BB CAMARO SPRINGS

HOW CAN I TELL THE DIFF BETWEEN BB AND SMALL BLOCK FRONT SPRINGS? BY HEIGHT? COIL SIZE? I HAVE A NEW SET OF SPRINGS
WITH NO NUMBERS THAT ARE SUPPOSE TO BE FOR A BB. THANKS

Re: BB CAMARO SPRINGS

That's a good question and it would be nice to see a chart with the springs' general height while with the spring removed and sitting on the ground and also a measurement the wire diameter with a set dial calipers. I couldn't believe how the ride height of my old Camaro changed when swapping from a ZZ4 Small Block to an iron-headed BBC. I expected it drop somewhat but was still surprised at how drastic it was! Does such a chart exist?

NOT THAT I KNOW OF,I DIDNT TAKE OUT THE OLD SPRINGS YET BUT THATS NOT FAR OFF. I HAVE A 68 CAMARO L78 WITH 20K ORIGINAL MILES 2 OWNER THAT IM ABOUT TO DISASSEMBLE. I HAVE WHAT IS SUPPOSE TO BE A NEW SET OFBB SPRING FROM ANOTHER PROJECT THAT I WOULD LIKE TO USE IF I CAN VERIFY

I've been able to ID springs before using David Pozzi's chart. Also check to see if there is a number stamped on it, usually somewhere on the end coil.

I agree. Keep the originals if you have them. I have never found a set of repro springs that let the car sit properly.

Your probably right, there is nothing wrong with the springs I just thought I would replace them during the resto

Re: BB CAMARO SPRINGS

According to John R Hoopers book "69 Camaro Reference guide" Chevrolet had 22 different front springs for the Camaro. The book has three pages devoted to springs (pages 344-346) They called it computer selected springs, it was selected from a table of different weights on the front.

The table shows 7 different springs for bigblock coupés and 6 for 'verts. Z/28s has 7 different springs one of them can be found on bigblocks (YH)

Today Moog has only one spring (or maybe two) for the Camaro so the chance that one of them would fit correctly is pretty slim.

Don't restore/replace anything that don't need to be. It will just be another kit car IMO. 20,000 mile car sounds real nice to me unless it is wrecked or something.

Re: BB CAMARO SPRINGS

NO never wrecked or rusted, just going to do frame off resto I thought when
I change all bushings I would do springs also. Only original parts missing from car are carb and dist

Re: BB CAMARO SPRINGS

I agree with Sammy, reuse the original springs for a low mile car, and you won't have to worry about the correct height.

Re: BB CAMARO SPRINGS

If you get the original print for the front spring, it should have those dimensions. Good luck getting that....

Here's a bunch of spring data, including load and rate info for 68's. Combine it with that aftermarket chart and you might get close.
