A BE axle means nothing. I have had several and decent fakes have been made out of BL axles.

There are no known COPOs near that VIN. The first grouping of Yenkos were N578xxx-N579xxx. The next batch [a few Yenkos, Bergers, Emmert] were N608xxx-N610xxx.

There are several very well-done COPO clones out there. A real one needs bullet-proof paperwork to be accepted as such.

Thanks for the help, the car is a total basket case and the rear end is gone.

The presence of a BE axle is hardly a foolproof indication of a COPO. Neither is a curved-neck radiator.

I would think that a BE axle that is untouched and looks to be original in a project car or survivor to be a good tell tale sign.

I looked at a BE under those circumstances some time ago; an untouched axle in a project car. It was in a '67 Camaro and had been there for decades.

Both of the loose BE axles I had ended up in COPOs because neither had the original. One is in a Yenko; the other is in ZL-1 #40. I sold it to Lewis Swan when he owned the car in the '80s. I took the axle out of an Olympic Gold Yenko in a junkyard in 1981.

Many COPOs have been destroyed; some existing COPOs do not have their OE rear axle. The axles are out there somewhere.

Yeah, BE codes and curved-necked radiators don't mean anything special at all and should not influence a person's purchase decisions!

Every COPO clone has them.

Re: possble copo??

Please do not mis-understand my point. There are some very well-done COPO clones around. ZL-1 clones are easy to spot [duh...] L-72s are not. Start with a Norwood X11 SS in a certain VIN range, locate a ratty BB car. A Nova will do. If you know what you are doing no one will be able to tell.

Non-Yenko COPOs need an indisputable VIN-stamped MN or MO engine and/or bullet-proof paperwork.

Re: possble copo??

A friend has one with the original M22 and BE rear axle and the VIN and NOR body number fall right in line with other known legit COPOs. No original paperwork and no original engine but he feels very good about what he has. Some might walk away from a car like this but there are a whole bunch who would not.
