Numbers Guys!! Is This a REAL 67 Z28 302 ngine
I was looking over the T-bucket roadster I bought yesterday trying to figure out what engine it had in it (I know it was a SBC, duh!) Decoding it I came up with these numbers
Block casting 3892657 Pad Stamp V0321MP 7L158053 Date C107 Heads Casting numbers 3890462 Dates (both) B207 From what I can tell, the engine decodes to a 1967 302 with A.I.R. Am I getting this right? Is this a REAL 1967 Z-28 302 engine? It's in my roadster now running an Edelbrock 4bbl intake. What is this engine worth??? http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Picture230.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Picture211.jpg |
Re: Numbers Guys!! Is This a REAL 67 Z28 302 ngine
Your casting date of C107 means it was cast on March 10, 1967. The MP engine suffix for 1967 means it is this:
MP 1967 283 4 A.I.R. MP 1967 302 290 4 Z-28, w/A.I.R. So it could either be a 283 or the Z-28 290hp 302. |
Re: Numbers Guys!! Is This a REAL 67 Z28 302 ngine
The block casting number will verify 283 or 302.
I don't think the 283 got the 462 heads and the posted VIN would lead me to belive the engine is from a 67 Camaro. I don't think that they actually installed 283s in Camaro, so I would be leaning towards a 302. I could be wrong but don't have my book to check. Someone will correct me if I am mistaken. |
Re: Numbers Guys!! Is This a REAL 67 Z28 302 ngine
MP code is for a 302/290 4-speed A.I.R. only. The 283 Camaro used the MD/MJ coded block.

Cool T-bucket...I love those rear wheels!.
The stamping looks good and that Los Vin corresponds to a May built car.. Is '67 Z28 Vin 124377L158053 out there somewhere?. Welcome aboard James!. ~ Pete |
Re: Numbers Guys!! Is This a REAL 67 Z28 302 ngine
I just learned from the a similar thread over at the Team Camaro website that the engine is a real one of only 602 Z28 engines made for 1967 and one of only a handful of "MP" A.I.R. California Emissions (smog pump) engines bult.
http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=178858 They also determined that the original 1967 Z28 that came with this engine has in fact survived and is an original Los Angeles built, original paint red RS Z28 that is missing its engine. The car was built in early May of 1967 and this engine was cast on March 10, 1967 and built on March 21, 1967 so all of the dates line up as well. They are trying to contact the owner of the car now to see if he has any interest in the original numbers matching 302 engine from his car. |

That would be pretty cool - an original paint red 67 RS-Z28 finding it's born with engine. Gotta love the internet.

UPDATE: I spoke with the owner of the 67 Z28 and he and I have worked out a deal that's fair to both of us and the engine is going to be pulled and shipped back to the owner to be reinstalled back in the car it belongs in!!

Re: Numbers Guys!! Is This a REAL 67 Z28 302 ngine
COOL news!.
How far apart had they strayed from each other and is there any story known of why they got separated in the first place?. ~ Pete |
Re: Numbers Guys!! Is This a REAL 67 Z28 302 ngine
The car had the engine removed in Orange County around 1977 and then got shipped to an indan reservation where it sat for 30 years. The owner gave the car to his son who sold it to a friend of his and it was moved to Michigan. The current owner bought it last year and brought it back to California where it is curently undergoing restoration. It is also a rare Cowl Plenum Rally sport car.
The T-bucket hit the car show circuit in 1977 and bounced around the country winding up in Tampa Florida where it is today. |

Great story. I love to see the enjine reunited with the car
I wonder why the enjine was taken out of the car and sold in the first place??? PJ |
