessary short cuts always call a car of this caliber into question. JMO

Try and understand that when some dude shows up on pee bait with the #3 next to his handle and asks 189 for a restored Camaro that is full of bogas junk and made up Happy Marks.. it makes some of us crazy.
And Rich is correct, there is allot to learn about correctness, even from a post like this one.
Did I mention the Eaton leaf springs and the incorrectly mounted tire in the trunk...

While some may scoff at the Corvette guys - they were really the first ones to establish the "standards" that many in the steel body crowd now follows when it comes to originality and restoration quality.

I'm not scoffing at the Corvette guys, don't get me wrong. That level of correctness has its place. However, for my money, I would much rather enjoy the car then spend my time nit picking 5 or 10 details that dont make it "Concours" correct.
Just me 2 cents, YMMV.

Jake ... you brought up a point that is worth discussion . Nothing wrong with any of us who critique a car to look at how we articulate our points.

In the end I think what is done here helps the hobby and those involved. I do not think the intent is to exclude anyone from the hobby or the site. It is to simply make information available that is discussed by many people and in the end draws a popular consensus about what is correct on any given car discussed. This site and threads like this one have been invaluable to me in restoring or correcting issues with my first gen Camaros

I believe the stripe is correct for such an early car. However, my Norwood 68 built in December still had the black ash tray with the simulated wood surround on the dash. I also noticed that the dash pad does not have the stainless steel trim along the bottom.

I think I saw another thing missing. I am not sure if this is just on 69's but I guess it would be on 67-68's as well.

I am talking about the bracket that holds the parking brake cables. It is mounted on the inner most front bolt of the axle sping pearch.

This is a picture from a 69 Z who has this bracket.

And here is the car inquestion:

The style of stripe is correct; how they applied it is not. It should end at the front bumper, not continue around the fender.

He states “bulletproof documentation” in the second to last sentence. I would think that’s factory paperwork such as a Warranty Plate or window sticker.
You’re right, he doesn’t state original engine, he did have a picture of the pad posted yesterday and he listed the numbers from the block in his write-up. I’m sure that that question is being asked directly by anyone interested in the car. I wonder why he pulled the picture of the pad?

Re: 68 CAMARO RAG TOP L89 CAR ON EBAY

Personal opinion here but presenting such a car and price using unsubstantiated facts like 'one of six produced' instead of a firm statement of pedigree and what documents exist or mention of engine/stampings being original or what may be available to serious buyers makes one wonder why?.
Cool car and all but the way sounds it could be a 'Vette style 'restoration engine' and docs that may not be so bulletproof?.

Perhaps the rarest RPO big-block camaro EVER!! One of only six produced and one of only two known to exist. And the only RS/SS.

Do your homework and see this is the lowest production big block camaro ever produced. Its a true american muscle icon with bullet proof documentation to back it up.

Seems like the Seller set the bar pretty high........So whats the problem with a little Scrutiny.......And this site has the knowledge base to supply it!!

I am sure the paperwork is as strong as the rest of the car. What is it about aluminum heads on a car for sale that makes things get strange?

Mark, I'm sure it is because the aluminum head option is pretty rare for the most part and not seen too often..
