Calling all Electrical Geeks!
I need test prodedures for a 36 mfd condenser on my Mallory distributor . My multimeter is digital btw.
Thanks! |
Re: Calling all Electrical Geeks!
You needs a Capacitor Tester Sam. See if there is a electronics shop around, even a TV repair guy might be able to help.

Re: Calling all Electrical Geeks!
Figured you'd be in the know there shipmate. Any concerns about them frying it or should I be a trusting sole?

Re: Calling all Electrical Geeks!
No Sam, it's not a big deal...

Re: Calling all Electrical Geeks!
Or find someone with a Sun distributor tester. They have a condenser test section.

Re: Calling all Electrical Geeks!
eww, that's good to know! Thanks Steve. Been doing a lot of reading on doing true, no-sh*t testing on condensers with results that are meaningful. There is ALOT of mis-information out there . That little condenser is VERY important.

Sam, I just found out how important the condenser is on my 69 Malibu, 350/300 hp. It lost the connection between the wire and spade at the points. Car still ran, but barely. I put the pertronix ignition in that distributor and I can say the car has never run better. Good luck with your endeavor. Phil Woj |

Re: Calling all Electrical Geeks!
I took Mikey's recommendation and found an old T.V. repair shop out here in old-town Gilbert (thanks Eddie M.) and the shop owner didn't miss a beat - he took my condenser and hooked it up to his condenser tester doo-hickey and ran his test. It charges the condenser and sees that it measures to the appropriate micro fahrrads (sp?) per the case of my condenser, and that it holds its charge. Happy to say that it checked good. I now have all the piece-parts to complete my Mallory ignition system resto. Will update you soon on that.
BTW, I did check out a few fellas with Sun (or similar) testers and I found that it was a specific option for condenser testing and none of the 3 units I saw had such a tester. Hey Shaun - altho Denis did not have the ability to test my condenser, I got to meet another cool motor head with a very nice complete shop! This is Shaun Price's engine-man that Shaun swears by. Thanks for all of the input. |
Re: Calling all Electrical Geeks!
Microfarads and 1.21 gigawatts. Sounds like highschool science all over again. This is good information. Thanks for sharing.
