1969 Z28 dates
Hi Guys,
Looked at an LA '69 Z28 today. 11A build, 52B paint, 712 interior. Motor is stamped V1028DZ (Flint, October, 28, 68). There is one week's time between the motor build date and the car's build date. I'm rusty with Cali Z28s but I find it hard to believe the motor went from Michigan to CA in one week to be mated with the car. I also have my doubts on the pad. What are your thoughts? Any help would be great. Thanks, Dan http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4..._DSC0007-7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4..._DSC0006-8.jpg |
Re: 1969 Z28 dates
Looks OK to me, both datewise and stamp.
I think I know the car, email me the VIN or post the VIN and I may be able to help. |
Re: 1969 Z28 dates
Correct me if I'm wrong but those don't appear to be the correct 186 heads that all Z28's had.
They probably didn't start production on the car until the engine was at the plant in CA so the dates seem very possible to me. |
Re: 1969 Z28 dates
E-mail Mcneish about it too.

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
They're not the correct heads. Good eye Randy! They're painted aluminum heads.
Is pad surface a concern? The motor has been decked and the broach marks are not really present. Character font looks fine despite not seeing many broach marks. Does this detract from resale? The car is for a friend. Thanks for the information guys! Much appreciated. Dan |
Re: 1969 Z28 dates
The numbers would be gone if the block was decked so if the block has in fact been decked, it must have been re stamped???

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
The pad stamping is real. Looks like someone went gung-ho with a scotchbrite pad on a drill....

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
I agree with Kurt on the Scotch Bright...been there, done that...

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
Did Van Nuys stamp the VIN near the oil filter pad?

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
Van Nuys stamped the VIN on the top pad at least until the end of February. I just picked up a DZ block from an LA car that was assembled Feb. 12th and it has the VIN on the top pad. I would say the car in question was probably built November of 1969 rather than 1968. He will need to check the VIN of the car to verify.

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
My certified Z was built March 3rd week and the vin was stamped on the stamp pad. An small block RS I had was a Jun build and stamped down by the oil filter. JM would know the timeframe to the gnat's a$$ when the switch was made.

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
I read somewhere they started at the pad first, then went down by the oil filter and back to the pad again at some point with the LA built cars,is this true??

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
03D Van Nuys VIN on pad

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
01B LA built vin stamped by the oil filter, 03B vin stamped on the pad. The LA plant used both locations for vin stamping prior to April '69. Has anyone seen an LA built small block with a vin on the pad later than March '69? I think Charlie had an early (Sept. '68) LA built Z that was vin stamped by the oil filter. The LA plant couldn't make up their mind where to stamp the vin it seems.

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
My LA Z is 04C and is stamped with the vin on the front pad.

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
My 04L Nor JL8 Z/28 is by the oil filter and yes it is stamped 04L.

Re: 1969 Z28 dates
My 02D Z/28 NOR car vin is by the oil filter - same for my 69 yenko camaro - 02D car as well
