Yenko-Canonsburg
WOW... I've always been enamored with the super cars put out by dealerships in the past, but having grown up in Montana I had no real exposure to them except through the car magazines. My favorites were Yenko (they looked more factory) & Baldwin/Motion (they looked more threatening).
Now that I live in NHRA Div. 1, I am able to reminesce and live in the past a little. I took a drive to Canonsburg the other day to visit Pike St. & purused the old dealership. Talk about a somber and nostalgic feeling. I could imagine all the new fall 69's lined up and the Camaros & Chevelles tearing up the streets of that little Burg with the new owners having no idea what this Icon, Yenko, would become. Anyway it was fun. Thanks Cleary's for the web site. Dicky |
Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
It is an eery feeling when you are walking the old Yenko lot in Canonsburg! Did you check out the little creek out back, or walk across the street to get the 'Jim Buckles' view?

Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
Marlin, I did not view from across the street but I did imagine the dirt lot out back full of new, yet to be serviced cars, as I had seen in photos from this site. Very cool, and some how wish it could be preserved in someway.

Cool you guys have been there!. Closest I got was last March on the trip South to Fla. but w/ two vehicles full o' kids & adults everyone thought I was crazy even mentioning the idea!. http://hotimg23.fotki.com/a/76_75/11...klot-vi-th.gif ~ Pete |
Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
What's the story on that building now? Is it for sale? There's a motorcycle/ATV operation there now or something? Why aren't there more events/shows there?

Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
Tracker, the place is occupied with some cycle type out fit but is in terrible disarray. I believe there was a "FOR LEASE" sign in the window, but considering the condition of the interior I would bet it could be bought.

Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
I was at a wedding close to there about a year ago, and took a drive past the dealership. I was really bummed to see the condition of the place. It was fun to imagine how it must have looked 40 years ago, but sad to see it now. I have a Dave Snyder print in my office to remind me of the "good ol' days"

Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
can someone near there find out who owns the property,
if the price is reasonable i will pursue it, save the building |
Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
I'd certainly be willing to throw a few sheckles into the mix to keep it preserved. If we can be paying members on a website, we can be members in a building preservation group.

For those of us that cannot visit in person, fear not as Google has us covered.
Click on the following link and select "street view". Enjoy the historic Yenko Chevrolet as if you were standing in the street directly in from of it. Yenko Chevrolet Street View Here is the dealership back in the day: http://www.firstgencamaro.com/yenkopics/yenkodealer.jpg |
Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
I'd like to take a road trip out to see it some time. I visted Mr. Norm's a few years ago. Sitting at the curb right in front of the old showroom was, as Marlin said, eerie.

Here are some angles from the Google street views:

Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
I don't know when the google street view photo's were taken, but this does not look like a very prosperous part of Canonsburg.

Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
There's a prosperous part of Canonsburg?

Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
I always understood the pic as being from out back to the left side but comparing the street view and terrain elevation across the street it very well could be...does anyone know for sure?.
And how far back does operation of the DQ across the street go?. Also what was the site contaminated w/ radiation stories a few years back all about?. ~ Pete |
Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
I cannot believe with all of the interest in these cars that no one here has set up a non-profit and bought this place as a museum!!!!
The building seems like it is still quite intact and could be restored. |
Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
Found the thread w/ the note about the radiation thing..
Note what's written below the famous lot pic!. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...348&page=1 Online info indicates the radiation part of the story is absolutely true but not necessarily on any of the property Yenko's dealership was actually located on.. Google the two words canonsburg and radiation...wow!. Also the holding lot location may not be behind or across the street but actually a block or so away?. Here's a couple more photos below...thanks to Joe Barr!. Note the Grumman style Van in the holding lot pic...Copo 'SWAT' vehicle?. Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
If that's a bridge I see in Joe's photo, between the car lot and the white house in the distance, the photo was probably taken near the river behind the dealership.

Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
I visted the Canonsburg store a year or so ago. It looks pretty much the same today. Here is the link to the old thread with good pics.

Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
Thanks Ray for your research.
I called a couple of times to try and get some info on the property. Finally got ahold of Richard who had me call his brother Greg. Seems like they own several properties on W.Pike and other than leasing some space in the rear part of the Yenko dealership (not showroom area) there was no interest in selling. He said that it was their retirement money(to sell) whenever that time came around. The tax files show the purchase price @ $200K. My take on that is that the 1.5 acre plot is worth $195K, because the structure is in such disrepair. IMO & my $.02 worth. Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
Maybe they need some convincing that, between the building only getting worse, and the radiation issue nearby, their property values aren't exactly going to go up.
How cool would it be for a bunch of Yenko fans to purchase that place, and indeed make it a museum to Don and family? |
Re: Yenko-Canonsburg
Is there no one (on this site or even alive) that worked at the dealership that could provide these details?
IE: where the satellite lot was exactly? What other buildings or property was a part of the dealership? It looks like it would have been bigger. I love historical stuff like this, even though this isn't that old, history wise. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: talwell</div><div class="ubbcode-body">For those of us that cannot visit in person, fear not as Google has us covered.
