Russo and Steele Announcement...Part two!

LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!

Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auction Reveals New Location

Immediate Release
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., - (November 1, 2010)– Russo and Steele Collector Automobiles, one of the nation’s premier collector car auctions, specializing in European sports cars, American muscle cars, hot rods and customs announces its new Scottsdale auction event location.

The 11th Annual Scottsdale Auction Event will remain in Scottsdale, Arizona, but move to a new venue to the east of its previous year’s location. The Scottsdale 2011 auction event, January 19-23, 2011, will be held at the intersection of the Loop 101 Freeway and Hayden Road, in North Scottsdale.

Following last year’s challenges, Russo and Steele, the Arizona State Land Department and the City of Scottsdale worked tirelessly to find a new location to better serve the needs of attendees and clients. The new location – just to the east of the previous venue, offers significant advantages for weather proofing, drainage and the ability for Russo and Steele to install much needed site improvements such as asphalt top surfaces.

In addition to the new venue location and asphalt, this year’s event will feature a new Losberger main auction structure. Manufactured in Germany, this new structure will afford an “all encompassing environment” in which to hold all the event elements including the main auction block, vehicle staging, vendors, sponsors and all the amenities that Russo and Steele is uniquely known for.

Of course, easy freeway access of the North Loop 101 will continue, with ample parking, valet services and entry off the Hayden Road exit. The multi-year agreement will keep Russo and Steele as a vibrant part of the Scottsdale Collector Car landscape for many years to come.

The co-owner and CEO of Russo and Steele commented on the new location and its affect to the Scottsdale auction event: “A huge ‘thank you’ goes out to our partners at the State Land Department and the City of Scottsdale Mayor, Council and Staff. Countless hours were invested, looking at every conceivable option to improve and ensure the long standing quality event we have invested so many years to build. Russo and Steele is ready to put the pedal to the metal, as we make the strongest statement in our 11+ year history. Russo and Steele is back; better than ever!”

Evidently, Russo and Steele has 'decided' (with a little 'help' from Barrett-Jackson ) to un-relocate.....

I just don't understand why they have to be at the same time anyways, there are a couple other auctions in the area at the same time too. I would think that would dilute the buyers and consignors, but I guess they know a lot more about it then I do.

People fly in for this particular week in Scottsdale. Some of the smaller auction houses have tried holding auctions the following week with dismal results. Much like Monterey, eveything happening at the same time appears to be the most successful approach. It's a blast!

I think they feed off of each other and brings in lots of people, kind of like auto dealers row or a group of restaurants.

I believe the correct terminology for a group of lawyers is called "an argument" (not a pack)

Re: Russo and Steele Announcement...Part three!

The term "pack" is customarily used because it refers to hyenas which are the closest living relatives to the modern lawyer, Hyenis Litiginous

I think it was Mark Twain (or maybe Yogi Berra) who said: "The town that can't afford one lawyer, can always afford two."

Re: Russo and Steele Announcement...Part three!

In todays AZ Republic:

RS vs BJ

Scottsdale's three collector-car auctions are a month away, but a long-simmering dispute between Barrett-Jackson and Russo and Steele boiled over like an overheated radiator last week.

The latest skirmish involves empty real estate at Hayden Road and Loop 101 that Russo co-owner Drew Alcazar wanted to use for his 11th annual auction, moving the event a mile east from Scottsdale Road and Loop 101.

Craig Jackson, Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. chairman, objected to Russo moving to the state land at Hayden and 101, saying he needs the site for overflow parking during his 40th annual auction at WestWorld.

"We can't co-exist using the same piece of property," Jackson said, later suggesting that Alcazar move his event a week later to "see if he can survive on his own."

Alcazar, who worked for Jackson before starting his own event, accused Jackson of being anti-competitive and using his lobbying muscle to block his move to the Hayden site.

"Barrett-Jackson succeeded in delaying (the move), derailing it and putting us under duress," Alcazar said. "They sort of won."

Russo and Steele will return to its Scottsdale Road site for its auction Jan. 19-23. It is trying to recover from a calamitous storm that blew down its tents last year and did millions of dollars in damages to classic cars.

The much-larger Barrett-Jackson auction is Jan. 17-23 in the massive tent at WestWorld.

Gooding and Co., in its fourth year in Scottsdale, will hold its auction Jan. 21-22 at Scottsdale Fashion Square. RM Auctions is Jan. 20-21 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.

Russo sought city deal
Scottsdale had been working on an agreement that would have allowed Russo to move to a 25-acre site southwest of Hayden and 101 and put down an asphalt pad for one year, with a possibility of extending the deal for five more years.

The city manages 380 acres of state land at Hayden and 101 under a special land-use permit with the Arizona State Land Department that is up for renewal in June. Alcazar said he could not risk investing close to $200,000 to grade and pave a 45,000-square-foot area without having a long-term deal in place, especially with Barrett-Jackson objecting to the move.

"I'm not asking for a sweetheart contract like Craig gets at Scottsdale," Alcazar said.

"We do our own little thing, we contribute to the tax base of the city of Scottsdale," he added.

Scottsdale nixes relocation
Jackson accused Alcazar of trying "to pull a fast one" in announcing a move to the Hayden site before he had a deal.

"He's trying to play me like I'm a bully," Jackson said. "But he had no such agreement."

Barrett-Jackson relies on the Hayden site for overflow parking that becomes vital if wet weather washes out some of its parking at WestWorld and on the soccer fields near the TPC Scottsdale.

Scottsdale initially indicated it would allow Russo to move to the Hayden site but later decided against the relocation.

Brian Dygert, WestWorld general manager, sent an e-mail to Alcazar on Nov. 19 indicating the Hayden site was an option for Russo's 2011 auction.

Four days later, Dygert informed Alcazar that the city "is unable to fulfill your requests for the 2011 event."

Scottsdale tried to figure out a way to accommodate both events, but that turned out to be too complex.

Barrett-Jackson, which conducted its first auction at the former Safari Resort downtown in 1971, has been operating at WestWorld since 1989.

Dygart declined to comment on whether Alcazar is correct in claiming that Barrett-Jackson gets favorable treatment from the city.

"I can't speak on that one," Dygert said. "I'm kind of a middle guy. . . . I take direction like everybody else."

----I love the statement about ethics by B/J. I wonder if ethics were involved when my primetime spot (that I paid extra for) at 6:30 on Friday somehow morphed into 10:30 at night. The only people left were me, the auctioneer, a smart bidder, and other passed out bidders (3). I also wonder if ethics were involved when B/J would do nothing to compensate me or any of the other car owners with numbers around me. They wouldnt even give me back the extra money I paid to run across the block at 6:30.
----In the interest of fairness I didnt expect to go off at 6:30. Im not that nieve, but by 7:30 would have been an understandable delay.......Bill S

Ouch, that does stink.

What auction did this happen at? What car? What caused the timing to be that far off?

Re: Russo and Steele Announcement...Part three!

It's pretty obvious that all auctions are crooked to varying degrees. Mecum may be the exception, heard good things and haven't dealt with them. RS and BJ owners and employees always make my skin crawl when I am in their immediate vicinity. I get the same sensation around politicians. Craig Jackson spouting off about ethics is priceless.

When they started the no reserve only format, they traded the best consigned cars ever for american greed.

Re: Russo and Steele Announcement...Part three!

I have a suggestion for B-J that would increase the money bid for any stalled cars. We've all seen times when Craig or other special speakers offer incentives to the car. I think a very popular incentive would be to allow the winning bidder to smack those silly dark glasses off of Steve's smug face.

Re: Russo and Steele Announcement...Part three!

Take a look at BJ's Auction List. It's laughable and greed (100% Sell-through with No Reserve) has gotten them to this point. The best part though is when they lead people to believe that they have "hand-selected" the various consignments. They sell what shows up. And with some exceptions, it's starting to look like a Kruse Auction.

Re: Russo and Steele Announcement...Part three!

----Happened about 6 or 7 years ago. Some of the members here will remember the Autumn Gold 70 LS6 Chevelle I had there. Ill let others who saw the car that weekend comment on its quality.
----Several of us later found out that owners of cars long before ours on Friday had piggy-backed more cars onto ones they already had consigned. In other words, a consigner might have had Friday # 75. He then at a later date closer to the auction would call B/J and somehow squeeze three or more cars onto that same auction #, I.E. 75A, 75B, 75C, etc, etc. There were several of these "additions" that day. All the cars after these "extra" cars were therefore delayed by the amount of time taken to sell them. I just didnt know at the time what the letters meant!
----None of us harmed individuals were aware of this "ethical" practice that Im sure probably still goes on today. I figured at the time that I probably lost somewhere between 10 and twenty thousand due to this "ethical" practice!......Bill S

I read something about it as well. The lights in his office are on a dimmer switch as well due to an eye condition.
