Dug out Beater time to work...
Dug beater out after a 365 rest and went over it tonight to try and remeber where I left off, Seems as the kids get older it gets harder to find the time for my personal needs... Actually looks good I had bolted the car back togeather at last point to make sure it all fits, Only a few minor things to go over it seems and take it back apart for paint..

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
well the old car found it right back in the corner.. for another year and a half, I took the cover off and decided I better get off my rear and put it togeather so a $2000.00 parts order later and digging the thing out im back on track, the old 6 banger is going to be driving this summer. I have the engine ready to drop in and welded up the shifter hole, I took it to my work shop and lifted it to detail the bottom when im finished with that the engine is going in. Figured I would get the engine and trans in then paint it body work is finished ready for final block.

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
I got some more time in the last couple weeks the bottom is as clean as im going to get it for a driver, I replaced the brake lines and painted the bottom I sprayed undercoat in areas it was before, and installed the engine, I have been doing alot of cleaning and wiping down amazing how dirty things got just sitting..
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ass/005-27.jpg Dirty from sitting, and me spraying down the floors in my toy box.. made a mess of things http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ass/004-38.jpg http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ass/001-32.jpg http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ass/008-21.jpg |

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
Very nice car, it is coming together now.

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
Thanks all it feels good to be back on it. I normally would have painted it and then put the drivetrain in, but seeing how I keep sticking it in the corner I figured a fire up and listen would keep my blood pumping to stay on it...
It has a mechanical tach and I would like to find a after market vintage tach drive distributor for it other than the gm unit that I have now, also I think the Packard wires will go they are like new dated 73 (when I think the last time the car was powered) so when I get the ignition figured out Ill get it fired and post a vid. The Tach that was in the car http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d.../beater053.jpg On another note I did something I wish I had not... the car is obviously (for those who remember any past posts on it) not a SS or anything of the sort, so the car originally had base emblems and at one time the Camaro emblem holes were even filled and painted over, so I got the bright idea last time I was working on it since it was nothing I might as well make it a little flashy so I ordered a stencil kit emblems and drilled SS holes in the panels and was planing to buy some Nickey emblems for the front fenders from Stefano, now a year and a half later I wish I would have never drilled the car and left it as once was.... so I have mixed feeling as what to do on that now, I probably will just finish it that way I really do not feel like welding all those holes up now... |
Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
Mallory YC-465-HP is a tach drive dizzy for SB and BBCs. I see them from time to time on ebay (as recently as 1 month ago).

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
Sam,
Im still gathering parts to rebuild the 074 headed engine that was in the car, I will have to keep my eye out for something like that for it, are those GM wires? I have a set of NOS Delco orange solid core universal wires but are small blocks (90* Boot) so not much good for me. |
Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
Acutally they are BB Delco wires (dated '71). I am using them on my SB. Might be interested in a trade.....
|
Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
I will get them dug out this weekend and snap a pic, now if I just didnt put them in a place that I will never lose them...

Sam
Im not sure what it is but on my home computer I have to log in about 5 times before it lets me post.. but another try here are the wires in question... http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ass/001-33.jpg http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ass/002-44.jpg http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ass/003-38.jpg |

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
Sam, they might be a bit more day 4.. date is 84 but im thinking they are the end of the Delco Packard performance wires, good chance im wrong I usually am... The wires are marked Delco Packard still and some mumbo jumbo solid core something..

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
Back to the bottom of things... and the rear springs im at a bit of??? well as with the rest of the car just seems fitting, so back to the begining I thought the rear springs were odd and someone had added a extra leaf on one side by first glance, well here they are verry clean I took them out gave them a quick hit with the psi washer and it looks like the 3rd spring is forward??? has anyone seen this? not a extra spring but just in a diferent position on the number 3 leaf?? odd... The spring with the odd place leaf was on the passenger side the normal placement leaf was on drivers side and seems to have alot more duty time as can be seen how the mill finish is worn on that leaf. they are clean but just odd to me?? any ideas?

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
When you look at the other end of the spring can you see if the whole spring has moved,or has it moved because it has a break in it?

No the spring is not broke (they are actually in verry nice shape) But the whole number 3 leaf is forward, not sure if it is a mess up at the plant or if someone did it I plan on taking the center bolt out to see if it has been re drilled, im real curious if anyone has seen this before? |

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ass/001-34.jpg From the rear side and forward side you can see the whole leaf forward? |
Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
That's odd
What are your plans for the car? Drive, beat and enjoy? If so, I highly suggest getting a pair of Global West leaf springs. I cannot truly express how well they handle. My Z handle like a dream. Dan |
Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
The car is nothing rare but someone did build it as a drag car, I would like to leave a few of the fingerprints on it so they will stay tonight I will pull the center bolt and have a peak to see if it has been redrilled, I do not want to bend the clamps but I think with the bolt out I will be able to spread them enough to tell.

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
I took the upper leaf off looks like another odd part on beater, spring was off set from factory? intended or mistake? the spring has not been redrilled.

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
maybe a custom set to prevent wrap up, did it come off the pass side?

I think you're on to something! |
Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
Maybe the leaf was replaced,no hole...Looks like some home made super stock work.

Yes the spring that is odd was on the pass side, originally I was thinking I needed to find a new set of springs but im just going to clean these up replace the front bushing and put them back. |
Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
You will find all old race parts or stuff that is fun. I can't wait to see more stuff and talk about it,that's the real fun.

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
So what it appears you have are some spring in the passenger side pack flipped around, right?
One of these days I need to get 4 of those GoPro Cameras and take the clamps off the leaf spring and video it. I think people often can't wrap their heads around more than one action occurring in the rear suspension. Not calling you out Jeff as being one of them, just saying there is more going on than what old slapper bars address. Those spring mods are a step in the right direction. |

Re: Dug out Beater time to work...
Some times more than one reason or explanation for a modification. Don't think too hard on that, the answer will show up later and make sense.
